Book The Washingtons Volume 9

Download or read book The Washingtons Volume 9 written by Justin Glenn and published by Savas Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ninth volume of a comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential Line” of the Washingtons. Volume one began with the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It contained the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Subsequent volumes two through eight continued this family history for an additional eight generations, highlighting most notable members (volume two) and tracing lines of descent from the royalty and nobility of England and continental Europe (volume three). Volume nine collects over 8,500 descendants of the recently discovered line of William Wright (died in Franklin Co., Va., ca. 1809). It also provides briefer accounts of five other early Wright families of Virginia that have often been mentioned by researchers as close kinsmen of George Washington, including: William Wright (died in Fauquier Co., Va., ca. 1805), Frances Wright and her husband Nimrod Ashby, and William Wright (died in Greensville Co., Va., by 1827). A cumulative index will complete the series as volume ten.

Book Death before Sentencing

Download or read book Death before Sentencing written by Andrew R. Klein and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have jails become the deadliest waiting rooms in America? Death before Sentencing provides a sweeping exposé of thousands of avoidable deaths that have occurred in the U.S. county and local jail systems within the past few decades. These deaths have been overlooked, under-investigated, and even covered-up as jail systems avoid responsibility and refuse to take action. This is the most complete investigation of the deadly side of jails, describing the daily deaths of detainees, including those from suicides, untreated drug and alcohol withdrawal, forced restraint and brutality, and general medical malpractice provided by for-profit correctional medical providers. The lack of attention and responsibility paid by state and local officials, law enforcement, and medical examiners has facilitated these ongoing and increasing avoidable deaths. Looking forward to reforms being initiated by the U.S. Justice Department Civil Rights Division and within state legislatures and celebrating successful lawsuits, Andrew R. Klein lays out institutional reforms required to curtail the epidemic of the daily deaths in America’s jails.

Our subject and his wife occupy a prominent position in the social and intellectual life of their community and their pleasant home is noted for its hospitality not only among their friends in Webster City but among guests from other towns and cities in the state. HARTYTG M. SPARBOE. Webster City has conferred upon Hartvig M. Sparboe the highest honor within her gift, having called him to the office of mayor for the second term. He has been actively and helpfully interested in municipal affairs for a number of years and looks at vital questions relative to the city's upbuilding and the management of its business interests in a practical yet progressive way. His own life history serves as a source of inspiration and encouragement to others, for Mr. Sparboe is a self-educated and self-made man whose advancement is due to the wise use he has made of his time and opportunities and not to any fortunate combination of circumstances. He was born in Norway. March 5, 1867, and was only three years of age at the time of the death of his father, Anthony Sparboe, who passed away in 1870, three days before the birth of his youngest son, leaving the widowed mother, who in her maidenhood bore the name of Bergitte Karoluson, with four sons. In 1873, with her little family, the eldest being then ten years of age and the youngest a little more than two years, she came to the United States and was also accompanied by her mother. After landing on the eastern coast they made their way direct to Hamilton county, Iowa, and settled in Scott township, where Mrs. Sparboe still makes her home...
