Download or read book Journalism written by Jo A. Cates and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-05-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalism: A Guide to the Reference Literature is a critically annotated bibliographic guide to print and electronic sources in print and broadcast journalism. The first edition was published in 1990; the second in 1997. It has been described as one of the critical reference sources in journalism today, and it is a key bibliographic guide to the literature. Choice magazine called it a benchmark publication for which there are no comparable sources. The format is similar to the second edition. What makes this edition significantly different is the separation of Commercial Databases and Internet Resources. Commercial Databases includes standard fee-based resources. The new chapter on Internet sources features Web-based resources not included in the commercial databases chapter as well as portals, other online files, listservs, newsgroups, and Web logs/blogs. All chapters have been revised, and there are significant revisions in Directories, Yearbooks, and Collections; Miscellaneous Sources; Core Periodicals; Societies and Associations; and Research Centers and Archives. The second edition has 789 entries. The third edition contains almost 1,000 entries. James Carey of Columbia University, who provided the foreword for the first two editions, has updated his foreword for this edition.

Download or read book The Socialist Party of America written by Jack Ross (Historian) and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the word "socialist" is but one of numerous political epithets that are generally divorced from the historical context of America's political history, The Socialist Party of America presents a new, mature understanding of America's most important minor political party of the twentieth century. From the party's origins in the labor and populist movements at the end of the nineteenth century, to its heyday with the charismatic Eugene V. Debs, and to its persistence through the Depression and the Second World War under the steady leadership of "America's conscience," Norman Thomas, The Socialist Party of America guides readers through the party's twilight, ultimate demise, and the successor groups that arose following its collapse. Based on archival research, Jack Ross's study challenges the orthodoxies of both sides of the historiographical debate as well as assumptions about the Socialist Party in historical memory. Ross similarly covers the related emergence of neoconservatism and other facets of contemporary American politics and assesses some of the more sensational charges from the right about contemporary liberalism and the "radicalism" of Barack Obama.

Download or read book The Dissident Press written by Lauren Kessler and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kessler challenges the idea that the worlds of media and journalism have ever conformed to a 'free marketplace' image. This present volume investigates a handful of the many fringe groups who, denied access to the mainstream, started marketplaces of their own. Journalistic efforts in six groups are explored: Black Americans; utopians and communitarians; feminists; non-English speaking immigrants; populists, anarchists, socialists, communists; and pacifists, non-interventionists, and resisters from World Wars I and II. The result is an impressive study which shows that such groups have a diversity of origins, and a tradition which spans one and a half centuries.
