Book Himalayan Languages

Download or read book Himalayan Languages written by Anju Saxena and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2004 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its many and diverse languages, including some with very long documented histories, its cultural diversity, and its widespread multilingualism- both the stable and transient kind- the Himalayan region is a treasure trove of empirical data for linguistic research on language typology and universals, historical linguistics, language contact and areal linguistics. Himalayan Languages contains contributions on Himalayan linguistics written by some of the leading experts in the field. The volume is divided into three parts: First, a general overview is given of the linguistic study of Himalayan languages and language communities. The second part offers synchronic studies of individual languages of the region (Indo-Aryan languages Shina and Kalasha, and Tibeto-Burman languages Belhare, Magar, Kinnauri, Classical Tibetan and Thangmi). The papers in the third part of the volume address topics in historical and areal linguistics, with an emphasis on the Tibeto-Burman languages of the region, discussing grammaticalization processes (in Sunwar, Newar, Seke, Tshangla and Bantawa) and the subgrouping of Tibeto-Burman.

Book Polymorphous Linguistics

Download or read book Polymorphous Linguistics written by Salikoko Mufwene and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005-05-13 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James McCawley (1938-1999) was one of the most significant linguists of the latter half of the twentieth century. His legacy to a generation of linguists encompasses not only his work in phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and the philosophy of language but also his emphasis on bridging research in linguistics with that in other disciplines, from anthropology and psychology to physics and biology. This book, written by his former students—all now scholars in their own right—pays tribute to McCawley by pursuing questions about language that engaged him during his career. The variety of perspectives in these essays reflects McCawley's eclecticism as well his belief that what is important in scholarly work is not the analytic framework used but the insights reached. The book considers topics in phonology; syntax, with several essays on Indic languages (in which McCawley had a special interest) as well as one on African-American English; tense, aspect, and mood; semantics and pragmatics, with essays in these areas grouped together to reflect the intertwining of McCawley's work on these subjects; knowledge of language; and the treatment of language, with its implicit colonial biases, in the 11th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica.

Book Foundations of Computational Imaging

Download or read book Foundations of Computational Imaging written by Charles A. Bouman and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting a set of classical and emerging methods previously unavailable in a single resource, Foundations of Computational Imaging: A Model-Based Approach is the first book to define a common foundation for the mathematical and statistical methods used in computational imaging. The book brings together a blend of research with applications in a variety of disciplines, including applied math, physics, chemistry, optics, and signal processing, to address a collection of problems that can benefit from a common set of methods. Readers will find basic techniques of model-based image processing, a comprehensive treatment of Bayesian and regularized image reconstruction methods, and an integrated treatment of advanced reconstruction techniques, such as majorization, constrained optimization, alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and Plug-and-Play methods for model integration. Foundations of Computational Imaging can be used in courses on model-based or computational imaging, advanced numerical analysis, data science, numerical optimization, and approximation theory. It will also prove useful to researchers or practitioners in medical, scientific, commercial, and industrial imaging.

Book Creoles their Substrates and Language Typology

Download or read book Creoles their Substrates and Language Typology written by Claire Lefebvre and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since creole languages draw their properties from both their substrate and superstrate sources, the typological classification of creoles has long been a major issue for creolists, typologists, and linguists in general. Several contradictory proposals have been put forward in the literature. For example, creole languages typologically pair with their superstrate languages (Chaudenson 2003), with their substrate languages (Lefebvre 1998), or even, creole languages are alike (Bickerton 1984) such that they constitute a “definable typological class” (McWhorter 1998). This book contains 25 chapters bearing on detailed comparisons of some 30 creoles and their substrate languages. As the substrate languages of these creoles are typologically different, the detailed investigation of substrate features in the creoles leads to a particular answer to the question of how creoles should be classified typologically. The bulk of the data show that creoles reproduce the typological features of their substrate languages. This argues that creoles cannot be claimed to constitute a definable typological class.
