But after his mother passed and his father, Terry “Big Cali” Sands decided that it was time for him to finally step down, Cameron could only think of one person he wanted by his side and that was his little brother, Canan. Canan “School Boy” Sands grew up around his father’s empire but elected to keep his hands clean and stay out of the family business. However, now that his father was stepping down, both Cam and Big Cali had been urging Canan to step up and take his father’s place. Even though Canan had been around the business all his life, he never really saw himself being a part of it, but now that he just graduated from college and couldn’t figure out what was next, he finally gave in and stepped up to be by his brother’s side and run BCE. Family over everything, so when Cam said he needed his brother by his side, Canan knew what he had to do. Canan had been with his girl, Chelsey for two years, and even though everyone in his life knew that Chelsey was no good, Canan wasn’t trying to hear it, until he finally saw her true colors. Canan finally lets Chelsey go and falls for Avery, whose life is just as complicated. Being the daughter of an addict and having a father that died during a drug deal when she was a baby, has Avery hesitant about Canan’s decision to run BCE with Cam. Will Canan be able to convince Avery to give him a chance or will his decision to run BCE cause him to miss out on love. Meanwhile, Cameron has decided that he needed to find someone to settle down with. He was tired of one-night stands and wanted someone in his life to be there for him and help him raise his four-year-old son, CJ since CJ’s mother, Justine was more concerned with whom she could get in her bed versus taking care of her son. Cameron meets Lauren but is not interested in her, until he sees her at the mall one day with her boyfriend and jealousy kicks in, making him realize that he wanted more from Lauren than just friendship. Being on top is not as easy as it seems because Canan and Cam have to constantly watch their backs, especially when it comes to people wanting to see them fail. Cam and Canan have no idea what they’re about to face, but together the Sands brothers are ready for anything.

Book Everyday Life and Consumer Culture in Eighteenth Century Damascus

Download or read book Everyday Life and Consumer Culture in Eighteenth Century Damascus written by James P. Grehan and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damascus was for centuries a center of learning and commerce. Drawing on the city's dazzling literary tradition-a rich collection of poetry, chronicles, travel accounts, and biographical dictionaries-as well as on Islamic court records, James Grehan explores the material culture of premodern Damascus, reconstructing the economic infrastructure, social customs, and private consumer habits that dominated this cosmopolitan hub in the 1700s. He sketches a lively history of diet, furniture, fashion, and other aspects of daily life, providing an unusual and intimate account of the choices, constraints, and compromises that defined consumer behavior. Coffee, tobacco, and light firearms had arisen as new luxury items in preceding centuries, and Grehan traces the usage of such goods in order to get a picture of the overall standard of living in the premodern Middle East. He looks particularly at how wealth and poverty were defined and how consumption patterns expressed notions of taste, class, and power, illuminating the prominent role played by Damascus in shaping the economy and culture of the Middle East. In assessing the magnitude of social change in modern times, we have few benchmarks from the period preceding the onset of modernity in the nineteenth century. This informative study will make possible more precise cultural and economic comparisons between different parts of the world as it stood on the brink of a radically new economic and political order. The book's focus on a little-examined period and region will appeal to scholars and students of urban social history and Arab popular culture.

Book excerpt: The Masters brothers Yetti, Hayes, and Keys are the epitome of sibling love and loyalty. Their circle is tight, and no one comes before family. Keys being the oldest holds the family together since all they have are each other. However, each brother often takes the leading role when it comes to business and life decisions. Together, they run an empire that has allotted them money, respect and power, which of course fuels tensions and has enemies lurking in the shadows. Either way, they stand tall and they stand together. After surviving a traumatic childhood, all three brothers are left a little unstable, with hearts of stone. It drives them to succeed in the streets, but creates a void where matters of the heart are concerned. Yetti especially was dealing with some serious demons, one of which was forced by his mother choosing his life over hers. His past has made him unwilling to open up, and his motto in life has basically been hit and run as far as women were concerned. Their only benefit to him was to satisfy his needs. No connection, no emotional commitments. Reelle was exactly what Yetti needed, although neither of them realize it at the time. She is the ying to his yang, so to speak, and the peace in the middle of a storm. After being burned by the one person she put her all into, Reelle, much like Yetti, had no plans to give her heart away, but unfortunately the universe had other plans. Keys is set in his ways and enjoying life by his own terms. His status has placed him in the position to have just about any woman he sets his sights on until he runs across Asha. Their first encounter was one for the records. She took control and forced him to play by her rules This only fueled Keys’ curiosity and had him chasing her for more. Asha has no intention of being any man’s fool, not even the infamous Keys Masters. As much as she’s drawn to him, she fully intends to make him earn a role in her life, but little does she know, that attitude is what wins him over. Hayes is the baby of the family and seems to have it all together, with a long term girlfriend and beautiful baby girl, you’d think life should be perfect, however new struggles seem to be finding the two of them daily. These brothers and the women they’ve crossed paths with have a few life lessons to learn. It could either make them or break them especially when you add jealousy, and envy from outsiders. The streets aren’t kind when it comes to matters of the heart and defending your empire. Hopefully they will all find their way out with their hearts intact.

Book excerpt: A solarpunk masterpiece from a writer who champions a positive, inclusive and deep-thinking version of future possibilities. The Pulldogs leave Rome to embrace a new condition: leaving no trace of their passage, they shape a new challenging lifestyle: wandering around the world as neo-nomads to spread their solarpunk way of living and to engage on a never-ending mission to save endangered human cultures with nanites. But the vision of Alan and Nicolas about how the Pulldogs should live collide, and as a consequence, they split in two groups: one goes North to live in the beautiful wilderness of Siberia and Mongolia, while the other goes South to save the Dogon tribe from a possible extinction due to climate change in Central Africa. But at the end everybody - including a new generation of Pulldogs - will have to come back to Rome, where their incredible transformation started many years before.
