Book Gymnastic Games Classified

Download or read book Gymnastic Games Classified written by Ernst Hermann Arnold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gymnastic Games Classified In a system of gymnastics, games may be used for hygienic, developmental and educational purposes. For general hygienic ends their value is great, if for no other reason, than that it usually requires a large air space, oftentimes outdoors, to play them. On the other hand, the hygienic value of games is a doubtful one, because the movements occurring in games can only be predetermined in general. That means that they cannot be graded as to quantity or quality with exactness. Exactness, however, in these two things, is an absolute necessity where gymnastics are given for hygienic ends. Such exactness being possible with formal gymnastic exercises, these therefore must always be given a preference where exactness in quantity and quality of exercise is desirable or necessary. The same may be said to be true of the developmental effect of exercises occurring in games. If it be difficult to trace the effect, formal gymnastic movements have upon the development of this tissue or that organ, it is certainly impossible to exactly predict the effect which the unpredetermined movements in games might have. Formal gymnastics will always be far superior in this respect to games. To turn to the educational purposes of games. They are mental and moral ones. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Gymnastic Games The need of a compact, practical collection of games for gymnastic teachers has led to. The preparation of this book. The aim has been to make it simple and direct, and to give a few suggestions that may be helpful in its use. It has seemed best to arrange the material under three heads rather than to plan an orderly progression, which would separate widely games of like character. Games are valuable in physical education as a test of what the pupil has gained from his gymnastic training in alertness and self-control, and also as a means of training him yet further in these directions and in moral qualities as well. This physical, mental, and moral training must go hand in hand with joyous recreation, which is essential to any game played in the right spirit. The collection has been made with these thoughts in view; and, to insure its being practical, the greater number of games have been played or used in our school and gymnasium work. Book Games and Dances Classic Reprint

Download or read book Games and Dances Classic Reprint written by William A. Stecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Games and Dances Increased attention to the physical welfare of children and adults, also the greatly increased number of playgrounds, has created a demand for a separate and enlarged edition of those activities of the Philadelphia Hand books of Lessons in Physical Training and Games, found under the headings of Games, song-plays, Dances and Roundels. The plan followed in the other books is also adhered to here, namely, the games and dances suitable for children or adults of each particular school-grade or age - group are printed together. This procedure places into the hands of a teacher a graded selection of tried and effective games and dances. The games and dances are arranged in nine progressive grades. Games marked (r) can be played in a room as well as in a playground. In an appendix a limited selection of quiet games and problems for hot weather is presented. This is followed by a list of track and field events which may be undertaken on the average playground, and by the records which the ordinary boy and girl should make. Then come seven compositions suited for mass drills on play days or field days. Lastly comes much valuable information relating to the space necessary for different kinds of play, to play courts, to the preparation playground teachers should have, to programs, salaries, etc., etc. Games and plays may be classified (a) into play activities upon stationary apparatus of various kinds, and (b) into play without stationary apparatus. Into the first group fall the playful activities upon the swinging and traveling rings, giant strides, swings, low horizontal bars, ladders, poles, teeter boards, and like forms of suitable play apparatus for children and adults. These are all forms of appliances upon which any one without gymnastic training and without the aid of a teacher of gymnastics or of play may amuse himself to his heart's content. Quite a number of easy stunts may be performed upon such apparatus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Athletic Gymnastic Exercises Gums of every description formed a most important part of the national events of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The principal of the four games publicly solemnised in Greece were the Olympic; but games of different kinds were exercised by the early Romans, which consisted of chariot and horse-racin g, combats, and theatrical sports. They likewise exercised them selves before bathing in leaping, running, throwing the javelin, quoit, &c. The athletic exercises practised among these nations consisted of wrestling, boxing, and other such exercises, requiring great strength. Prizes were given to those who came of victors, likewise many privileges were granted to them. The Olympic games, the chief of the festivals of the Greeks, were celebrated every fifth year, and consisted of religious ceremonies, athletic contests, and races. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gymnastic Exercises for Elementary Schools: Supplemented by Fancy Steps and Games In selecting and arranging the material for this book, I have tried to meet the demand especially of those teachers who are being more and more called upon to add to their curriculum this branch of physical education, namely, gymnastics. Several years of experience in elementary grades and in normal teaching have shown what the grade teacher, as well as the normal pupil, would find essential and helpful in teaching gymnastics. A teacher's text-book to meet the general needs must be of such a nature that the simple and combined movements which it describes may be easily understood and accurately reproduced. This is provided for by definite descriptions of all movements, positions, and combinations, and by illustrations of many of the fundamental positions. The use of technical terms is reduced to a minimum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Handbook of School Gymnastics of the Swedish System

Download or read book Handbook of School Gymnastics of the Swedish System written by Baron Nils Posse and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of School-Gymnastics of the Swedish System: With One Hundred Consecutive Tables of Exercises and an Appendix of Classified Lists of Movements The history of Swedish gymnastics in America may be said to have begun with the work of Dr. George H. Taylor, who, after studying in Sweden, introduced the "movement cure" into this country, and who for years was the only American writer on this subject. He was soon followed by stray medical gymnasts who located in the larger cities of the East. Yet their work seems to have been confined to a small area, for as late as seven years ago very little was known of medical gymnastics even among physicians; and as for the educational branch, no one seemed to have heard of it. The author of this book was surprised to find his profession looked upon as one of the lowest. That a masseur or gymnast needed to possess not only a good general education, but a professional one as well, was known to but few. During the last five years, however, gymnastics have been slowly, but surely, advancing towards a place among the sciences, and it will not be long before we shall begin to see a marked change in the national characteristics. In 1887 the author published a little pamphlet entitled "Medical Gymnastics," which chanced to fall into the hands of a noted philanthropist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of School-Gymnastics of the Swedish System: With 100 Consecutive Tables of Exercises and an Appendix of Classified Lists of Movements The author objects most sincerely to making teach ers into machines, and desires that this book be merely a guide for those who are already familiar with the subject, and who can couple their individuality to that of another, and who are teachers, not imitators. The tables have been arranged so as to suit all the condi tions of a school; and with the progressive lists at the end of the book, a teacher of gymnastics can easily expand the tables so as to make them correspond to any conditions under which he is teaching. Those who desire to learn more about the rationale of the system are referred to The Swedish System of Edn cational Gymnastics (published by Lee Shepard.
