Book excerpt: Gumwood Tales: The Trouble With Swill once again tells the sorry tale of the sly foxes led by Festus, who scheme with the ferrets to trap and force animals from the town of Muchadoo to work in their gold mine. There are a lot of twists and turns in this continuing story, revealing lies, deceit, revenge, stealing, and other bad things that some animals do. But there are also nice things that friends do for each other. Sadly, friends can also be unkind, as young readers will discover in the latest Gumwood Tales, where all these things come into play. Meet a brave pig, wombat, rabbit, platypus, possum, turkey, cat, and horse as they fight together to survive. Says the author, "By the end of the story, you will know and love, or not like, the characters as much as I do; and in future stories you can look forward to even more wild yarns of the wonderful animals in the land of Gumwood in a hidden part of Australia."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first of the Gumwood tales takes place around the village of Muchadoo in the land of Gumwood. The villagers have just heard that their mayor’s precious ceremonial regalia has been stolen. Who could have taken it? The friends platypus, brush turkey, and possum are falsely accused of the dastardly theft, following a failed attempt to persuade sergeant bulldog to rescue a rabbit from two nasty foxes that ambushed the rabbit and put him in a sugar bag. The king of the foxes has also trapped an unsuspecting goose and put her in a bag. A more subtle enticement is carried out by a cat who wrongly thinks she’s in league with the foxes. She leads a brush turkey into a trap, only to find she’s also caged and ready to be cooked on a bonfire! It turns out the animals were trapped to furnish food for the grand foxes’ yearly feast. Police dogs and the sergeant bulldog go on a wild chase after the friends. Meanwhile, at the great fox feast, the village animals attack the foxes, scattering them into the forest, but the foxes gather together, and while the villagers are looking for them in the forest, the foxes make their way to the village, where they wreak havoc. They light another bonfire, and commence smashing, stealing, eating, and drinking until the villagers return and another fight begins. Where will this all lead? Good triumphs over evil in the end, but there are casualties and one mystery that remains for the next book in the series.

Book American Gothic Tales

Download or read book American Gothic Tales written by Various and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable anthology of gothic fiction, spanning two centuries of American writing, gives us an intriguing and entertaining look at how the gothic imagination makes for great literature in the works of forty-six exceptional writers. Joyce Carol Oates has a special perspective on the “gothic” in American short fiction, at least partially because her own horror yarns rank on the spine-tingling chart with the masters. She is able to see the unbroken link of the macabre that ties Edgar Allan Poe to Anne Rice and to recognize the dark psychological bonds between Henry James and Stephen King. In showing us the gothic vision—a world askew where mankind’s forbidden impulses are set free from the repressions of the psyche, and nature turns malevolent and lawless—Joyce Carol Oates includes Henry James’s “The Romance of Certain Old Clothes,” Herman Melville’s horrific tale of factory women, “The Tartarus of Maids,” and Edith Wharton’s “Afterward,” which are rarely collected and appear together here for the first time. Added to these stories of the past are new ones that explore the wounded worlds of Stephen King, Anne Rice, Peter Straub, Raymond Carver, and more than twenty other wonderful contemporary writers. This impressive collection reveals the astonishing scope of the gothic writer’s subject matter, style, and incomparable genius for manipulating our emotions and penetrating our dreams. With Joyce Carol Oates’s superb introduction, American Gothic Tales is destined to become the standard one-volume edition of the genre that American writers, if they didn’t create it outright, have brought to its chilling zenith.

Book Brewtown Tales

Book excerpt: John Gurda’s South Side Milwaukee family loved potluck dinners. “From the Jell-O salads at the start of the line through the hot dishes in the middle and on to the pumpkin bars at the end, the food was always hearty, abundant, and certifiably homemade,” he writes. Drawing from Gurda’s long-running Sunday Milwaukee Journal Sentinel column, Brewtown Tales was prepared in the spirit of those fondly remembered meals. The main dish is Milwaukee history, served in a multitude of ways. You will find in these pages the biography of a bridge, a requiem for a union, tales of two shipwrecks, a frank take on segregation, and memories of the summer of ’68, among many other things. There are also side dishes that convey the distinctive flavors of Wisconsin and a few more exotic places, from Vilas County to Vietnam. Steeped in the fantasy of fairy tales, mythologies and folklore alike, is the true reality of all that is. Contrary to what we have been told, life is not summarised in totality by the explainable calculations of the scientific age. Mystical creatures and magical beasts: they all exist! Forced into exile by human religious elites, mystics have been living in the shadows of our reality for centuries. For those who can morph, they live amongst us incognito. For the mystics who cannot morph, they live in bitter exile. Terrorist factions amongst the social castaways have formed and now they seek to emerge from the shadows and reclaim the life they once knew. It is up to one mystic to quell these uprisings. Perched atop her steeple, she knows this city is far from holy, but she’s damn well determined to maintain the sanctity of the status quo.
