Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanakam & Schuller are tricksters. As artists and researchers, they remodel the rules of fine art, creating idiosyncratic orders and new world designs incorporated in videos and objects. The artefacts of the two artists from Vienna are "Gestalt-changers"; they change their outer shape and re-appear in a number of different contexts. The trickster art book illustrates the oeuvre and provides an insight into its making using multi-page photo spreads from video stills, and production photographs. The Arkadikon essay captures readers and leads them to contemporary hypothetical landscapes, deconstructing them as modern surrogates of an increasingly virtual world. The artists discuss ideal, pop, aura and abduction with Angela Stief, Anselm Franke, Uta Grosenick, Annette Hünnekens, Wolfgang Ullrich, Lois Weinberger, Stephanie Weber und Oliver Zybok.

Book The Artist as Curator

    Book Details:
  • Author : Celina Jeffery
  • Publisher : Intellect (UK)
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 9781783203376
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Artist as Curator written by Celina Jeffery and published by Intellect (UK). This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the museum and gallery have increasingly become self-reflexive spaces, in which the relationship between art, its display, its creators, and its audience is subverted and democratized. One effect of this has been a growing place for artists as curators, and in The Artist as Curator Celina Jeffery brings together a group of scholars and artists to explore the many ways that artists have introduced new curatorial ways of thinking and talking about artistic culture. Taking a deliberately multidisciplinary and cross-cultural focus, The Artist as Curator will fill a gap in museum and curatorial studies, offering a thorough and diverse treatment of various approaches to the historical and changing role of the artist as curator that should appeal to scholars, curators, and artists alike.

Download or read book Hidden Alliances written by Elisabeth Schimana and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where are all of the women in the avant-garde electronic music scene? Anyone who thinks they do not exist is totally wrong. It is, however, a fact that hardly anyone has done any research on them or written about them. Wondering about a world allegedly lacking in female electronic musicians, Elisabeth Schimana began a search in the late 1990s and the initial results of her research went into her performance Portrait 01 - Die Futuristin (Portrait 01 - the female futurists). Her research brought her into the sphere of electronic music, which culminated in the founding of the IMA- Institute for Media Archaeology. Now, this publication presents twenty female artists and their work. The artists create a somewhat different picture of the creation and development of electronic music. This illustrated volume is as intriguing as it is fascinating, and, above all, a significant portrait of this new history.

Book Paper Machines

Download or read book Paper Machines written by Markus Krajewski and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the card catalog—a “paper machine” with rearrangeable elements—can be regarded as a precursor of the computer. Today on almost every desk in every office sits a computer. Eighty years ago, desktops were equipped with a nonelectronic data processing machine: a card file. In Paper Machines, Markus Krajewski traces the evolution of this proto-computer of rearrangeable parts (file cards) that became ubiquitous in offices between the world wars. The story begins with Konrad Gessner, a sixteenth-century Swiss polymath who described a new method of processing data: to cut up a sheet of handwritten notes into slips of paper, with one fact or topic per slip, and arrange as desired. In the late eighteenth century, the card catalog became the librarian's answer to the threat of information overload. Then, at the turn of the twentieth century, business adopted the technology of the card catalog as a bookkeeping tool. Krajewski explores this conceptual development and casts the card file as a “universal paper machine” that accomplishes the basic operations of Turing's universal discrete machine: storing, processing, and transferring data. In telling his story, Krajewski takes the reader on a number of illuminating detours, telling us, for example, that the card catalog and the numbered street address emerged at the same time in the same city (Vienna), and that Harvard University's home-grown cataloging system grew out of a librarian's laziness; and that Melvil Dewey (originator of the Dewey Decimal System) helped bring about the technology transfer of card files to business.

Book The Philosophy of Susanne Langer

Download or read book The Philosophy of Susanne Langer written by Adrienne Dengerink Chaplin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of one of the most insightful and fertile but also most neglected philosophers of the twentieth century, Susanne Langer. Failure to recognise Langer's seminal philosophical sources has led to frequent misinterpretations and misunderstandings of her unique philosophical thought. Beginning with an overview of Langer's life and education, this study provides a much-needed explanation of how Langer's thinking was shaped by four seminal sources: her mentors Henry Sheffer and Alfred North Whitehead and the European philosophers Ernst Cassirer and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Langer's ability to unite seemingly disparate fields such logic, art, and embodied cognition around the notion of symbolic form, places aesthetics not at the margins of philosophy but at its very centre. By locating Langer's work in the broader context of major developments in twentieth-century European and American philosophy, Dengerink Chaplin shows how she was often ahead of her time. Shedding new light on Langer as an American philosopher whose innovative thought crosses the customary boundaries between analytic and continental philosophy, this book confirms why she continues to have relevance today.

Book Last Loosening

  • Author : Walter Serner

  • Release : 2020-07-15
  • ISBN : 9788086264455
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Last Loosening written by Walter Serner and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cofounder of Dada and its enfant terrible, Walter Serner was a brilliant observer of society - his activities in the 1920s have been called "a dance on the rim of a volcano." His Last Loosening: A Dada Manifesto was written in 1918 and published in 1920. Slightly revised later as Serner became disgusted with Dada, it forms the first part of this volume, its philosophical foundation. A playful "moral codex" to subvert the illusions and stereotypes underpinning society's views on morality and decency, it attacks the contradictions between appearance and reality: "The world wants to be deceived, and is enraged when you do not oblige." Serner's publisher, Paul Steegemann, in a fit of promotional zeal, sensationally claimed that it had been "compiled across the entire continent by the notorious international con man Dr. Walter Serner."The volume's second part, "The Handbook of Practices," was written in Geneva in 1927 and offers a practical guide in gnomic prose for the modern amoralist, the con man. A cynical vision to be sure, Serner has set out a list of precepts to arm us in a world where boredom prevails and nothing but self-interest is a motivator, a shameless, bigoted world wallowing in an orgy of narcissism, where it is either fool or be fooled. His smugness and indifference, his "Jesuit snobbery" as one critic called it, gave his work an explosive force that was unsurpassed by his contemporaries.
