Book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy

Download or read book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy written by Andre Heck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am most grateful to Andr ́ e Heck for his invitation to write a foreword to OSA Volume 4 – I will use this valued opportunity to emphasise those topics in Vol. 4 which I consider important even if other topics may be of even greater importance in the universal scale of things. At the outset let me say that I commend Vol. 4 to its readers – it contains much of very great interest for organisations and strategies in astronomy. A topic which I consider to be of very great importance at this time is Adverse Environmental Impact on Astronomy. There are two papers on this topic in OSA 4 – Cohen on Strategies for Protecting Radio Ast- nomy and Schwarz on Light Pollution Control. The growth in the extent of use, the power and spectral demand for radio transmission continues to increase virtually exponentially. The impact on the ‘listening’ services such as radio astronomy has been severe. Only by creativity in developing new techniques for radio noise (including legal transmissions) reduction and by participating fully in the allocation process for radio frequencies has radio astronomy developed to the powerful investigative tool it is today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Amateur astronomers who find all the objects on the list in one night have successfully completed the Messier Marathon. The Observing Guide to the Messier Marathon contains over 90 easy-to-use star maps to guide the observer from one object to the next, and provides tips for a successful night of observing. Don Machholz also tells the story of the eighteenth-century astronomer, Charles Messier, and how he came to compile his extensive catalogue. His complete guide to the Messier Marathon will help the amateur astronomer to observe the Messier Objects throughout the year, using a small telescope or even a pair of binoculars. Don Machholz is an engineer in Auburn, California. Interested in astronomy since childhood, he is a renowned comet hunter, having discovered nine comets that bear his name. He writes articles for local California newspapers and radio stations for special astronomical events. Between 1988 and 2000, Don Machholz was the Comets Recorder for the Association of Lunar and Planetary Recorders.

Book Philip s the Urban Astronomy Guide

Download or read book Philip s the Urban Astronomy Guide written by Robin Scagell and published by Philip's. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip's The Urban Astronomy Guide provides the ideal introduction to the fascinating hobby of astronomy for the town dweller. These days, you don't have to live close to a city or town centre to suffer from the effects of light pollution. From your back garden or rooftop observing site, your night sky will be illuminated by light from the surrounding city or town. And while, like everyone else, you will have to contend with the vagaries of the weather, you will have the added problem of poor air quality. But despite these difficulties, there is still a host of celestial delights to be seen! In this book, author Robin Scagell shows that night-time lighting and the resultant brightening of the sky can be combated, and demonstrates how to make the best of poor conditions. Although the unaided eye may be able to pick out only a few hundred stars, binoculars or a small telescope will reveal many times that number. A little optical aid can also give you good views of every type of major astronomical object, including star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. For example, for those who want to develop their interest further, there are special filters that let through the light from distant nebulae while blocking out wavelengths infested by unwanted stray light from streetlights. And modern CCDs allow modest amateur telescopes to penetrate the urban sky glow and reveal sights that would have taxed the largest professional instruments only 30 years or so ago. Philip's The Urban Astronomy Guide will show you how to get the most out of almost any sky with whatever equipment you have, or even with none at all.

Book The Return Viewer s Guide

Download or read book The Return Viewer s Guide written by Don Beeton and published by Revolution Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a boy in and around 1970 my friend invited me over to to look at the Moon using his new telescope. After viewing the Moon at least once I suddenly found myself seeing the most incredible series of spectacular sights. Starting with the sight of the most awesome celestial object, then well into the fantastic visual specticale that the Object causes to happen to and with the light from the Moon and the background of space. I did see what happens and I do know what happens. I can't answer the big how and why questions but I can say that I saw and I can write about what I saw and that's what I have done. In this book without the need or requirement to prove anything to anyone I provide future viewers with five separate Return Viewer Guides that they can rely and depend upon. Without reservation I can say and guarantee that the descriptions I offer and the five Viewer Guides that I have written will easily stand the test of time and will prove to be definitive, completely unique, and without any equal. In a sense this guide book will serve as the Official Program Guide for the Ancient Object's next return to and through it's crossing point between the Earth and the Moon. An historic event and what will become an historic Return Guide Book that can be yours to have as a souvenir into the future. Read more at: www.rev-press.com
