This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on our completed study, we found that none of the data sources providing information on the health of Gulf War veterans can be used to reliably estimate the incidence of tumors or other illnesses. Existing government data systems are generally limited by poor coverage of the Gulf War veteran population and problems of accuracy and completeness. As a result, it is not known how many Gulf War veterans have tumors or whether they have a higher incidence of them than other veterans. DOD and VA have begun efforts to improve these data systems but have not developed the capability to effectively link information from different sources to assess tumors or other illnesses among Gulf War veterans. DOD and VA also recently funded a few research studies that should provide additional information on tumor cases in the future. However, these studies are not the product of a systematic effort to study the incidence of tumors, and limitations to the studies will prevent them from providing reliable and valid estimates of Gulf War veterans' tumors.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous claims of illnesses from Gulf War veterans and inconsistent reports on veterans' exposure to risk factors have prompted a number of government studies on the nature, extent, and treatment of Gulf War illnesses. In June of last year, we reported to you and other members of Congress that government research efforts may not be able to provide conclusive answers about the causes of veterans' illnesses and that several risk factors such as chemical and biological agents had been ruled out prematurely as possible explanations for the reported illnesses. We also reported that many veterans were unhappy with the quality of health care treatments they had received from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and that enhanced monitoring is needed to determine if veterans are getting any better or worse over time.

This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2015, the Institute of Medicine conducted a study to determine the incidence and prevalence, as well as the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurologic diseases as a result of service in the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf and post 9/11 Global Operations theaters. The other neurologic diseases to be considered include: Parkinson's disease, and brain cancers, as well as central nervous system abnormalities that are difficult to precisely diagnose. This report presents the committee's data collection and findings.

Book Health Consequences of Service During the Persian Gulf War

Download or read book Health Consequences of Service During the Persian Gulf War written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-12-30 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This initial volume in an ongoing study of the potential health consequences of service during the Persian Gulf War responds to a request from Congress to determine whether actions taken to evaluate health effects have been appropriate. It reflects the committee's examination of health outcomes and related research efforts, women's health and reproductive health issues, infrastructure and procedures for data collection, health services influences, the role of psychiatric diagnosis, and a review of the activities of boards and coordinating groups, as well as how issues stemming from involvement in the Persian Gulf might be relevant for possible future conflicts. While the committee continues its full-length study of the problem, the recommendations in this volume are for actions it feels should be taken immediately.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many individuals, groups, and federal agencies have a strong interest in finding answers to the numerous and complex questions regarding the health of Gulf War veterans. Various types of research and health measurement are needed to address these diverse issues. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was asked by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to undertake a study to identify important questions concerning the health of Gulf War veterans and then to design a study to answer those questions. The committee determined that it is of fundamental importance to ask how healthy are Gulf War veterans? Are they as healthy as others? What characteristics are associated with differences between the health of Gulf War veterans and the health of others? To address these questions, it will be necessary to measure not only the health status of those who served in the Gulf War, but also to compare Gulf War veterans with other groups. Further, one must continue to follow these groups through time to determine whether the groups differ in the way their health status is changing. As the committee began to develop a design that would address the fundamental questions identified, it realized that such a study could have important implications for understanding not only the health of Gulf War veterans, but also the health of veterans of other conflicts.

Book Epidemiologic Studies of Veterans Exposed to Depleted Uranium

Download or read book Epidemiologic Studies of Veterans Exposed to Depleted Uranium written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depleted uranium, a component of some weapons systems, has been in use by the U.S. military since the 1991 Gulf War. Military personnel have been exposed to depleted uranium as the result of friendly fire incidents, cleanup and salvage operations, and proximity to burning depleted uranium-containing tanks and ammunition. Under a Congressional mandate, the Department of Defense sought guidance from the Institute of Medicine in evaluating the feasibility and design of an epidemiologic study that would assess health outcomes of exposure to depleted uranium. The study committee examined several options to study health outcomes of depleted uranium exposure in military and veteran populations and concluded that it would be difficult to design a study to comprehensively assess depleted uranium-related health outcomes with currently available data. The committee further concluded that the option most likely to obtain useful information about depleted uranium-related health outcomes would be a prospective cohort study if future military operations involve exposure to depleted uranium. The book contains recommendations aimed at improving future epidemiologic studies and identifying current active-duty military personnel and veterans with potential DU exposure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after the end of the Gulf War, questions continue to be raised about the health of U.S. service personnel who fought in that war. A primary concern is whether Gulf War veterans are receiving effective treatments for their health problems. Section 105 of the Veterans Program Enhancement Act of 1998 mandates that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) ask the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to convene a committee that would identify a method for assessing treatment effectiveness and describe already-validated treatments for Gulf War veterans' health problems, including the problem of medically unexplained symptoms. The specific charge to the committee is to (1) identify and describe approaches for assessing treatment effectiveness; (2) identify illnesses and conditions among veterans of the Gulf War, using data obtained from the VA and the Department of Defense (DoD) Gulf War Registries, as well as information in published articles; and (3) for these identified conditions and illnesses, identify validated models of treatment (to the extent that such treatments exist), or identify new approaches, theories, or research on the management of patients with these conditions if validated treatment models are not available.

The committee specifically evaluated the literature on hydrogen sulfide, combustion products, hydrazine and red fuming nitric acid. Both the epidemiologic and toxicologic literature were reviewed.
