Sin embargo, no está claro que semejante defensa de la libre responsabilidad sea la actitud realmente más extendida en nuestra sociedad, en la que lo que parece generalizado en creciente medida es la sistemática búsqueda de argumentos exculpatorios que minimicen la aceptación de responsabilidad por parte de los individuos (el ambiente familiar, el contexto económico, la inestabilidad emocional...). Desde el punto de vista teórico, estaríamos ante una paradoja. De tanto exculpar al individuo a base de responsabilizar a las estructuras, hemos terminado por convertirle en el eslabón más débil de la cadena. La misma modernidad que en un principio pretendía hacer descansar el sentido del mundo sobre el ser humano, convirtiéndolo en la nueva clave para justificar lo real, al final ha terminado por considerarlo un elemento incapaz de sostener nada ni hacerse cargo de acción alguna a poco que ésta tenga consecuencias negativas.

Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive analysis of the thought of Ignacio Ellacuría, the Jesuit philosopher-theologian martyred for his work on behalf of Latin America's oppressed peoples. While serving as president of the Jesuit-run University of Central America in the midst of El Salvador's brutal civil war, Ellacuría was also a prolific writer. His advocacy on behalf of the country's persecuted majority provoked the enmity of the Salvadoran political establishment. On November 16, 1989, members of the Salvadoran military entered the university's campus and murdered Ellacuría, along with five other Jesuit priests and two women. Kevin F. Burke, SJ, shows why Ellacuría is significant not only as a martyr but also as a theologian. Ellacuría effectively integrated philosophy, history, anthropology, and sociopolitical analysis into his theological reflections on salvation, spirituality, and the church to create an original contribution to liberation theology. Ellacuría's writings directly address one of the most vexing issues in theology today: can theologians account for the demands arising from both the particularity of their various social-historical situations and also the universal claims of Christian revelation? Burke explains how Ellacuría bases theology in a philosophy of historical reality—the "ground beneath the cross"—and interprets the suffering of "the crucified peoples" in the light of Jesus' crucifixion. Ellacuría thus inserts the theological realities of salvation and transcendence squarely within the course of human events, and he connects these to the Christian mandate to "take the crucified peoples down from their crosses." Placing Ellacuría's thought in the context of historical trends within the Roman Catholic Church, particularly Vatican II and the rise of liberation theology in Latin America, Burke argues that Ellacuría makes a distinctive contribution to contemporary Catholic theology.

Como estrategias auxiliares se plantea lo que es la Reingeniería de Valores y Virtudes, se analizan las Bases Filosóficas para Jerarquizar los Valores Operantes, Reales; y se propone la sana jerarquía de los Nueve Valores Universales, así como el rechazo de los Contravalores. El libro concluye con una explicación apasionante: ¿Quién Soy Yo? A la vez que se exponen los Fundamentos Filosóficos de la Dignidad de la Persona.

It was in that city in the sixteenth century that, prompted by his Dominican brothers, such as Bartolome de las Casas, who were defending the indigenous people of Latin America against the Spanish conquistadores, Francisco de Vitoria planted the seed of today's international human rights movement. This volume presents in original languages the eleven papers given in Salamanca as well as the statement adopted by the delegates at the end of the meeting. The potential for conflict and recrimination is built into the situation. The main consumer countries are poor and predominantly agricultural. Cocaine traffic in the Western Hemisphere is a particularly serious example of how this conflict of interests plays out. Producing countries and consuming countries each blame the other, and depending on which side they are on, advocate either demand-side or supply-side solutions-controlling the demand of users in the United States for cocaine versus controlling the demand of users in the United States for cocaine versus controlling the supply from South America. U.S. concerns are fairly unambiguous. Cocaine imports have increased five to tenfold since 1977 and abuse of cocaine and its derivative âcrackâ has become a serious social problem in the United States. The position of producing countries is also clear-cut. Political elites in Third World countries view antidrug crusades with hostility because they impose significant new burdens and create formidable new challenges. The White Labyrinth explains why it is so difficult to take effective action against the cocaine problem. It looks closely at problems faced by producing countries: the economic and political pressures that make it so difficult to address the problem from a supply-side perspective. It analyzes the devastating pressure tactics of âcoca lobbiesâ and cocaine trafficking syndicates. It explores the complex relationships between the cocaine industry and leftist revolutionary movements. It examines the negative consequences of actions taken by the United States. The White Labyrinth is an in-depth examination of a problem that is of paramount public concern.
