But in the aftermath of the tragic shooting deaths at Virginia Tech in 2007, the debate on whether guns should be permitted at colleges and universities has intensified. Dozens of states have considered proposals to lift bans on concealed weapons at colleges and universities, but so far none have been successful. While there is no research on the effect of allowing guns at colleges and universities when it comes to shooting violence, according to "Violence Prevention: The Evidence" (World Health Organization, 2009) "jurisdictions with restrictive firearms legislation and lower firearms ownership tend to have lower levels of gun violence. Measures include bans, licensing schemes, minimum ages for buyers, background checks and safe storage requirements." Students for Concealed Carry on Campus and other right-to-carry activists argue that college campuses would be safer if students and other private citizens (faculty, staff, and visitors) were allowed to carry concealed weapons in order to protect themselves. However, a growing body of evidence shows that concealed carry permit holders are a threat to public safety. The American Association of State Colleges and Universities and more than 90 colleges and universities from 24 states have signed a resolution by the Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus that they are opposed to legislation that would mandate that colleges and universities allow students to carry concealed weapons on campus. According to the association, 23 states currently allow public campuses or state systems to decide their own weapons policies, with nearly all choosing to be "gun-free" ("The Denver Post," Dec. 2, 2009).

Because of remarkably effective gun-safe policies, deaths by firearms on college campuses are 1,000 times less frequent than in the U.S. public at large. Drawing on crime data submitted in compliance with the Clery Act and public reports of those crimes, this study inventories every documented homicide at a U.S. college or university between 2001 and 2016, making a compelling argument for using gun-safe campuses as guides for broader public safety.

With gun control being one of the most widely contested topics in both media and society, understanding how various cohorts perceive firearms is imperative in order to reach a common ground. The researchers conducted surveys at four different universities in the United States; Illinois State, Sam Houston, South Carolina, and South Florida. The questions were designed to measure students' interpretation of the Second Amendment, how they perceive firearms, and whether they feel firearms should be permitted on campus. The results showed that those who tend to be more favorable towards the Second Amendment and right to carry on campus are males who are criminal justice majors and go to university in the South. The results also showed that those who grew up in a household with firearms, and those who receive their gun control news from personal research are also more favorable towards campus carry and the right to bear arms.

Book excerpt: With some states now allowing their colleges and universities to have concealed weapons on campus, the purpose of this study was to determine how undergraduate students felt about the possibility of concealed-carry becoming a part of their lives. While this research assessed student attitudes about gun ownership, it also explored how their personality and demographic characteristics related to whether they supported having guns on their campus. This study utilized a cross-sectional survey research design that comprised 428 undergraduate students from several large classroom sections at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in New Britain, Connecticut. The research found that while CCSU students supported Americans in their right to own guns they did not support the right of their fellow students in being able to have concealed-carry on their own campus, regardless of whether they had a gun permit. In this situation, CCSU students were skeptical of gun use being able to protect people from crime and also felt guns were possibly used to stimulate crimes, particularly when people are angry or drinking heavily. This research supports other studies of student attitudes about guns on campus, however, more research on concealed-carry needs to be conducted to determine the effects of concealed-carry on other college campuses.

Book excerpt: In 2010, more than 105,000 people were injured or killed in the United States as the result of a firearm-related incident. Recent, highly publicized, tragic mass shootings in Newtown, CT; Aurora, CO; Oak Creek, WI; and Tucson, AZ, have sharpened the American public's interest in protecting our children and communities from the harmful effects of firearm violence. While many Americans legally use firearms for a variety of activities, fatal and nonfatal firearm violence poses a serious threat to public safety and welfare. In January 2013, President Barack Obama issued 23 executive orders directing federal agencies to improve knowledge of the causes of firearm violence, what might help prevent it, and how to minimize its burden on public health. One of these orders directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to, along with other federal agencies, immediately begin identifying the most pressing problems in firearm violence research. The CDC and the CDC Foundation asked the IOM, in collaboration with the National Research Council, to convene a committee tasked with developing a potential research agenda that focuses on the causes of, possible interventions to, and strategies to minimize the burden of firearm-related violence. Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence focuses on the characteristics of firearm violence, risk and protective factors, interventions and strategies, the impact of gun safety technology, and the influence of video games and other media.

The American public is evenly split on the issue. Gun-rights supporters say shooters specifically target gun-free spaces such as college campuses. And many students say their constitutional right to bear arms shouldn't end when they walk on campus. But those opposing guns on campus say students with gun permits are not necessarily trained to stop violent crimes. They also note the unique nature of students on college campuses: Young adults' self-control brain functions are not yet fully developed, students often engage in heavy drinking, and an increasing number of students are reporting anxiety and other mental health problems. All of this, say foes of guns on campuses, means firearms will make campuses less safe. Debate is also fierce over whether campus security forces should be armed and how colleges and universities can improve counseling services to identify potentially violent students.

The commercialization of research is one of the most significant contemporary features of US higher education, yet we know surprisingly little about how scientists perceive and experience commercial rewards. A Fractured Profession is the first book to systematically examine the implications of commercialization for both universities and faculty members from the perspective of academic scientists. Drawing on richly detailed interviews with sixty-one scientists at four universities across the United States, sociologist David R. Johnson explores how an ideology of commercialism produces intraprofessional conflict in academia. The words of scientists themselves reveal competing constructions of status, conflicting norms, and divergent career paths and professional identities. Commercialist scientists embrace a professional ideology that emphasizes the creation of technologies that control societal uncertainties and advancing knowledge toward particular—and financial—ends. Traditionalist scientists, on the other hand, often find themselves embattled and threatened by university and federal emphasis on commercialization. They are less concerned about issues such as conflicts of interest and corruption than they are about unequal rewards, unequal conditions of work, and conflicts of commitment to university roles and basic science. Arguing that the division between commercialists and traditionalists represents a new form of inequality in the academic profession, this book offers an incisive look into the changing conditions of work in an era of academic capitalism. Focusing on how the profit motive is reshaping higher education and redefining what faculty are supposed to do, this book will appeal to scientists and academics, higher education scholars, university administrators and policy makers, and students considering a career in science.

Currently there is only on [sic] state who has legislated the concealed carry must be allowed on campus, there needs to be a nation wide effort to get this passed on all campus. [sic] The objectives would be to get concealed legislature passed in the appropriate government bodies allowing for concealed carry and then to get colleges and universities on board to accept such a policy. The next objective, by allowing concealed carry on campuses there should be an overall decrease in violent crimes, and in the instance of a school shooter situation the loss of live [sic] can be minimized if a concealed weapon carrier is present. In conclusion, concealed carry should be implemented across the board, not only would it prevent crimes from occurring, it would support the rights of individuals granted by the constitution. [sic].
