Book Evaluation Methodologies for Transport Investment

Download or read book Evaluation Methodologies for Transport Investment written by Michael Roe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this title reviews and evaluates the methodologies suitable for highway evaluation, along with the UK transport supplementary grant and TPP (Transport Policies and Programme) system. Examples of current UK practice are briefly described, with more details being given of the technique of priority ranking used in the case study area of the West Midlands. Multi criteria approaches are reviewed in chapter two. Chapter three looks at the choice of highway data input in the light of those available, and the practical structure of factorial analysis applied to the case study area. The book covers following issues: computer structure and requirements; highway problem data; referencing methods; site definition; and weighting methods. The results from this study are described and then analysed by classical factorial analysis. The implications of the technique for the TPP preparation process, for the derivation of priorities, and the highway evaluation process as a whole are given. Specific techniques, such as factorial analysis, bridge problem and bus aid ranking, highway capacity calculations and sensitivity testing, as well as the computer programs used (March and COBA) are described in greater detail in the appendices.

Book Heavy Traffic

Download or read book Heavy Traffic written by Daniel Madar and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada and the United States exchange the world's highest level of bilateral trade, valued at $1.4 billion a day. Two-thirds of this trade travels on trucks. Heavy Traffic examines the way in which the regulatory reform of American and Canadian trucking, coupled with free trade, has internationalized this vital industry. Before deregulation, restrictive entry rules had fostered two separate national highway transportation markets, and most international traffic had to be exchanged at the border. When the United States deregulated first, the imbalance between its opened market and Canada's still-restricted one produced a surprisingly difficult bilateral dispute. American deregulation was motivated by domestic incentives, but the subsequent Canadian deregulation blended domestic incentives with transborder rate comparisons and concerns about trade competitiveness. Daniel Madar shows that deregulation created a de facto regime of free trade in trucking services. Removing regulatory barriers has enabled Canadian and American carriers to follow the expansion of transborder traffic that began with the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement and continues with NAFTA. The services available with deregulated trucking have also supported sweeping changes in industrial logistics. As transborder traffic has surged, the two countries' carriers -- from billion-dollar corporations to family firms -- have exploited the latitude provided by deregulation. This book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the policy processes and economic conditions that led to trucking deregulation. As a study in public policy formation and the international effects of reform, it will be of interest to students and scholars of political economy, international relations, and transportation.

Book Hidden History of Lake Winnipesaukee

Download or read book Hidden History of Lake Winnipesaukee written by Glenn A. Knoblock and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time of the earliest Native Americans, Lake Winnipesaukee has experienced a rich yet often forgotten history. Known by many as "America's Oldest Summer Resort," the area's first summer home was built in Wolfeboro by a royal governor. The Massachusetts border once extended all the way to Laconia, while Center Harbor served as the site of the country's first college sports rivalry. Governors Island may now be the summer playground of the elite, but it was once at the center of a religious movement that called for the end of the world. From the country's most unusual airport in Alton to the tragic story of the Laconia State School, the lake has been the setting for many notable events. Join local historian and author Glenn Knoblock as he reveals the overlooked history of this unique region.
