Book Charts for Determining Propeller Efficiency

Download or read book Charts for Determining Propeller Efficiency written by John L. Crigler and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: A short method of estimating propeller efficiency for a given operating condition is described. The efficiency is determined for any design condition by evaluating separately from charts the induced losses and the profile-drag losses. The estimated efficiency is compared with experimental results for a wide range of operating conditions and found to be in agreement near peak efficiency. The present analysis covers single-rotating propellers of two, three, four, six, and eight blades and includes charts showing the rotational-energy loss for the given operating condition in order to assist in estimating the gain in efficiency for dual-rotating propellers. The change in efficiency to be expected from body interference is discussed. Two examples illustrating the use of the method are given in an appendix.

Book Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design

Download or read book Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design written by E. Torenbeek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the education of aeronautical engineers at Delft University of Technology started in 1940 under tae inspiring leadership of Professor H.J. van der Maas, much emphasis has been placed on the design of aircraft as part of the student's curriculum. Not only is aircraft design an optional subject for thesis work, but every aeronautical student has to carry out a preliminary airplane design in the course of his study. The main purpose of this preliminary design work is to enable the student to synthesize the knowledge ob tained separately in courses on aerodynamics, aircraft performances, stability and con trol, aircraft structures, etc. The student's exercises in preliminary design have been directed through the years by a number of staff members of the Department of Aerospace Engineering in Delft. The author of this book, Mr. E. Torenbeek, has made a large contribution to this part of the study programme for many years. Not only has he acquired vast experience in teaching airplane design at university level, but he has also been deeply involved in design-oriented re search, e.g. developing rational design methods and systematizing design information. I am very pleased that this wealth of experience, methods and data is now presented in this book.

Book SHROUDED PROPELLER TEST PROGRAM COMPUTER PROGRAM

Download or read book SHROUDED PROPELLER TEST PROGRAM COMPUTER PROGRAM written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamilton Standard computer deck numbered H193 is used to calculate shrouded propeller performance and shroud surface pressure coefficients based on the computational procedure discussed in Volume 1 of 'Shrouded Propeller Test Program - Method Development.' The necessary shroud thickness and camber effects are generated by Hamilton Standard Deck H194, and the pertinent centerbody information is obtained from Hamilton Standard Deck H060. Therefore, data generated by Decks H194 and H060 are used as input for Deck H193. The computations permissible with Hamilton Standard Deck H193 are divided into the following three categories. (1) Given Shroud and Propeller Geometry--For a given shroud and propeller geometry, an iterative process is involved in establishing the propeller circulation for the specific operating condition. Then, the net shrouded propeller (shroud + propeller) performance is computed as well as the shroud and propeller contributions to the performance. Shroud friction drag and shroud surface pressure distributions are also calculated. (2) Given Shroud Geometry and Propeller Circulation--For a given shroud geometry and propeller circulation, the same output as noted above is obtained. (3) Given Shroud Geometry (No Propeller)--For a given shroud geometry, the shroud surface pressure coefficients, the shroud drag, and velocity induced by the shroud in any plane in the shroud are computed.

Book Formulas for Propellers in Yaw and Charts of the Side force Derivative

Download or read book Formulas for Propellers in Yaw and Charts of the Side force Derivative written by Herbert S. Ribner and published by . This book was released on 1943 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: General formulas are given for propellers for the rate of change of side-force coefficient with angle of yaw and for the rate of change of pitching-moment coefficient with angle of yaw. Charts of the side-force derivative are given for two propellers of different plan form. The charts cover solidities of two to six blades and single and dual rotation. The blade angles range from 15° or 20° to 60°. The equations, and the charts computed from the equations, are based on an unpublished analysis, which incorporates factors not adequately covered in previously published work and gives good agreement with experiment over a wide range of operating conditions. A study of the equations indicates that they are consistent with the following physical interpretation: In developing side force, the propeller acts like a fin of which the area is the projected side area of the propeller, the effective aspect ratio is of the order of 8, and the effective dynamic pressure is roughly that at the propeller disk as augmented by the inflow. The variation of the inflow velocity, for a fixed-pitch propeller, accounts for most of the variation of side force with advance-diameter ratio. The charts may be applied to obtain the rate of change of normal-force coefficient with angle of attack of the axis of rotation if proper account is taken of the upwash or downwash from the wing.
