Book Guiding of High Intensity Ultrashort Laser Pulses in Plasma Channels Produced with the Dual Laser Pulse Ignitor heater Technique

Download or read book Guiding of High Intensity Ultrashort Laser Pulses in Plasma Channels Produced with the Dual Laser Pulse Ignitor heater Technique written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present results of experimental investigations of laser guiding in plasma channels. A new technique for plasma channel creation, the Ignitor-Heater scheme is proposed and experimentally tested in hydrogen and nitrogen. It makes use of two laser pulses. The Ignitor, an ultrashort (100 fs) laser pulse, is brought to a line focus using a cylindrical lens to ionize the gas. The Heater pulse (160 ps long) is used subsequently to heat the existing spark via inverse Bremsstrahlung. The hydrodynamic shock expansion creates a partially evacuated plasma channel with a density minimum on axis. Such a channel has properties of an optical waveguide. This technique allows creation of plasma channels in low atomic number gases, such as hydrogen, which is of importance for guiding of highly intense laser pulses. The channel density was diagnosed with time resolved longitudinal interferometry. From these measurements the plasma temperature was inferred. The guiding properties of the channels were tested by injecting a 5 x 1017 W/cm2, 75 fs laser pulse.

Book Laser Plasma Interaction with Ultra Short Laser Pulses

Download or read book Laser Plasma Interaction with Ultra Short Laser Pulses written by Ralph Jung and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, the invention of the Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) technique made it possible to amplify ultra-short laser pulses to high intensities. Nowadays, laser pulses containing only few optical cycles can be amplified to several tens of gigawatt on a daily basis, using compact table top systems, and lasers that even produce pulses of petawatt power are available at international laboratories. This book comprises the specification and description of two experiments which were carried out to research the interaction of high intensity, ultra-short laser pulses with matter. In the first experiment, the ionization front and the plasma channel generated by laser pulses of sub-10-fs duration and gigawatt power were studied using optical shadowgraphy and interferometry. During this experiment the propagation of the front and the evolution of the channel were resolved optically with sub-10-fs time resolution for the first time. The second experiment, which was carried out at the VULCAN Petawatt laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK), included the research of the propagation and filamentation of a laser-produced electron beam through an over-dense plasma. The structure of the beam was observed by imaging the optical transition radiation produced by the MeV electrons.

Book Guiding of High Intensity Laser Pulses in Straight and Curved Plasma Channel Experiments

Download or read book Guiding of High Intensity Laser Pulses in Straight and Curved Plasma Channel Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental demonstration of optical guiding of a high intensity (> 10(exp 16) W/cu cm laser pulse in a 1 cm long cylindrical plasma channel formed by a slow capillary discharge is presented. Optical guiding in a curved plasma (radius of curvature = 10 cm) is demonstrated for the first time. It is shown experimentally that the (^ 10(exp 8) - 10(exp 16) W/cu cm). Experimental results, showing guiding over approximately 11 vacuum diffraction lengths, in both straight and curved channels, are in agreement with theoretical and numerical calculations.

Book Ultra Intense Laser Pulse Propagation in Gas and Plasma

Download or read book Ultra Intense Laser Pulse Propagation in Gas and Plasma written by T. M. Antonsen and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is proposed here to continue their program in the development of theories and models capable of describing the varied phenomena expected to influence the propagation of ultra-intense, ultra-short laser pulses with particular emphasis on guided propagation. This program builds upon expertise already developed over the years through collaborations with the NSF funded experimental effort lead by Professor Howard Milchberg here at Maryland, and in addition the research group at the Ecole Polytechnique in France. As in the past, close coupling between theory and experiment will continue. The main effort of the proposed research will center on the development of computational models and analytic theories of intense laser pulse propagation and guiding structures. In particular, they will use their simulation code WAKE to study propagation in plasma channels, in dielectric capillaries and in gases where self focusing is important. At present this code simulates the two-dimensional propagation (radial coordinate, axial coordinate and time) of short pulses in gas/plasma media. The plasma is treated either as an ensemble of particles which respond to the ponderomotive force of the laser and the self consistent electric and magnetic fields created in the wake of pulse or as a fluid. the plasma particle motion is treated kinetically and relativistically allowing for study of intense pulses that result in complete cavitation of the plasma. The gas is treated as a nonlinear medium with rate equations describing the various stages of ionization. A number of important physics issues will be addressed during the program. These include (1) studies of propagation in plasma channels, (2) investigation of plasma channel nonuniformities caused by parametric excitation of channel modes, (3) propagation in dielectric capillaries including harmonic generation and ionization scattering, (4) self guided propagation in gas, (5) studies of the ionization scattering instability recently identified theoretically and experimentally in the group, and (6) studies of propagation in cluster plasmas. New models will be developed for the harmonic generation of radiation and these will be incorporated in the modeling and simulation.

Book Elimination of Laser Prepulse by Relativistic Guiding in a Plasma

Download or read book Elimination of Laser Prepulse by Relativistic Guiding in a Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is proposed for eliminating prepulses associated with high power, ultrashort laser pulses. In this method the high power portion of the pulse is refractively guided due to relativistic effects associated with the plasma electrons. The low power prepulse, however, is unaffected by the plasma and diffracts away. Optical guiding is achieved by appropriately choosing the plasma density, laser power and wavelength. In addition, a wavebreaking stabilization mechanism for the Raman backscattering instability for intense laser pulses is proposed. This stabilization mechanism indicates that the intense laser pulse should not be significantly backscattered by the plasma. (jhd).

Book Ultrashort Laser Pulses and Applications

Download or read book Ultrashort Laser Pulses and Applications written by Wolfgang Kaiser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago, Stanley L. Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. Shank added a bibliography (1980-1983) in the second edition with approximately one thousand new references. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written. In particular, the reduction of the time scale of light pulses into the femtosecond range has opened up new experimental possibilities never even foreseen in the preceding literature. The vast literature with countless ideas and applications makes it impossible for a single person to write a comprehensive review. Nine scientists, actively working in the field since its beginning, have decided to join forces to prepare a new book describing the present state of the art. Emphasis is placed on the generation and numerous applications of ultrashort laser pulses. This book covers a wide area of science: physics, engineering, chemistry, and biology. The various chapters and sections are prepared in each case such that the reader is given a brief introduction to the specific subject. Ample references for a more detailed study are given at the end of each chapter.

Book Plasma Channel Formation and Guiding During High Intensity Short Pulse Laser Plasma Experiments

Download or read book Plasma Channel Formation and Guiding During High Intensity Short Pulse Laser Plasma Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plasma waveguide is formed during the interaction of a high power (2TW) subpicosecond pump laser pulse with a hydrogen (or helium) gas jet target. The channel is produced from displacement (or cavitation) of plasma electrons by the large ponderomotive force of the focused pump laser and the subsequent radial expulsion of plasma ions due to charge separation. Using Thomson scattering diagnostics and mode structure measurements, a trailing probe laser pulse is observed to be guided throughout the length of this channel for about 20 Rayleigh lengths - approximately equal to the propagation length of the self-guided pump laser pulse.
