Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine you are on vacation and you're sitting at a high-top table with your significant other in an open air bar in a quaint little town looking across a bay with sailboats bobbing in the water and you're thinking to yourself, "I could live here". You check out the locals who are tanned, lean and good looking and they're laughing about something. And, you think to yourself, "Yeah, I could find a job here and rent a small cottage close to the water and I wouldn't have to put up with (insert here your latest irritant like snow, rude people, whatever)". Fifteen minutes later as you look around, you begin to wonder, "How long has this place been here? I wonder what was here before." And that, dear reader is what this book is about. The town is Gulfport, FL a tourist destination that people are moving to; just to get away from "whatever". And, to answer your question, the first settlers came in 1867, two years after the Civil War ended. Our story chronicles a family of five who moved to a frontier town named Disston City on the Gulf coast of Florida to start a new life. It was 1869 and there were no roads to travel to distant settlements, no telegraph, only occasional mail delivery, and an inhospitable environment. How they coped, survived and eventually prospered and grew is our story. While fish were abundant in Boca Ciega Bay, the ground was void of nutrients and a difficult medium in which to grow crops. The land was flat and covered with pine trees, scrub palms and the occasional oak tree. Their closest neighbors were rattle snakes, alligators, coyotes, and wild hogs; mosquitoes being their biggest and most persistent enemy. Scrub cattle, left by British and Spanish colonists 300 years before, now ran wild, and were well adapted to the environment. Local farmers, called "crackers" often rounded them up and either butchered or sold them. In the spring, when cows gave birth to nursing calves, they could get free milk, it they could get the mother to hold still long enough. Everyone fished, if just for survival. Some took large catches to Tampa to sell; but there was no refrigeration and Tampa was a long way away and the only way to get there was by sailboat. The settlers had to clear their land; chopping down trees and then digging out the roots before planting a small garden. They built their house from the local timber. They learned to build small boats and to weave fishing nets out of string. And they had lives, much like we do today. Young people had fun, fell in love, and got married. Women gave birth when there were no local doctors. Some of the children went to school and they all had chores to tend to. Of course, there were hurricanes and droughts and people died from minor wounds if they weren't taken care of. Others died from rampant diseases like yellow fever. When we hear the word "frontier" we think of the Wild West and the people who settled there. Well, Florida was no less wild. They had three wars with the Seminole Indians in the mid-1800s. There were no roads and the railroad was just beginning to make inroads into the area. If you needed a new pair of shoes or a new handle for your shovel the choices were to make it yourself or sail to Tampa to buy it. It was good and it was bad. For sure, it is interesting to see how they did it.

Book excerpt: In todays Florida of strip malls and mega attractions, there is little perception of the state as part of the American frontier, but the hardy folks who settled Gulfport were truly pioneers. Moving away from lives disturbed or destroyed by the Civil War and its aftermath, these early families made homes on an isolated bluff surrounded by tidal flats and bayous, filled with virgin pine and palmetto scrub. From these modest beginnings, a small but thriving fishing village emerged. As the years passed and the Florida boom took hold, Gulfport began to know a new kind of prosperity: tourism. Fancy hotels, shops, and restaurants were built and entertained a steady flow of visitors. A popular winter destination for wealthy Northerners following the Depression era, Gulfport became an interesting study in contrasts. Vacationing gentlemen fished on piers alongside the rugged local seamen; well-dressed tourists played bridge on manicured lawns across the street from rowdy taverns. The middle of the century saw rapid residential expansion as returning servicemen needed homes for their young families and retirees flocked to the area for its mild climate and economical living.
