Book The Bass Trombonist s Guide to the Tuba Repertoire

Download or read book The Bass Trombonist s Guide to the Tuba Repertoire written by Lucas J. Kaspar and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bass trombone’s range is very similar to the tuba. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of solo repertoire composed for the bass trombone. Due to its relatively new development, many composers do not know how to properly write for the instrument. The most common error is composers writing too high for the instrument. Though the bass trombone has the capability of playing the soaring high notes of a tenor trombone, it is much more fatiguing than on a tenor trombone. The range of the tuba suites the bass trombone, as it requires performing mostly in the mid to low register, while occasionally reaching the high register. The aim of this document is to provide a catalog of tuba repertoire that is realistic for bass trombonists. The document is structured in nine major chapters: (1) Introduction, discusses the process of constructing this document, (2) History of the Double-Valve Bass Trombone, (3) Unaccompanied Solos, (4) Solos with Keyboard, (5) Solos with Band or Orchestra, (6) Solos with Electronic Media, (7) Etudes and Method Books, (8) Duets, and (9) Further Research.

Book The Composer s Guide to the Tuba

Download or read book The Composer s Guide to the Tuba written by Aaron Michael Hynds and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solo repertoire of the tuba and euphonium has grown exponentially since the middle of the 20th century, due in large part to the pioneering work of several artist-performers on those instruments. These performers sought out and collaborated directly with composers, helping to produce works that sensibly and musically used the tuba and euphonium. However, not every composer who wishes to write for the tuba and euphonium has access to world-class tubists and euphonists, and the body of available literature concerning the capabilities of the tuba family is both small in number and lacking in comprehensiveness. This document seeks to remedy this situation by producing a comprehensive and accessible guide on the capabilities of the tuba family. An analysis of the currently-available materials concerning the tuba family will give direction on the structure and content of this new guide, as will the dissemination of a survey to the North American composition community. The end result, the Composer's Guide to the Tuba, is a practical, accessible, and composer-centric guide to the modern capabilities of the tuba family of instruments.

Book New Techniques in the Avant garde Repertoire for Solo Tuba

Download or read book New Techniques in the Avant garde Repertoire for Solo Tuba written by David Randolph and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the decade of the 1960s, the solo repertoire for tuba has increased dramatically. The tubist now has available literature ranging from baroque transcriptions to compositions utilizing electronically produced sounds. Since a large segment of the avant-garde literature for tuba has been written for tuba alone, the writer has limited this study to only those compositions utilizing this medium. These compositions make use of many new sounds produced by a wide variety of techniques. They utilize techniques for changing the timbre of a definite pitch sound, techniques for playing more than one pitch simultaneously, and techniques involving indefinite pitches. In this study the writer has endeavored to examine these avant-garde techniques as they apply to nine selected compositions for solo tuba. The nine compositions are: Canto VII for Tuba Solo by Samuel Adler (Boosey and Hawkes, 1974), Six Likes for Solo Tuba by Theodor Antoniou (Barenreiter, 1968), Incon-Sequenza for One Tuba-Player by Matthias Bamert (G. Schirmer, 1973), Three for Barton for Solo Bass Tuba by Allan Blank (Associated Music Publishers, 1974), Patterns III for Solo Tuba by James Fulkerson (Media Press, 1969), Encounters II for Soto Tuba by William Kraft (MCA Music, 1970), Three Essays for Tuba by William Penn (Seesaw Music Corporation, 1973), Midnight Realities for Tuba Unaccompanied by Morgan Powell (Brass Music, Ltd., 1974), and Five Studies for Tuba Atone by David Reck (C.F. Peters Corporation, 196B). The decision to include these compositions was based on the fact that each involves a tubist as the only performer, each is published and readily available, and each involves avant-garde techniques to some degree. The avant-garde techniques included in these compositions have been examined from three perspectives:1. Notation--How does the composer indicate the new sounds he desires? Is it an effective, clear-cut symbol? 2. Method of produotion--How does the tubist produce the sound called for by the composer? 3. Context--How does the technique fit into the composition? It is the hope of the writer that this manuscript will be of value to three varying groups of individuals: 1. The tuba student who is just beginning his study of the avant-garde literature for tuba. 2. The tuba instructor who is not familiar with this segment of the repertoire. 3. The composer who intends to write for tuba in this style and who would like to know what is possible, what is difficult, what works well, and what has been done by other composers. Judgments of a subjective nature regarding the musical merits of the included compositions have been avoided. The criticisms offered have been limited to areas of clarity of notation or performance instructions and effectiveness of the new techniques. In several cases suggestions have been made as to how that effectiveness might be increased. It is the writer's opinion that, though they certainly are not of equal musical quality, each of the compositions included in this dissertation is at least worthy of study by the advanced student or professional tubist.

Book The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble and R Winston Morris

Download or read book The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble and R Winston Morris written by Charles A. McAdams and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble (TTTE) is one of the most successful performing collegiate ensembles in history, with an enviable record of 25 recording projects, seven Carnegie Hall appearances, two World's Fairs performances, numerous national and international conference engagements, and a performance history in venues like Preservation Hall in New Orleans, the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and the Kennedy Center in Washington. The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble and R. Winston Morris: A 40th Anniversary Retrospective lists all of these events and more. It tells how Morris founded an ensemble comprised only of tubas and euphoniums (the "underdogs" of the orchestra) and catapulted it to international recognition, establishing and defining the standards for tuba ensemble performance practices and creating a monumental influence on both the tuba and music education throughout the world. The book provides a biography of Morris that includes the influences that led to the development of the TTTE, and it describes the early years of the ensemble and its development as one of the most recognizable groups of its kind. Several lists of reference information specific to Morris and the group—and general to tuba and euphonium music—are offered. Details about concerts, performances, activities, and recordings of the ensemble are presented, as well as recordings, awards, honors, and publications by Morris. Former members of the group are listed and pictured in more than 85 photos comprising a photographic history. Winston and the TTTE are responsible for the composition and arrangement of more music for the tuba than any other single source, and a comprehensive list of those works is supplied here.
