El libro integra el discurso acerca de la Ciudad Activa dentro del contexto urbano de las últimas décadas, a la vez que lo aborda desde un punto de vista conceptual para proponer su caracterización. El núcleo principal del texto presenta una serie de estrategias para avanzar en la dirección de la Ciudad Activa mediante casos de estudio en dieciséis ciudades diferentes que permiten extraer recomendaciones y una guía de evaluación. En cualquier caso, hay que advertir que la Ciudad Activa no es un destino, sino un proceso de perfeccionamiento continuo que no tiene límite. Es un work in progress permanente.
