Building on the foundation laid by Frank Baker, Albert Outler, and other pioneers of the discipline, this handbook provides an overview of the best current scholarship in the field. Book Manual of Southern Methodism Including Church History Doctrine Polity and Missions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Southern Methodism Including Church History Doctrine Polity and Missions Classic Reprint written by H. M. Hamill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Southern Methodism, Including Church History, Doctrine, Polity, and Missions To write a brief treatise that shall cover the entire range of Christian doctrine, and yet be neither a bare and dry skeleton, on the one hand, nor a dull, superficial statement of mere commonplaces, on the other, is the difficult task that has been assigned to the author in this little volume. In trying thus to combine brevity, clearness, and completeness the author has kept constantly in mind the class of readers for whom the volume is intended - viz., Sunday school teachers, candidates for the ministry, and Bible students generally, who desire to know what are the cardinal doctrines of the Bible as it is interpreted by the great body of evangelical Christian believers. That the doctrines of the Bible, rightly interpreted, and the doctrines of Methodism, rightly stated, are one and the same, this writer steadfastly believes, and in that faith this treatise has been written, and is now sent forth in the humble hope that it may give to those who read it a greater faith in their faith, and thus enable them the better to give to others a reason for the hope and the faith that is in them. Book Methodism and the Southern Mind 1770 1810

Download or read book Methodism and the Southern Mind 1770 1810 written by Cynthia Lynn Lyerly and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the role of Methodism in the Revolutionary and early national South. When the Methodists first arrived in the South, Lyerly argues, they were critics of the social order. By advocating values traditionally deemed "feminine," treating white women and African Americans with considerable equality, and preaching against wealth and slavery, Methodism challenged Southern secular mores. For this reason, Methodism evoked sustained opposition, especially from elite white men. Lyerly analyzes the public denunciations, domestic assaults on Methodist women and children, and mob violence against black Methodists. These attacks, Lyerly argues, served to bind Methodists more closely to one another; they were sustained by the belief that suffering was salutary and that persecution was a mark of true faith.
