Book Energy Efficient Community Development in California

Download or read book Energy Efficient Community Development in California written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy joined the California Energy Commission in funding a project to begin to examine the technical, economic and institutional (policy and regulatory) aspects of energy-efficient community development. That research project was known as the Chula Vista Research Project for the host California community that co-sponsored the initiative. The researches proved that the strategic integration of the selected and economically viable buildings energy efficiency (EE) measures, photovoltaics (PV), distributed generation (DG), and district cooling can produce significant reductions in aggregate energy consumption, peak demand and emissions, compared to the developer/builder's proposed baseline approach. However, the central power plant emission reductions achieved through use of the EE-DG option would increase local air emissions. The electric and natural gas utility infrastructure impacts associated with the use of the EE and EE-PV options were deemed relatively insignificant while use of the EE-DG option would result in a significant reduction of necessary electric distribution facilities to serve a large-scale development project. The results of the Chula Vista project are detailed in three separate documents: (1) Energy-Efficient Community Development in California; Chula Vista Research Project report contains a detailed description of the research effort and findings. This includes the methodologies, and tools used and the analysis of the efficiency, economic and emissions impacts of alternative energy technology and community design options for two development sites. Research topics covered included: (a) Energy supply, demand, and control technologies and related strategies for structures; (b) Application of locally available renewable energy resources including solar thermal and PV technology and on-site power generation with heat recovery; (c) Integration of local energy resources into district energy systems and existing energy utility networks; (d) Alternative land-use design and development options and their impact on energy efficiency and urban runoff, emissions and the heat island effect; and (e) Alternative transportation and mobility options and their impact on local emissions. (2) Creating Energy-Efficient Communities in California: A Reference Guide to Barriers, Solutions and Resources report provides the results of an effort to identify the most innovative existing and emerging public policy, incentive and market mechanisms that encourage investment in advanced energy technologies and enabling community design options in the State of California and the nation. The report evaluates each of these mechanisms in light of the preceding research and concludes with a set of recommended mechanisms designed for consideration by relevant California State agencies, development and finance industry associations, and municipal governments. (3) Creating Energy-Efficient Communities in California: A Technical Reference Guide to Building and Site Design report contains a set of selected commercially viable energy technology and community design options for high-efficiency, low-impact community development in California. It includes a summary of the research findings referenced above and recommendations for energy technology applications and energy-efficient development strategies for residential, commercial and institutional structures and supporting municipal infrastructure for planned communities. The document also identifies design options, technology applications and development strategies that are applicable to urban infill projects.

Book Guidelines for Community Energy Planning

Download or read book Guidelines for Community Energy Planning written by Hang Yu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically introduces readers to the operator method, which can be used in different stages of urban planning. Energy planning should ideally be accompanied by urban planning, ranging from comprehensive planning and detailed planning, to the design of individual construction projects. This book discusses a range of methods and models for defining energy planning objectives; analyzing and predicting energy demand; assessing available energy resources; optimizing integrated energy systems; analyzing the cost-effectiveness of proposals; implementation management; and post-assessment. Part one focuses on energy planning in different urban planning stages, while part two provides detailed discussions of key issues related to energy planning.

Book Sustainable Communities Design Handbook

Download or read book Sustainable Communities Design Handbook written by Woodrow W. Clark II and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-03 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of Sustainable Communities Design Handbook is to ensure a better quality of life for everyone, both now and for generations to come. This means creating a better and safer environment internationally through the sustainable use of natural resources, encouraging sustainable development which supports a strong economy, and ensuring a high quality environment that can be enjoyed by all. Sustainable Development Partnerships brings together in one reference today's most cutting edge technologies and methods for creating sustainable communities. With this book, Environmental Engineers, Civil Engineers, Architects, Mechanical Engineers, and Energy Engineers find a common approach to building environmental friendly communities which are energy efficient. The five part treatment starts with a clear and rigorous exposition of sustainable development in practice, followed by self-contained chapters concerning applications. Methods for the sustainable use of natural resources in built communities Clearly explains the most cutting edge sustainable technologies Provides a common approach to building sustainable communities Coverage of sustainable practices from architecture to construction

Book The Intersection of Energy Efficiency and Affordable Housing

Download or read book The Intersection of Energy Efficiency and Affordable Housing written by Rachel Anne Fives and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study researched inclusions and limitations of zoning ordinances for energy efficient, affordable housing in upstate New York. A survey tested the acceptance level of the public toward mandates for affordable housing and energy efficient housing as discrete programs for residential development. Data was collected using interviews of key stakeholders and policy implementers in Tompkins County, New York. The Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research conducted the survey as part of the annual Empire State Poll. There were three hypotheses, the first being that requiring energy efficient, affordable housing is an unpopular concept in New York State. The second hypothesis was that local land use regulations limit affordable, energy efficient development. The third hypothesis was that housing development that is both energy efficient and affordable is not a high priority concept for community planners. The results from the survey reveal that the residents of New York State supports housing development that is affordable and that is energy efficient. Data collected from interviews of planners, lenders and developers in Tompkins County, New York indicate local land use regulations have an impact on residential development in a variety of ways, but that affordable, energy efficient housing is a high priority in the county. This research brings forth possible solutions for changes to zoning ordinances that may encourage developers to build housing units that are affordable to a broad range of socioeconomic levels and meet the needs of a diverse community such as Tompkins County, New York.

Book Case Studies and Guidelines for Energy Efficient Communities

Download or read book Case Studies and Guidelines for Energy Efficient Communities written by Reinhard Jank and published by . This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the barriers that prevent us from achieving our long-term energy goals in cities or, more generally, in our built environment? What can be learned from successful Case Studies in neighborhoods, districts or cities? Is there any economically viable way to apply these advancements to whole cities? This Annex 51 wants to provide such answers, based on the evaluation of over 20 Case Studies carried out within the 11 participating countries and elaborated in the form of this guidebook on successful local energy planning. In eight chapters and several detailed attachments a manual to derive municipal energy master plans for towns or cities on one hand, and local neighborhood energy plans on the other is presented, which serves as a guideline for municipal decision makers, real estate developers and urban planners as well.
