Book excerpt: COST Action 341 investigates the problem of habitat fragmentation due to transformation infrastructure which is recognised as a significant factor that continues to contribute towards the decline in biodiversity in Europe. 16 European countries and one international organisation have joined forces under COST Action 341 in order to establish the current situation with regards to habitat fragmentation caused by transportation networks in Europe, and to identify best practice guidelines, methodologies, indicators and technical designs for the avoidance, mitigation and compensation of adverse ecological effects. This European review is one of the products of COST Action 341. It is based on information contained within 13 national state of the art reports. The European review explains the problem of habitat fragmentation due to transportation infrastructure in Europe and presents the types of solutions implemented, i.e. avoidance techniques and mitigation and compensatory measures. Furthermore it elaborates on the wider economic and political aspects of habitat fragmentation and provides recommendations on how the problem should be addressed in the future.
