Book A Story of Impact

Download or read book A Story of Impact written by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic organic compounds once used in a variety of products ranging from transformers to oil based paints and plastics. Exposure to PCBs has shown multiple adverse health effects. Due to high toxicity and harmful environmental effects, Congress banned the production of PCBs in 1978. Despite the ban, occupational exposures to this toxic compound still occur regularly. This includes when working with older products, buildings, equipment, and materials that were created with or used PCBs and still have the compound embedded in them. Research funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and conducted within the Education and Research Center at the Harvard School of Public Health, focused primarily on the blood PCB levels of construction workers who renovate schools built before 1978 in the eastern United States. Many buildings constructed prior to 1978 have PCBs in the paint and the caulking material used to seal joints, especially around windows and pipes. As aging schools are renovated, construction workers are disrupting, breaking, or grinding areas where PCBs are located. Dust containing PCBs can be released into the air during these activities contaminating the building and surrounding area, which puts not only construction workers at risk of respiratory exposure but also schoolchildren, teachers, and other workers. Research has shown levels of PCBs reaching as high as 81 parts per million (ppm) in the dust inside ventilation systems; however, the limit for bulk materials such as caulk and dust set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is much lower at 50 ppm. Further, related studies have found an increase in PCB plasma [plasma] levels for both teachers and construction workers." - NIOSHTIC-2

Book Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Download or read book Polychlorinated Biphenyls written by Obaid Faroon and published by WHO. This book was released on 2003 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds, produced commercially since 1929 for use in a variety of products including plastics and adhesives, surface coatings, inks, flame retardants, pesticides and paints. PCBs are environmentally persistent, and accumulate in the food chain. They are designated by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants as persistent pollutants, and many countries have severely restricted or banned the production of PCBs. This report evaluates the effects of PCBs on human health, caused due to exposure by inhaling contaminated air or ingesting contaminated food and water.

Book Prudent Practices in the Laboratory

Download or read book Prudent Practices in the Laboratory written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "America's Children and the Environment (ACE)" is EPA's report presenting data on children's environmental health. ACE brings together information from a variety of sources to provide national indicators in the following areas: Environments and Contaminants, Biomonitoring, and Health. Environments and Contaminants indicators describe conditions in the environment, such as levels of air pollution. Biomonitoring indicators include contaminants measured in the bodies of children and women of child-bearing age, such as children's blood lead levels. Health indicators report the rates at which selected health outcomes occur among U.S. children, such as the annual percentage of children who currently have asthma. Accompanying each indicator is text discussing the relevance of the issue to children's environmental health and describing the data used in preparing the indicator. Wherever possible, the indicators are based on data sources that are updated in a consistent manner, so that indicator values may be compared over time.

Book Waste Incineration and Public Health

Download or read book Waste Incineration and Public Health written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-10-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incineration has been used widely for waste disposal, including household, hazardous, and medical wasteâ€"but there is increasing public concern over the benefits of combusting the waste versus the health risk from pollutants emitted during combustion. Waste Incineration and Public Health informs the emerging debate with the most up-to-date information available on incineration, pollution, and human healthâ€"along with expert conclusions and recommendations for further research and improvement of such areas as risk communication. The committee provides details on: Processes involved in incineration and how contaminants are released. Environmental dynamics of contaminants and routes of human exposure. Tools and approaches for assessing possible human health effects. Scientific concerns pertinent to future regulatory actions. The book also examines some of the social, psychological, and economic factors that affect the communities where incineration takes place and addresses the problem of uncertainty and variation in predicting the health effects of incineration processes.
