Book excerpt: The U.S. government supports programs to combat global HIV/AIDS through an initiative that is known as the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This initiative was originally authorized in the U.S. Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Act of 2003 and focused on an emergency response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic to deliver lifesaving care and treatment in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with the highest burdens of disease. It was subsequently reauthorized in the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde U.S. Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008 (the Lantos-Hyde Act). Evaluation of PEPFAR makes recommendations for improving the U.S. government's bilateral programs as part of the U.S. response to global HIV/AIDS. The overall aim of this evaluation is a forward-looking approach to track and anticipate the evolution of the U.S. response to global HIV to be positioned to inform the ability of the U.S. government to address key issues under consideration at the time of the report release.

Book Child Protection in the Church

Download or read book Child Protection in the Church written by Michael A. Guerzoni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child Protection in the Church investigates whether, amidst publicised promises of change from church institutions and the introduction of “safe church” policies and procedures, reform is actually occurring within Christian churches towards safeguarding, using a case study of the Anglican Diocese of Tasmania, Australia. Through the use of interviews and document analysis, the book provides an insight into the attitudes and practices of “ordinary clergypersons” towards child sexual abuse and safeguarding to understand how safe ministry is understood and executed in everyday life in the Church, and to what extent it aligns with policy requirements and criminological best practice. It adopts organisational culture theory, the perspective used to explain how clerical culture enabled and concealed child sexual abuse in the Church to the present, in order to understand how clerical attitudes (cognition) and practice (conduct) today is being shaped by some of the same negative cultures. Underlying these cultures is misunderstandings of abuse causation, which are shown here to negatively shape clerical practice and, at times, compromise policy and procedural requirements. Providing an insight into the lived reality of safeguarding within churches, and highlighting the ongoing complexities of safe ministry, the book is a useful companion to students, academics, and practitioners of child protection and organisational studies, alongside clergy, church leaders, and those training for the ministry.

Book Clinical Aspects of Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals

Download or read book Clinical Aspects of Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals written by Dilip Ghosh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last three decades, revolutionary achievements have taken place in nutraceutical and functional food research including the introduction of a number of cutting-edge dietary supplements supported by human clinical trials and strong patents. Novel manufacturing technologies including unique extraction processes, bioavailability improvements through delivery technologies such as nanotechnology, and innovative packaging have been critical steps for their successful positioning in the marketplace and consumer acceptance worldwide. Nonetheless, mixed messages have emerged from both the scientific community and the media concerning the potential benefits of foods and nutrients in the treatment and prevention of disease. This confusion, in addition to existing marketed products making questionable health claims, have led health practitioners and consumers to become skeptical about nutritional claims of new and emerging food products. Clinical Aspects of Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals provides an extensive overview of the clinical aspects of functional foods and nutraceuticals. It contains information on both nutritional challenges and potential health benefits of functional foods and nutraceuticals. In addition to exploring the underpinning science, the book also focuses on food innovation, functional foods in human health, food–drug interactions, functional foods in medicine, the seed-to-clinic approach, global regulatory frameworks, challenges, and future directions. The book provides an essential overview of the clinical aspects surrounding functional foods and nutraceuticals for key stakeholders, drawing links between areas of knowledge that are often isolated from each other. This form of knowledge integration will be essential for practice, especially for policy makers and administrators.
