Download or read book The Bofors Gun written by Terry Gander and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 40mm Bofors Gun, first produced in the 1930s, has become one of the most famous artillery pieces of all time. It shows no sign of fading from the defence scene even though, in the second decade of the twenty-first century, it performs in many roles that were not contemplated by its original designers. It has also proved to be so versatile that it is now allied to electronic and other technological marvels that were mere pipe dreams only a few years ago. When the Bofors entered the international defence market, its primary quarry, the military aircraft, was still a slow and fragile machine that could be terminally damaged by a single hit from a 40mm projectile. Terry Gander describes this early period in the gun's development and he shows how, despite recent?increases in target speed and other performance parameters, it can still inflict a one-hit kill on almost any aircraft, helicopter?or guided missile. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the story is that the fundamentals of today's Bofors guns remain virtually unchanged from the very first examples to come off the Karlskoga production line in Sweden. In all its forms, the Bofors continues to be a sound, reliable and lethal piece of military hardware that has given good service to gunners all over the world.?Terry Gander's comprehensive account of the history of this remarkable weapon over the course of almost eighty years is fascinating?reading and an invaluable work of reference for military historians and artillery specialists alike. It is the definitive work in the field.??As featured on BBC Radio Guernsey.

This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ships from Field’s Point by C. Roger Wallin, Commander, US Navy Reserve, retired The Ships from Field’s Point commemorates an episode of local and regional history that occurred during World War II. At that time, an emergency shipyard was established at a waterfront neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. The yard at Field’s Point employed as many as 21,000 workers, and it built three types of ocean-going ships to support the war effort. Since the end of the war, there have been occasional articles in local newspapers that recalled the past existence of the shipyard, but there never has been an adequate description of the sixty-four ships that were produced there. Author C. Roger Wallin has focused his attention on those ships. This book describes the three types of ships and explains how they were armed and equipped to perform their assigned missions. It also addresses the wartime operational history of the ships, and continues with their use during the post war years. Finally, an appendix is included that indicates the significant milestone dates and the ultimate disposition of each of the 64 vessels.

Download or read book Panzer Destroyer written by Vasiliy Krysov and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this military memoir, a Soviet Red Army officer recounts his experience fighting against Nazi Germany along the Eastern Front in World War II. The day after Vasiliy Krysov finished school, on June 22, 1941, Germany attacked the Soviet Union and provoked a war of unparalleled extent and cruelty. For the next three years, as a tank commander, Krysov fought against the German panzers in some of the most intense and destructive armored engagements in history, including those at Stalingrad, Kursk, and Knigsberg. This is the remarkable story of his war. As the commander of a heavy tank, a self-propelled gun—a tank destroyer—and a T-34, he fought his way westward across Russia, the Ukraine, and Poland against a skillful and determined enemy that had previously never known defeat. Krysov repeatedly faced tough SS panzer divisions, like the SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler Panzer Division in the Bruilov-Fastov area in 1943, and the SS Das Wiking Panzer Division in Poland in 1944. Krysov was at Kursk and participated in a counterattack at Ponyri. The ruthlessness of this long and bitter campaign is vividly depicted in his narrative, as is the enormous scale and complexity of the fighting. Honestly, and with an extraordinary clarity of recall, he describes confrontations with German Tiger and Panther tanks and deadly anti-tank guns. He was wounded four times, his crewmen and his commanding officers were killed, but he was fated to survive and record his experience of combat. His memoirs give a compelling insight into the reality of tank warfare on the Eastern Front.
