Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past hundred years, haiku has gone far beyond its Japanese origins to become a worldwide phenomenon—with the classic poetic form growing and evolving as it has adapted to the needs of the whole range of languages and cultures that have embraced it. This proliferation of the joy of haiku is cause for celebration—but it can also compel us to go back to the beginning: to look at haiku’s development during the centuries before it was known outside Japan. This in-depth study of haiku history begins with the great early masters of the form—like Basho, Buson, and Issa—and goes all the way to twentieth-century greats, like Santoka. It also focuses on an important aspect of traditional haiku that is less known in the West: haiku art. All the great haiku masters created paintings (called haiga) or calligraphy in connection with their poems, and the words and images were intended to be enjoyed together, enhancing each other, and each adding its own dimension to the reader’s and viewer’s understanding. Here one of the leading haiku scholars of the West takes us on a tour of haiku poetry’s evolution, providing along the way a wealth of examples of the poetry and the art inspired by it.

Book excerpt: Black & White Reflections is a collection of haiku poems written in 2012 and a collection of original photographs taken between 1973 and 1999. Sálongo has been writing haiku poems since 1980 and his first book of haiku and poems; Haiku Dreams Voices From My Third Eye Vol. I was published in 2010. The photographs were taken using various B&W films and film camera formats and processed by the author. Various traditional and non traditional wet darkroom techniques where used to manipulate the film negatives and create the unique images over the 40 years the author worked in film prior to switching to digital cameras in 2006. All of the images in the book except for two were scanned from the original film negatives without any Photoshop post processing for placement into the book. Two images were created in Photoshop from film negatives that had been created in the 1970's but not printed until the mid 1990's when the author began using a scanner to scan his film negatives for printing on a Epson 2200 digital photo printer that allowed him to print 13"x19 photographs. The author now prints all his image of an Epson 24" 7890 archival digital printer on any material that will go through the printer. Sálongo continues to write haiku poems on a daily basis and there will be more books of his haiku and photographs in the future.
