Download or read book Translating the City written by Hossam Aldy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city is a highly fragmented, heterogeneous subject; those who study, analyze and question it make a use of a variety of disciplines and methods and have different areas of expertise. How is a dialogue built between heterogeneous urban contexts and urban researchers, architects, developers, anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists? What capacity do concepts and methods have to travel from one context to another? How can they be transferred? The strength of Urban Translations lies in its disciplinary and geographical comparison and dialogue on a global scale. It openly targets an international audience, bringing together leading researchers from a variety of disciplines (urban planning, sociology, architecture and anthropology) and presenting case studies from highly contrasting urban settings, including Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Cape Town, Dubai, Montreal, Geneva, Lisbon, Ljubljana and Berlin.
Download or read book Rethinking the City written by Vincent Kaufmann and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditions for travel have changed and are still changing the world a world experiencing what John Urry calls the mobility turn . Since World War Two we have been moving faster and going further a fact that has profoundly changed our way of experiencing both the world and ourselves. The explosion of low-cost travel options has similarly had an important impact on the economy, adding to the globalization of markets and transformations in modes of production. It is no longer possible to think of nation-states as autonomous vis-a-vis one another, nor of cities or regions as homogenous spaces delimited by clear-cut borders. Societies, like Western cities, are redefining themselves through mobility. What does this mean for the city for its governability and governance? In this book Vincent Kaufmann assesses the urban implications of the mobility turn. He explores the modern urban phenomenon from the point of view of the mobility capacities of its players their motility. He asks that the reader consider the idea of a city or region as the product or an arrangement of a specific set of motilities. Re-Thinking the City seeks to identify how the motility of individuals, goods, and information acts as an organizing principle or rather, the organizing principle of contemporary urban change, and then aims to examine the consequences for urban governance by exploring the channels through which individual and collective motility can be regulated.
Download or read book The Making of the Common in Social Relations written by Alexandre Cotovio Martins and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originates from a basic, yet innovative question: in which forms of qualification and justification do social actors support themselves to engage in common actions? This inquiry brings to the field of sociological and anthropological analysis the need to take into account socially accepted forms of qualifications of common action and the ways by which they are brought to social situations, and, simultaneously, the need to understand the processes of elaboration of justifications which may demonstrate to social actors that acting in common is worthwhile. As such, this volume analyses the processes by which social actors qualify and communalize certain aspects of their life and also produce justifications that give sense to the ways and means of actions thus brought to the stage of social life. The book will appeal to the wider academic public, namely scholars and post-graduate students, in the areas of sociology and anthropology, and, furthermore, to all professionals in the field of social sciences, throughout the world. In addition, given its treatment of these domains, the volume will also be of interest to professionals in areas such as health, education, and urban planning.

Download or read book Teaching Space Place and Literature written by Robert T. Tally Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space, place and mapping have become key concepts in literary and cultural studies. The transformational effects of postcolonialism, globalization, and the rise of ever more advanced information technologies helped to push space and spatiality into the foreground, as traditional spatial or geographic limits are erased or redrawn. Teaching Space, Place and Literature surveys a broad expanse of literary critical, theoretical, historical territories, as it presents both an introduction to teaching spatial literary studies and an essential guide to scholarly research. Divided into sections on key concepts and issues; teaching strategies; urban spaces; place, race and gender and spatiality, periods and genres, this comprehensive book is the ideal way to approach the teaching of space and place in the humanities classroom.
Download or read book Convivialities written by Amanda Wise and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a time of rising anti-immigrant fervour and attacks on multiculturalism. As Stuart Hall argued over twenty years ago, the capacity to live with difference is the pressing issue of our time. This is true perhaps now more than ever. This collection takes a critical look at the ‘conviviality turn’ in our understanding of coexistence and urban multiculture. Drawing on case studies out of the UK, Europe, Australia and Canada, contributors to this collection explore the practices and dispositions of everyday people who negotiate a ‘shared life’ in their culturally diverse neighbourhoods and communities, and the complexities and ambivalences that make up ‘living together’. Chapters focus on spaces of encounter, navigations of friendship and humour across difference, and the networks of hope and care that exist alongside experiences of racism. A theme of the book is that we live neither in a world where convivial multiculture has been accomplished nor one where it has been lost: it is, as it must be, a work in progress. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Intercultural Studies.

Download or read book Innovations Durables Appropriate Sustainabilities written by Marc Emery and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2002-10-25 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst France's contemporary architecture is highly regarded throughout the world, her architects have hardly been leading protagonists in the debate on ecological building. The developments featured in this book, however, should serve to correct this impression. Between 1999- 2002 Electricité de France (EDF) initiated an ambitious research programme to bring together first-class architects and innovative technologies involving renewable energy, strategies to reduce energy consumption, newly developed software programs to support ecologically oriented architectural design etc. The goal was to create sustainable and aesthetically pleasing architecture. This book documents the submissions from both established and younger architects. Amongst those included are Jacques Ferrier, Christian Hauvette, Marc Mimram and François Roche.
Download or read book Algeria 1830 2000 written by Benjamin Stora and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A particularly vicious and bloody civil war has racked Algeria for a decade. Amnesty International notes that since 1992, in a population of 28 million, 80,000 people have been reported killed, and the actual total is almost certainly higher. This terrible war overshadows Algeria's long and complex history and its prominence on the world economic stage--second in size among African nations, Algeria has the longest Mediterranean coastline and contains the world's fifth-largest natural gas reserves. Algeria, 1830-2000 is a comprehensive narrative history of the country. Benjamin Stora, widely recognized as the leading expert on Algeria, presents the story of this turbulent area from the start of formal French colonialism in the early nineteenth century, through the prolonged war for independence in the latter 1950s, to the internal strife of the present day. This book adapts and updates three short volumes published originally in French by La Découverte. For this English edition, Stora has written a new introductory chapter on Algeria's colonial period (1830-1954) and has revised the final section to bring the volume up to date.
