Download or read book Forbidden Animation written by Karl F. Cohen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-05-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tweety Bird was colored yellow because censors felt the original pink made the bird look nude. Betty Boop's dress was lengthened so that her garter didn't show. And in recent years, a segment of Mighty Mouse was dropped after protest groups claimed the mouse was actually sniffing cocaine, not flower petals. These changes and many others like them have been demanded by official censors or organized groups before the cartoons could be shown in theaters or on television. How the slightly risque gags in some silent cartoons were replaced by rigid standards in the sound film era is the first misadventure covered in this history of censorship in the animation industry. The perpetuation of racial stereotypes in many early cartoons is examined, as are the studios' efforts to stop producing such animation. This is followed by a look at many of the uncensored cartoons, such as Lenny Bruce's Thank You Mask Man and Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat. The censorship of television cartoons is next covered, from the changes made in theatrical releases shown on television to the different standards that apply to small screen animation. The final chapter discusses the many animators who were blacklisted from the industry in the 1950s for alleged sympathies to the Communist Party.

Which 16th-century English composition is referred to by Shakespeare in The Merry Wives of Windsor? What well-known hymn was written by Martin Luther in 1529? And what is a waltzing matilda anyway? (Hint: It's not a dancing young lady.) Studwell's latest collection follows the form and style of his earlier works, The Popular Song Reader and The Christmas Carol Reader, as he relays interesting facts about each song through anecdotes, humor, poetry, and a generally lighthearted yet scholarly approach. In addition to information about each song and its composer, the author also discusses how the song reflected society at the time and how the song itself has influenced popular culture. The book is divided into four sections: American National Songs: armed forces songs, war songs, national anthems, national marches National Songs From Other Countries: songs from Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Israel, Australia General Hymns: religious songs from the 17th century and earlier, and the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries Songs Associated With Religious Events: Easter, Thanksgiving, weddings, funerals The book's readable style is its most important quality as it makes it more approachable than a typical reference book. And vital to its usefulness as a reference book are the indexes--one by song title and another by person or group. Whether used primarily as an enjoyable reference or as an informative reader, The National and Religious Song Reader is bound to provide new insights into familiar songs for all music fans.

Download or read book The Thirty Five Timely Untimely Deaths of Cumberland County written by Mason Ball and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John M. Bischoffberger is a Pennsylvanian doctor adrift in the relative wilds of Maine during the dying years of the great depression. Struggling with a loss of religious faith and retreating from painful memories of The Great War, John has married and set up practice in the town of Naples. As Medical Examiner for Cumberland County, it is also John's job to investigate deaths that occur under unusual or suspicious circumstances. Yet as he goes about his work, he begins to suspect that the deaths he is called upon to document are in fact far from routine. Against his better judgement, he becomes convinced that an uneasy alliance of three itinerants is going about the county, killing. An old woman, a little girl and a thin man are fulfilling some strange and unspoken duty, drowning, suffocating, hanging and the like, men, women and children; each of the three harbouring a profound distrust of the other two, yet still this queer confederacy press on with their murderous work. John confides in local outsider Joseph, an older man who becomes John's only outlet for his impossible fears. All the while the three continue to kill, and the deaths seem to be drawing closer to John: others who may suspect foul play, then acquaintances of John, then perhaps friends, even family members. As the storm clouds of a new world war gather in Europe, and John's rationality slowly unravels, he must find a way to disprove what he has reluctantly come to believe, or to confirm his worst fears and take steps to end the killing spree of the three in the woods, whatever the cost. With a narrative switching between the doctor and the trio of murderers, and inspired by, and including, genuine accounts made by the real Dr. John M. Bischoffberger in his medical journal between 1934 and 1941, the novel weaves about them a fictional and dreamlike story of faith, community, and how we deal with life in the shadow of mortality.

Book excerpt: As Eagles Soar is a romantic historical fiction account of a remarkable woman. Lizzie LaBeau was born into a wealthy family in the Montgomery, Alabama, area in 1880. Her mother dies when she is a small child, and her father tries to compensate by giving Lizzie the best of everything. Her best friend for life, Clara, the daughter of former slaves, was born the same day as Lizzie. The two become inseparable, getting themselves into numerous comical predicaments. Lizzie is a gifted child, beautiful, talented, and full of life. She grows up to become a nurse, serving in both world wars. She meets many famous people along the way, including Ty Cobb, Carole Lombard, Hank Williams, Martin Luther King, Orville and Wilbur Wright, and Andy Devine, as well as numerous Alabama politicians and governors. Along with her many adventures, Lizzie falls in love with two wonderful men and meets Emma, another lifelong friend. As she nears the end of her life, she sits in a nursing home and tells her remarkable life story to a Montgomery reporter. This story embellishes the many amazing accomplishments of women throughout America during these transitional years and is based loosely on the lives of four actual women. The story covers the years 1880 through 1969, with brief glimpses back into the Creek Indian Wars and the War Between the States. Lizzie has a lifetime struggle with religion, racism, elitism, disappointing love affairs, death, war, women’s suffrage, and the change from horse and buggy to men landing on the moon. Indeed, Lizzie LaBeau lived a full life, and the reader will have a greater appreciation for what women like her have accomplished over the years. And the final chapter will tug at your heartstrings.
