Book Guidelines for the Design of Double Layer Grids

Download or read book Guidelines for the Design of Double Layer Grids written by Daniel A. Cuoco and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on Double-Layer Grids of the Committee on Special Structures of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report provides guidelines for the design of double-layer grids, a type of space frame. Space frames are three-dimensional, lattice-type structures that provide great rigidity and inherent redundancy. Space frames are one of the more efficient uses of structural materials, and they satisfy demand for large column-free areas. The most common example of a space frame is the double-layer grid, which consists of two parallel layers of top and bottom cords interconnected by inclined and/or vertical web members. This report provides an overview of double-layer grids and discusses their structural behavior. Various methods to analyze these structures?including static analysis, dynamic analysis, thermal analysis, and optimization analysis?are explored. This guide concludes with experimental studies involving double-layer grids and implications for design.

Download or read book OPTIMIZATION OF DOUBLE LAYER GRIDS written by Reza Kamyab Moghadas and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization of square-on-square double layer grids is beneficial for design purpose. For this purpose, use of a gradient based optimization algorithm incorporating stochastic feature called static perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) has been investigated in this book. Also, a computational procedure for constrained optimization of square-on-square double layer grids combining FEM, SPSA algorithm and neural network has been formulated. This research study shows that the proposed methodology of combining FEM and SPSA algorithm is effective for the purpose of generation of reliable data to train GR and RBF neural network models for use as a practical tool for the prediction of optimal design and maximum deflection of square-on-square double layer grids. This book is especially useful to researchers in the field of optimization of space structures and neural networks and, also, the designers of double layer grids. It is beneficial for postgraduate students majoring in structural engineering.

Book Meta heuristic Algorithms for Optimal Design of Real Size Structures

Download or read book Meta heuristic Algorithms for Optimal Design of Real Size Structures written by Ali Kaveh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this book discuss large-scale problems like the optimal design of domes, antennas, transmission line towers, barrel vaults and steel frames with different types of limitations such as strength, buckling, displacement and natural frequencies. The authors use a set of definite algorithms for the optimization of all types of structures. They also add a new enhanced version of VPS and information about configuration processes to all chapters. Domes are of special interest to engineers as they enclose a maximum amount of space with a minimum surface and have proven to be very economical in terms of consumption of constructional materials. Antennas and transmission line towers are the one of the most popular structure since these steel lattice towers are inexpensive, strong, light and wind resistant. Architects and engineers choose barrel vaults as viable and often highly suitable forms for covering not only low-cost industrial buildings, warehouses, large-span hangars, indoor sports stadiums, but also large cultural and leisure centers. Steel buildings are preferred in residential as well as commercial buildings due to their high strength and ductility particularly in regions which are prone to earthquakes.

Book Perspectives in Civil Engineering

Download or read book Perspectives in Civil Engineering written by Jeffrey S. Russell and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains 27 papers that serve as a testament to the state-of-the-art of civil engineering at the outset of the 21st century, as well as to commemorate the ASCE's Sesquicentennial. Written by the leading practitioners, educators, and researchers of civil engineering, each of these peer-reviewed papers explores a particular aspect of civil engineering knowledge and practice. Each paper explores the development of a particular civil engineering specialty, including milestones and future barriers, constraints, and opportunities. The papers celebrate the history, heritage, and accomplishments of the profession in all facets of practice, including construction facilities, special structures, engineering mechanics, surveying and mapping, irrigation and water quality, forensics, computing, materials, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, and transportation engineering. While each paper is unique, collectively they provide a snapshot of the profession while offering thoughtful predictions of likely developments in the years to come. Together the papers illuminate the mounting complexity facing civil engineering stemming from rapid growth in scientific knowledge, technological development, and human populations, especially in the last 50 years. An overarching theme is the need for systems-level approaches and consideration from undergraduate education through advanced engineering materials, processes, technologies, and design methods and tools. These papers speak to the need for civil engineers of all specialties to recognize and embrace the growing interconnectedness of the global infrastructure, economy, society, and the need to work for more sustainable, life-cycle-oriented solutions. While embracing the past and the present, the papers collected here clearly have an eye on the future needs of ASCE and the civil engineering profession.
