Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter the mind of a madman in the stunning crime novel The Thunder of Nautilus. The story takes place in the sprawling Wiltshire countryside. Malcolm Macbeth is a psychopath. Incarcerated at age eighteen, he spends years as a patient in a psychiatric institution. Once released, he takes revenge by killing the prosecutor he holds responsible for his internment. After the murder, he meets a woman in a nightclub, who invites him for drinks back at her desolate farmhouse, where her accomplice is waiting. They overpower Malcolm and lock him up in the basement. Calling themselves "the disciples of Hades," they are Satanists and have their own version of dark rites planned that will sacrifice Malcolm. Not far from the farmhouse stands a manor house, whose owner is a former forensic psychiatrist who had been consulted in Malcolm's attempted murder case years ago. A cottage near the manor has been purchased by a gay interior decorator named Nigel who takes along a friend to spend some time in the quiet countryside. Their country visit doesn't turn out to be so quiet after all, as investigators discover events that the devil himself could not have conceived in a more hideous and gruesome fashion. Christa Ingrid Stempel grew up in Hamburg, Germany. A fan of gothic writers Daphne du Maurier, Emily Bronte and Mary Shelley, she believes the English countryside's grand houses, drafty castles, and fog-covered moors provide the perfect backdrop for mystery, murder, and dark thoughts. Download or read book The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark written by Dennis Ronald MacDonald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and that he wanted his readers to recognise the Homeric antecedents in Mark's story of Jesus. Mark was composing a prose anti-epic, MacDonald says, presenting Jesus as a suffering hero modeled after but far superior to traditional Greek heroes. Much like Odysseus, Mark's Jesus sails the seas with uncomprehending companions, encounters preternatural opponents, and suffers many things before confronting rivals who have made his house a den of thieves. In his death and burial, Jesus emulates Hector, although unlike Hector Jesus leaves his tomb empty. Mark's minor characters, too, recall Homeric predecessors: Bartimaeus emulates Tiresias; Joseph of Arimathea, Priam; and the women at the tomb, Helen, Hecuba, and Andromache. And, entire episodes in Mark mirror Homeric episodes, including stilling the sea, walking on water, feeding the multitudes, the Triumphal E

Download or read book Second Thoughts About the Second Coming written by Joe Reeves and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book, Second Thoughts About The Second Coming, teacher, author, and systems engineer, Joe Reeves deals with many aspects of the idea of Jesus second coming that are seldom considered by modern Christians; but, he does so from the standpoint of asking several critical questions. The basic questions he asks, and answers, in this book are, can a book of scripture, at some later date, come to mean what it never meant? Can a scriptural text, at a later date, come to mean what the author obviously did not intend it to mean to those of his original envisioned recipients to whom he wrote, and a meaning that the first recipients simply would not have understood? Then based on those answers, he asks and answers several questions about Jesus resurrection, His resurrected nature, and His ascension. Then based on the biblical answers to those questions asks and answers the question about whether or not Jesus and the biblical writers predicted a second coming. Using those questions, and the question of specifically what would those first-century Christians have understood about what modern interpreters call Jesus second coming, as the basis for study, Joe uses his training and experience in systems thinking, Bible, history, cultural anthropology, and logic and philosophical realism to formulate a system of thinking that challenges many of the modern assumptions upon which the four most common doctrines about Jesus second coming are based. For the person who wishes to learn more about how the first Christians would have used, and understood, the writings they received about Jesus and His life after His resurrection, this book is a must read.

Download or read book Q the First Writing about Jesus written by Yoseop Ra and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows readers the formation of Q by exploring how the texts were subjected to redaction four times. As author Yoseop Ra demonstrates, the first redaction of Q conveys the words and deeds of the historical Jesus and then the rest of redactors imposed their own theological interpretation to the words and deeds of Jesus. His argument will provide readers with a fresh look on how the earliest "Jesus movement" was formed in the thirties of the first century CE. Q is a hypothetical document extracted from the common source between Matthew and Luke. Thus, it is not easy to distinguish the different layers of redaction embedded in Q. However, form critical, redaction critical, composition critical, and socio-historical approaches to it makes readers separate the four layers of redaction from Q. Each layer will show how the disciples of Jesus moved from the countryside to Jerusalem via some rural cities expanding their boundary.
Download or read book Jesus and the Manuscripts written by Craig A. Evans and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus and the ManuscriptsCraig A. Evans Jesus and the Manuscripts, by popular author and Bible scholar Craig A. Evans, introduces readers to the diversity and complexity of the ancient literature that records the words and deeds of Jesus. This diverse literature includes the familiar Gospels of the New Testament, the much less familiar literature of the Rabbis and of the Qur'ān, and the extracanonical narratives and brief snippets of material found in fragments and inscriptions. This book critically analyzes important texts and quotations in their original languages and engages the current scholarly discussion. Evans argues that the Gospel of Thomas is not early or independent of the New Testament Gospels but that it should be dated to the late second century. He also argues that Secret Mark, like the recently published Gospel of Jesus' Wife, is probably a modern forgery. Of special interest is the question of how long the autographs of New Testament writings remained in circulation. Evans argues that the evidence suggests that most of these autographs remained available for copying and study for more than one hundred years and thus stabilized the text. Key points and features: - Written by popular author and Bible scholar Craig A. Evans - Includes 20+ pages of high-quality color photos - Walks readers through the various works of ancient literature, both biblical and non-biblical, that mention Jesus - Critically analyzes important texts and quotations in their original languages and engages the current scholarly discussion
