Book Guilty of Dancing the Chachach

Download or read book Guilty of Dancing the Chachach written by Guillermo Cabrera Infante and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like the rhythm of the chachacha, the three short stories in this collection are marked by repetition and contrast. They all begin with the same scene: on a rainy afternoon, a man and woman are having lunch in a restaurant in the center of Havana. Each time, however, this scene is the genesis of a different love story, each corresponding to the vision of three distinct islands: the island of African rites and sacred tambours; the island of luxury hotels and American tourists; and finally, an island of communist utopia and political persecution. In this humorous, ironic and touching work, Cabrera Infante invites the reader on a journey through time, and a quest to discover the many faces of his beloved Cuba."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Popular Music and Politics of the Balkans written by Catherine Baker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Popular Music and Politics of the Balkans is a comprehensive overview of major topics, established debates and new directions in the study of popular music and politics in this region. The vibrant growth of this subject area since the 1990s has been intertwined with the region’s political and socio-economic transformations, including the collapse of state socialism in much of the region, the break-up of Yugoslavia, the advent of neoliberal capitalism, the rise of Romani activism, the complex politics of ‘Europeanization’ before and after the global financial crisis, and the region’s relationship to the European Union border regime. The handbook illustrates the wide range of disciplines and methods that contribute to this field’s interdisciplinary dialogue and highlights emerging approaches such as the study of Black diasporas in the region, popular music’s links with LGBTQ+ communities, and the impact of digital technologies on musical cultures. This volume will benefit specialist researchers, tutors creating or refreshing courses on popular music in the region, and students interested in these topics, especially those who are at the point of developing their own independent research projects.

Book Scarlett O Hara Can Go to Hell

Download or read book Scarlett O Hara Can Go to Hell written by Miriam Center and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precisely as its title so unapologetically indicates, Scarlett O'Hara Can Go to Hell is not a Sunday stroll through myths of southern ladies waiting for heroic southern men to fill their lives with romance and adventure. If anything, it's the exact opposite mesmerizing tale of one woman's determination to re-write southern society's definition of what her life should or can be. Jewish by birth but free-spirited by temperament, the novel's heroine, Naomi Kramer, declares her independence from tradition only to discover that freedom comes with as many challenges and demands as it does rewards and privileges. From her immigrant grandfather's arrival in the United States in 1904 to Naomi's powerful spiritual awakening in the 1980s, readers are treated to a journey through the unfoldment of one unforgettable woman's life while simultaneously bearing witness to what history would come to call the American Century. In turns comically irreverent and soulfully inspiring, Scarlett O'Hara Can Go to Hell is one exceptionally enjoyable read.

Book Selected Episodes Relating to the Life of Vladimir Daniilovich Myukis Deceased

Download or read book Selected Episodes Relating to the Life of Vladimir Daniilovich Myukis Deceased written by Daniel Marcus and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a satirical/historical novel of the life of a fictional Soviet era artist, Vladimir Daniilovich Myukis who was orphaned during the Second World War. By the early 1950s, Myukis now in a street gang of war orphans was arrested by the police for vandalism. The vandalism consisted of drawing large pictures of elephants on the bombed out buildings in hisw native city of Novogrudok in what is now Belarus. The arresting officers realized that Myukis had real art ability so they sent him to art school. From there he was recruited into the KGB where he forged signatures for their agents. He also created art for the Promotional Division of Art Department of GAZ Volga, a huge auto factory that assembled Volga automobiles in the city of Gorkii, now renamed Nizhni Novgorod. Several years later, Myukis was kicked out of Art Department of the Promotional Division and sent to the secret KGB facility located within the factory where he did pretty much the same thing as before but now for the Minister of Propaganda. From there he was let go when that secret KGB facility closed. Myukis, referred to as Volodya in the book, (the nickname for Vladimir), then found employment in the Leningrad GUM department store and remained there until his retirement. Shortly thereafter, the Soviet Union collapsed as did the Russian pension system. The loss of his pension resulted in Myukis immigrating to the United States where he eventually found work as the counter man at a delicatessen on the Coney Island boardwalk. In this book, Myukis encounters various characters both in the USSR and the USA. His closest confident in the US was a former KGB translator named Arcady S. Nyekrassov (Archie) who also worked in Gorkii. There are other numerous characters who were people he encountered in the USSR and later in the United States. The format of the narrative is non-linear. The novel opens with Myukis living in Brooklyn, New York and then goes back in time to his early days within the GAZ Volga/KGB. From there the narrative progresses back to the day after the opening chapter. The satire in the book is of various artists and institutions within the USSR and the US. The book has about 25 illustrations in it. I did all the art work except for the reproduction of Joshua Reynolds self portrait, a 1920s Soviet era political poster, and an illustration done by my wife, Cathy A. Morris. There is also some Russian in Cyrillic script which I have translated, often in a foot note.

Book Defending Their Own in the Cold

Download or read book Defending Their Own in the Cold written by Marc Zimmerman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defending Their Own in the Cold: The Cultural Turns of U.S. Puerto Ricans explores U.S. Puerto Rican culture in past and recent contexts. The book presents East Coast, Midwest, and Chicago cultural production while exploring Puerto Rican musical, film, artistic, and literary performance. Working within the theoretical frame of cultural, postcolonial, and diasporic studies, Marc Zimmerman relates the experience of Puerto Ricans to that of Chicanos and Cuban Americans, showing how even supposedly mainstream U.S. Puerto Ricans participate in a performative culture that embodies elements of possible cultural "Ricanstruction." Defending Their Own in the Cold examines various dimensions of U.S. Puerto Rican artistic life, including relations with other ethnic groups and resistance to colonialism and cultural assimilation. To illustrate how Puerto Ricans have survived and created new identities and relations out of their colonized and diasporic circumstances, Zimmerman looks at the cultural examples of Latino entertainment stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Benicio del Toro, visual artists Juan Sánchez, Ramón Flores, and Elizam Escobar, as well as Nuyorican dancer turned Midwest poet Carmen Pursifull. The book includes a comprehensive chapter on the development of U.S. Puerto Rican literature and a pioneering essay on Chicago Puerto Rican writing. A final essay considers Cuban cultural attitudes towards Puerto Ricans in a testimonial narrative by Miguel Barnet and reaches conclusions about the past and future of U.S. Puerto Rican culture. Zimmerman offers his own "semi-outsider" point of reference as a Jewish American Latin Americanist who grew up near New York City, matured in California, went on to work with and teach Latinos in the Midwest, and eventually married a woman from a Puerto Rican family with island and U.S. roots.
