This book was released on 2007-02-22 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a biography about Dan Thornton, a highly successful and well known purebred beef cattle producer (1937-1953) and an effective, flamboyant but controversial Colorado Governor (1951-1955). From humble beginnings as the son of sharecroppers in West Texas, to president of the Texas 4-H Clubs at age 16, to the sale of two Hereford bulls for a world record price ($50,000 each) at the 1945 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO, to a record Hereford sale in 1947, to winning the Governorship of Colorado as a last minute replacement candidate at 39 years of age, to being largely responsible for the location of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, Dan Thornton's story is an interesting and exciting adventure. He was a friend with unknowns and celebrities alike, including Dwight Eisenhower, Bob Hope, Randolph Scott, Lauritz Melchior and Ben Hogan. He campaigned early for Eisenhower for U.S. President. He was Colorado's super salesman from cherries, beef, uranium, and coal to interstate highways and tourism. His grave marker in Gunnison, CO is inscribed with the tribute, "A Man Who Matched Our Mountains."

Book Colorado a Guide to the Highest State

Download or read book Colorado a Guide to the Highest State written by Harry Hansen and published by New York : Hastings House. This book was released on 1970 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado Guide is one of the shining accomplishments of the Federal Writers, who were recruited by the WPA in the days of the great depression to record the dynamic story of their State. So fruitful were their door-to-door inquiries that the public has acclaimed their labors and called for their book ever since. In the last few years it has become evident that the state was outgrowing its guide. The spectacular facts of history remained unaltered, but practically everything else burst its seams. The cities pushed beyond their limits the colleges were jammed with youth; the hard-surfaced roads unlocked remote natural wonder; the rushing rivers created dozens of new lakes; even the snowclad mountains yielded to airlift. A thorough revision was called for--and here it is. Here is the parade of the cities: Denver, the Mile-High Metropolis, building convention halls and hotels in the shadow of the gold-plated Capitol; Colorado Springs, gateway to NORAD, Pike's Peak, and the US Air Force Academy; Boulder, multiplying scientific laboratories of national renown; Pueblo, rolling steel; Aspen, spreading culture in summer and training ski jumpers in winter; even Lakewood, carved out of Denver's side, latest of the big ones. Ever since Zebulon Pike stood awe-struck before the towering Rockies Americans have flocked to Colorado to mine its wealth, cultivate its soil, build its factories, and fish in its trout-filled steams. At one end of its history are the stone houses of the Cliff Dwellers; at the other, the busy airports serving the continent. This Guide takes account of the nostalgic past and the tumultuous present. It tells how to get there, by plane, bus, train and motor car, and what roads to follow to the teeming cities, the peaks, gorges and canyons, the campgrounds and ghost towns. It describes the great changes of the last twenty-five years, during which engineering has built dams and reservoirs for irrigation, electric power and flood control; scientific mining has uncovered minerals of which the goldseekers never dreamed. It tells about the mechanization of farms and the growth of the sugar beet industry; the expansion of feed lots for cattle and the forty-odd rodeos at which the cowhands let off steam. In other words--Colorado.

Book 1001 Colorado Place Names

Download or read book 1001 Colorado Place Names written by Maxine Benson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it came to labeling cities, towns, counties, crossroads, mining camps, rivers, forests, peaks, and passes, Colorado place namers looked to an array of sources for ideas. Many simply memorialized themselves and their families—Florence, Howard, Lulu City, Dacono (Daisy, Cora, and Nora combined)—or more well-known honorees—Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Kit Carson, Montezuma, Ouray. Some paid homage to explorers, war heroes, politicians, railroad executives, plants, animals, or landforms. Still others went for the more unusual or creative—Boreas Pass bears the name of the Greek god of the North Wind; Egnar is range backwards; Kim was inspired by the Rudyard Kipling novel; Artesia was renamed Dinosaur in 1965 to capitalize on tourist traffic headed to nearby Dinosaur National Monument; Almont was named for a horse, Gulnare a cow. In 1001 Colorado Place Names, Maxine Benson scrutinizes the most popular, interesting , and unique place names in the state. She discusses how the chosen names originated and what changes they have undergone. Included are Colorado's 63 counties, 716 past and present settlements, and 56 "fourteeners" (peaks more than 14,000 feet in elevation) along with other places known for their historical, geographical, geological, or onomastic significance. Benson also provides pronunciation of unusual names, county locations, post office dates, population figures, and anecdotes galore. The result is a mosaic of information of Colorado history, ethnicity, families, events, politics, settlement patterns, and local lore. Combining previous place-name research and new findings, Benson takes us on a colorful, entertaining, and educational journey through cities and towns, across the plains, and over the mountains.
