Book The Spanish Fiscal Transition

Download or read book The Spanish Fiscal Transition written by Sara Torregrosa Hetland and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of the process and outcomes of the tax reform, with a focus on progressivity, redistribution, and inequality. Between 1977 and 1986, Spain underwent a comprehensive tax reform which shaped its fiscal system until today. It was made in connection with the transition to democracy and indeed was understood as a fundamental part of the political change. The book situates the reform both within Spanish history and international trends in tax systems and connects it to the expansion of the welfare state and regional decentralization in Spain. The analysis reveals that the tax system failed to attain progressivity, and significant levels of fraud had a noticeable impact on inequality. Because of this, fiscal redistribution remained limited. In the new political economy of the second globalization, late democratic and fiscal transitioners were unable to emulate the path of the welfare state forerunners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Jim Parish Award for Documentation and Publication of Local and Regional History, Webb County Heritage Foundation, 2015 Present-day smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border is a professional, often violent, criminal activity. However, it is only the latest chapter in a history of illicit business dealings that stretches back to 1848, when attempts by Mexico and the United States to tax commerce across the Rio Grande upset local trade and caused popular resentment. Rather than acquiesce to what they regarded as arbitrary trade regulations, borderlanders continued to cross goods and accepted many forms of smuggling as just. In Border Contraband, George T. Díaz provides the first history of the common, yet little studied, practice of smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border. In Part I, he examines the period between 1848 and 1910, when the United States' and Mexico's trade concerns focused on tariff collection and on borderlanders' attempts to avoid paying tariffs by smuggling. Part II begins with the onset of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, when national customs and other security forces on the border shifted their emphasis to the interdiction of prohibited items (particularly guns and drugs) that threatened the state. Díaz's pioneering research explains how greater restrictions have transformed smuggling from a low-level mundane activity, widely accepted and still routinely practiced, into a highly profitable professional criminal enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 Sara A. Whaley Prize of the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) A first-of-its-kind study of the working-class culture of resistance on the Honduran North Coast and the radical organizing that challenged US capital and foreign intervention at the onset of the Cold War, examining gender, race, and place. On May 1, 1954, striking banana workers on the North Coast of Honduras brought the regional economy to a standstill, invigorating the Honduran labor movement and placing a series of demands on the US-controlled banana industry. Their actions ultimately galvanized a broader working-class struggle and reawakened long-suppressed leftist ideals. The first account of its kind in English, Roots of Resistance explores contemporary Honduran labor history through the story of the great banana strike of 1954 and centers the role of women in the narrative of the labor movement. Drawing on extensive firsthand oral history and archival research, Suyapa G. Portillo Villeda examines the radical organizing that challenged US capital and foreign intervention in Honduras at the onset of the Cold War. She reveals the everyday acts of resistance that laid the groundwork for the 1954 strike and argues that these often-overlooked forms of resistance should inform analyses of present-day labor and community organizing. Roots of Resistance highlights the complexities of transnational company hierarchies, gender and race relations, and labor organizing that led to the banana workers' strike and how these dynamics continue to reverberate in Honduras today.

Book The Power and the Money

Download or read book The Power and the Money written by Noel Maurer and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing financial chaos, Porfirio Diaz’s strategy in the 1880s was to create a bank with a legal monopoly over lending to the government and to enforce elites’ property rights in order to get their support. This book shows how Mexican leaders, even after the Mexican Revolution, failed to alter these basic economic and political policies, resulting in a continuing high level of financial and industrial concentration.

Book Historical Turning Points in Spanish Economic Growth and Development 1808 2008

Download or read book Historical Turning Points in Spanish Economic Growth and Development 1808 2008 written by Concha Betrán and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the main historical turning points in the Spanish economy and the related challenges it faced. It focuses on six turning points that changed the direction of the Spanish economy, and identifies the economic, social or political origin of these watersheds. It also compares the Spanish trajectory with the international one, exploring the macroeconomic context in which these turning points happened, as well as the external and internal constraints on domestic political choices for a small country like Spain. The book focuses on how Spain faced up to each turning point, the reforms that were implemented, the differences between the Spanish response and that of other countries, the results of the policies enacted and what problems were not tackled. This is an interesting and unique perspective as most of the turning points in economic history are generally studies from the viewpoint of core countries such as the UK, US or Germany. The ultimate objective is to learn useful lessons from Spanish economic history in order to better face future turning points.

Book State Formation in the Liberal Era

Download or read book State Formation in the Liberal Era written by Ben Fallaw and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State Formation in the Liberal Era offers a nuanced exploration of the uneven nature of nation making and economic development in Peru and Mexico. Zeroing in on the period from 1850 to 1950, the book compares and contrasts the radically different paths of development pursued by these two countries. Mexico and Peru are widely regarded as two great centers of Latin American civilization. In State Formation in the Liberal Era, a diverse group of historians and anthropologists from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Latin America compare how the two countries advanced claims of statehood from the dawning of the age of global liberal capitalism to the onset of the Cold War. Chapters cover themes ranging from foreign banks to road building and labor relations. The introductions serve as an original interpretation of Peru’s and Mexico’s modern histories from a comparative perspective. Focusing on the tensions between disparate circuits of capital, claims of statehood, and the contested nature of citizenship, the volume spans disciplinary and geographic boundaries. It reveals how the presence (or absence) of U.S. influence shaped Latin American history and also challenges notions of Mexico’s revolutionary exceptionality. The book offers a new template for ethnographically informed comparative history of nation building in Latin America.

Book excerpt: Mormons first came to Mexico as soldiers during the Mexican-American War and later as missionaries, refugees, and settlers. Just South of Zion assembles new scholarship on the first century of Mormon history in Mexico, from 1847 to 1947. The essays cover topics such as polygamy, colonization, the role of women in Mormon local worship, indigenous intellectuals, Mormon transnational identity, and the role of violence and masculinity in Mormon identity. Representing a broad variety of scholarship from Mexican, US, and Mormon historical studies, the volume will be recognized as a useful survey of religious pluralism in Mexico. Unlike earlier books on the subject, it does not include religious testimony or confession, offering historians a chance to reconsider the significance of Mexico’s Mormon experience. A glossary of LDS terminology makes the book especially useful for students and readers new to the topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As governments the world over work to sustain public policy and develop much needed policy initiatives, there is increasing need for better budgetary management and sound evaluation of both past and prospective policies. Contributors focus specifically on the important links between budgeting, auditing, and policy evaluation. The authors identify both commonalities and divergences and make comparative statements of the consequences of these for the policy process.
