Book excerpt: There is today a dramatic reexamination of structure, authority, dogma -- indeed, every aspect of the life of the Church is held up to scrutiny. Welcoming this as a sign of vitality, Avery Dulles has carefully studied the writings of contemporary Protestant and Catholic ecclesiologists and sifted out six major approaches, or "models," through which the Church's character can be understood: as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald, Servant, and, in a recent addition to the book, as Community of Disciples. A balanced theology, he concludes, must incorporate the major affirmations of each. "The method of models or types," observes Cardinal Dulles, "can have great value in helping people to get beyond the limitations of their own particular outlook and to enter into fruitful conversation with others... Such conversation is obviously essential if ecumenism is to get beyond its present impasses." This new edition includes a new Appendix and Preface by the author.

Book Comparative Religious Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Norman Doe
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2018-11-30
  • ISBN : 1316733297
  • Pages : pages

Download or read book Comparative Religious Law written by Norman Doe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Religious Law provides for the first time a study of the regulatory instruments of Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious organisations in Britain in light of their historical religious laws. Norman Doe questions assumptions about the pervasiveness, character and scope of religious laws, from the view that they are not or should not be recognised by civil law, to the idea that there may be a fundamental incompatibility between religious and civil law. It proposes that religious laws pervade society, are recognised by civil law, have both a religious and temporal character, and regulate wide areas of believers' lives. Subjects include sources of law, faith leaders, governance, worship and education, rites of passage, divorce and children, and religion-State relations. A Charter of 'the principles of religious law' common to all three Abrahamic faiths is proposed, to stimulate greater mutual understanding between religion and society and between the three faiths themselves.

Book The Legal Legacy of the Reformation

Download or read book The Legal Legacy of the Reformation written by John Duddington and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing interest in the relationship between religion and law is, in the case of Christianity, often viewed in monolithic terms. Moreover, the debate is often seen in terms of the relationship of Christianity to the state along with discussions about, for example, religious freedom. Christianity is often seen as responding to claims made on it by the state and by the growth of secularism. This book takes a different approach. First, it makes the claim that Christianity has something of value to say about various pressing issues which are of direct relevance to contemporary society. Amongst these are the place of human rights and that of individual claims of conscience. Second, it does not regard Christianity as a monolithic whole but takes as its starting point the sundering of Christendom at the Reformation, which, it claims, led in many cases to divergent patterns of thought between Catholics and Protestants about law and its place in society. However, as this book shows, in many cases, Catholic and Protestant thinking on areas such as natural law is not as divergent as it is often thought. Five hundred years after the Reformation, the work presents a reflection on the roots of Catholic and Protestant thinking on law and its place in society. It will be of interest to canon lawyers as well as academics and students of law and religion.

Book The Legal Guide for Religious Institutions

Download or read book The Legal Guide for Religious Institutions written by David Blaikie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing both a comprehensive legal overview and practical advice, this is an essential reference work for every pastor, church administrator, and parish council member. The US is the most litigious country in the world. The sex abuse scandal has virtually bankrupted the American Roman Catholic Church. The breakup of the American Episcopal Church threatens innumerable lawsuits over ownership of church property. Every religious community in the US has reason to be concerned about its legal liability. Wrongful dismissal, potential liability for the actions of employees or volunteers, a parishioner slipping on icy church steps... these are just some of the other legal issues that should be of concern to every Christian church and parish community in America. Recognizing that most people working in the church need guidance when confronting church-related legal issues, lawyers (and long-term church members) David Blaikie and Diana Ginn have adapted their popular Legal Guide for Canadian Churches for the American religious community. This handy reference book takes readers, step by step, through all the legal implications of the daily operation of a church and parish community. Blaikie and Ginn explain different areas of the law, including administrative law, property law, employment law, and civil liability. This book provides a legal context for understanding and responding to relevant legal issues, while at the same time providing answers and directions on specific legal questions. The Legal Guide for Religious Institutions provides a comprehensive legal overview, coupled with practical advice, that will be required reading for every American pastor, church administrator, and parish council member.
