Book Hail Impact on Building Envelopes

Download or read book Hail Impact on Building Envelopes written by David A. Paterson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailstorms are capable of inflicting a large amount of damage on building roofs and facades. This research focuses on the prediction of hail damage so that measures can be taken to reduce this damage. Hail characteristics (size, recurrence intervals, etc.) and hailstone impacts on building facades are investigated. The vertical and horizontal components of velocity of a hailstone are treated separately. Measurements and predictions of the vertical velocity are presented. Horizontal velocities of hailstones in gusty winds beneath thunderstorms are estimated using a step by step approach. A brief description of the experimental apparatus used in simulating hail impact on building materials is given. Finally, a method to predict the damage to buildings, using the theory of plate dynamics, is outlined.

Book Hail Resistance of Roofing Products

Download or read book Hail Resistance of Roofing Products written by Sidney H. Greenfeld and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test was developed for evaluating the hail resistance of roofings, in which synthetic hailstones (ice spheres) of various sizes were shot at roof assemblies at their free-fall terminal v * elocities.Indentations, granule loss and roofing fracture were observed. The principal conclusion is that:All roofing materials have some resistance to hail damage, but as the size of the hail increases, a level of impact energy is reached at which damage occurs. This level lies in the range of 1 1/2 to 2 inch (3.8-5.1 cm) hailstones for most prepared roofings.(Author).

Book Hail

Download or read book Hail written by David A. Paterson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailstorms are severe thunderstorms where most of the damage is done by hail. They are capable of causing colossal damage lo both crops and property. Yet, no country has a national Code for hail loading. This paper outlines some of the research carried out at CSIRO's Division of Building Construction and Engineering, North Ryde. This research focuses on some of the characteristics of hail and hail damage. A summary of techniques based on theories of plate dynamics that can be used to predict the hailstone impact on property is given. The information provided in this paper will help engineers and architects to design and select better hail resistant products.

Book excerpt: Hailstorms are severe thunderstorms where most of the damage is done by hail. The damage caused by a severe hailstorm is considerable both in terms of money and human suffering. In this paper, an account of the on-going research on hail at CSIRO Building Construction and Engineering is provided. Research into hail characteristics, hail impact and severe storms is described. This work has culminated in the development of relatively simple analytical methods to predict damage due to hail impact.

Book Hailstone Evaluation of Cladding Materials

Download or read book Hailstone Evaluation of Cladding Materials written by George Vorobieff and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper briefly covers some practical aspects of building in hail risk areas. The properties of hailstones falling from hailstorms were analysed; a test facility was set up at CSIRO to study the impact of hailstones on building materials; the damage to various products from hail testing is tabulated; a specification for a hailstone loading evaluation test is included; and some ideas for architects to consider in hail risk areas are listed Tiles, gutters, skylights, windows, brittle cladding materials and metal sheeting are all at risk during heavy hail. These can now all be tested at CSIRO in their new hail impact facility. Results have shown that thin metal sheet is dented, some tiles can develop hairline cracks, and that age and impact location are important factors for many materials. Hail resistance criteria range from danger to human life down to aesthetic considerations. Architectural design principles include allowing for the dead load of hailstones on sloping roofs, allowing for roof water overflow when hailstones block gutters, and the protection of critical wall cladding elements.

Book Forensic Engineering

Download or read book Forensic Engineering written by Stephen E. Petty and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource that builds a bridge between engineering disciplines and the building sciences and trades, Forensic Engineering: Damage Assessments for Residential and Commercial Structures provides an extensive look into the world of forensic engineering. With a focus on investigations associated with insurance industry claims, the book describes methodologies for performing insurance-related investigations including the causation and origin of damage to residential and commercial structures and/or unhealthy interior environments and adverse effects on the occupants of these structures. Edited by an industry expert with more than 30 years of experience, and authors with more than 100 years of experience in the field, the book takes the technical aspects of engineering and scientific principles and applies them to real-world issues in a non-technical manner. It provides readers with the experiences, investigation methodologies, and investigation protocols used in, and derived from completing thousands of forensic engineering investigations. It begins with providing a baseline methodology for completing forensic investigations and closes with advice on testifying as an expert witness. Much of what must be known in this field is not learned in school, but is based upon experience since recognizing the cause of a building system failure requires a blending of skills from the white collar and blue collar worlds. Such knowledge can be vital since failures (e.g., water entry) often result from construction activities completed out of sequence.. This book details proven methodologies based on over 7,000 field investigations, methodologies which can be followed by both professionals and laymen alike.

Book Hailstorms and Building Envelopes

Download or read book Hailstorms and Building Envelopes written by David A. Paterson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailstorms are severe thunderstorms where most of the damage is done by hail. Hailstorms can occur anywhere outside the equatorial band and the polar regions. The damage caused by a severe hailstorm is considerable in terms of money and human suffering. Researchers working in diversified areas are making efforts to further the current knowledge on hail. In this paper, an account of the on-going research on hail at the Division of Building Construction and Engineering, CSIRO is provided. In particular, work done in the areas of hail characteristics, hail impact and severe storms are described. This work has culminated in the development of relatively simple analytical methods to assess damages due to hail impact. These methods can be applied to building envelope materials to predict key parameters such as dent radius, maximum stress etc. It is possible to refine the envelope design by employing these analytical methods.
