Download or read book Guide to Immediate Anaesthetic Reactions written by John B. Watkins and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to Immediate Anaesthetic Reactions serves as a practical guide to the management of adverse anesthetic response. This book provides information pertinent to the functions of anesthesia, including hypnosis, analgesia, and neuromuscular control. Organized into six chapters, this book begins with an overview of the immunological principles in anesthesia and surgery. This text then discusses mechanisms of the adverse anesthetic reactions as well as the characteristics of immune response. Other chapters consider the theory and practical management of anaphylactoid reactions, including the requirements for laboratory studies. This book presents as well a practical approach to the understanding, recognition, and management of the life-threatening reactions of anesthesia to patients. The reader is introduced to the general considerations for patients presenting with various genetic abnormalities likely to trigger abnormal response to anesthesia. The final chapter deals with the immediate adverse reactions that are related to defects of enzyme function rather than to immunity. This book is a valuable resource for anesthetists, surgeons, and physicians.

Book The Rand UCLA Appropriateness Method User s Manual

Download or read book The Rand UCLA Appropriateness Method User s Manual written by Kathryn Fitch and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health systems should function in such a way that the amount of inappropriate care is minimized, while at the same time stinting as little as possible on appropriate and necessary care. The ability to determine and identify which care is overused and which is underused is essential to this functioning. To this end, the "RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method" was developed in the 1980s. It has been further developed and refined in North America and, increasingly, in Europe. The rationale behind the method is that randomized clinical trials--the "gold standard" for evidence-based medicine--are generally either not available or cannot provide evidence at a level of detail sufficient to apply to the wide range of patients seen in everyday clinical practice. Although robust scientific evidence about the benefits of many procedures is lacking, physicians must nonetheless make decisions every day about when to use them. Consequently, a method was developed that combined the best available scientific evidence with the collective judgment of experts to yield a statement regarding the appropriateness of performing a procedure at the level of patient-specific symptoms, medical history, and test results. This manual presents step-by-step guidelines for conceptualising, designing, and carrying out a study of the appropriateness of medical or surgical procedures (for either diagnosis or treatment) using the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method. The manual distills the experience of many researchers in North America and Europe and presents current (as of the year 2000) thinking on the subject. Although the manual is self-contained and complete, the authors do not recommend that those unfamiliar with the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method independently conduct an appropriateness study; instead, they suggest "seeing one" before "doing one." To this end, contact information is provided to assist potential users of the method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial hours after surgery are a critical time in the care of the surgical patient. Familiarity with the clinical presentation of perioperative complications is important to achieving optimal outcomes. By taking an approach to complications based upon signs and symptoms seen in the early post-operative period among adult patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery, this book aids the practitioner in the clinical management of surgical patients during the often turbulent hours after surgery. After a brief introduction to PACU organization, this manual discusses the common and most serious symptoms encountered in the post-operative patient, giving guidance on diagnosis of the underlying disorder and the treatment options available. The book also includes chapters dedicated to subspecialty patients, including patients requiring post-operative mechanical ventilation, pediatric patients, patients with implantable cardiac devices, morbidly obese patients and the complex pain patient. This practical manual is essential reading for all practitioners working in the PACU environment.
