Book The Guardians of the Fallen Kingdom

Download or read book The Guardians of the Fallen Kingdom written by Bojan Medic and published by Bojan Medic. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thus, in words composed by a host of nameless bards, the songs of Serbia carry on the nation's story, and every Serb feels himself an actor in a great drama that is being played out across the centuries. He continues the work of his forefathers. He avenges their sufferings. But he also works for the future. He builds the framework of an age to come. He is a living link in one great chain that stretches backward far into the past and reaches forward to the generations who shall see Serbia great and free. It is more than obvious that Sam Gamgee was thinking in much the same way, in the moment he realized that he and Frodo were in the same story as the heroes of old stories and songs. He then said: Why, to think of it, we're in the same tale still! It's going on. - Then he asked: - Don't the great tales never end? Frodo answered on his question: No, they never end as tales. But the people in them come and go when their part's ended. Our part will end later... or sooner. By writing this dialogue between Frodo and Sam, Tolkien was more than clear. In addition to the ongoing Great War of the Ring, the Hobbits consider themselves participants in the great tale that stretches far into the past, a story that is transmitted orally from generation to generation through folk legends, myths and songs, without breaking it... J.R.R. Tolkien was trying to learn Serbian language in order to read Serbian epic poems in the original. These were the poems about great heroes from the Serbian past (Czar Lazar, King Marko, Karageorge...), and great battles that changed the course of Serbian history (Kosovo battle, battle of the Misar...). There is no evidence that J.R.R. Tolkien was inspired by the heroes and battles from the Serbian history and epic poetry while writing his epic trilogy. But when you open the pages of this book you will realize they are not needed. Serbian history and epic poetry are fully within the fantasy world of "The Lord of the Rings." The Guardians of the Fallen Kingdom is not a book for blind admirers of Tolkien's Middle-earth but for an intelligent and well-read reader who is trying to penetrate to the real essence of things. Unlike most books on similar topics, this book explains which historical White City might be hiding behind Minas Tirith, whose coat of arms might be an inspiration for the Eye of Sauron, which field and flowers that grow on it might serve as inspiration for the Field of Cormallen and Culumalda trees, where could be the historical Crossroads of the Fallen King, Black Gate of Mordor and many other places from J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium.

Book Goliath

  • Author : Tom Gauld
  • Publisher : Drawn & Quarterly
  • Release : 2021-05-04
  • ISBN : 1770461949
  • Pages : 97 pages

Download or read book Goliath written by Tom Gauld and published by Drawn & Quarterly. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 2011 release of Goliath, Tom Gauld has solidified himself as one of the world’s most revered and critically-acclaimed cartoonists working today. From his weekly strips in the Guardian and New Scientist, to his lauded graphic novels You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack and Mooncop, Gauld’s fascination with the intersection between history, literary criticism, and pop culture has become the crux of his work. Now in paperback, with a new cover and smaller size, Goliath is a retelling of the classic myth, this time from Goliath's side of the Valley of Elah. Goliath of Gath isn't much of a fighter. He would pick admin work over patrolling in a heartbeat, to say nothing of his distaste for engaging in combat. Nonetheless, at the behest of the king, he finds himself issuing a twice-daily challenge to the Israelites: "Choose a man. Let him come to me that we may fight." Quiet moments in Goliath's life as an isolated soldier are accentuated by Gauld's trademark drawing style: minimalist scenery, geometric humans, and densely crosshatched detail. Simultaneously tragic and bleakly funny, Goliath displays a sensitive wit and a bold line--a traditional narrative reworked, remade, and revolutionized into a classic tale of Gauld’s very own.

Book Guardians of the Valley

Download or read book Guardians of the Valley written by Dean King and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * “We see through this book the immense power of language…to change the minds of lawmakers and tourists alike.” —The New York Times Book Review * “A poignant portrait of an era when mere words could change the world.” —San Francisco Chronicle * The dramatic and uplifting story of legendary outdoorsman and conservationist John Muir’s journey to save Yosemite is “a rich, enjoyable excursion into a seminal period in environmental history” (The Wall Street Journal). In June of 1889 in San Francisco, John Muir—iconic environmentalist, writer, and philosopher—meets face-to-face for the first time with his longtime editor Robert Underwood Johnson, an elegant and influential figure at The Century magazine. Before long, the pair, opposites in many ways, decide to venture to Yosemite Valley, the magnificent site where twenty years earlier, Muir experienced a personal and spiritual awakening that would set the course of the rest of his life. Upon their arrival the men are confronted with a shocking vision, as predatory mining, tourism, and logging industries have plundered and defaced “the grandest of all the special temples of Nature.” While Muir is devastated, Johnson, an arbiter of the era’s pressing issues in the pages of the nation’s most prestigious magazine, decides that he and Muir must fight back. The pact they form marks a watershed moment, leading to the creation of Yosemite National Park, and launching an environmental battle that captivates the nation and ushers in the beginning of the American environmental movement. “Comprehensively researched and compellingly readable” (Booklist, starred review), Guardians of the Valley is a moving story of friendship, the written word, and the transformative power of nature. It is also a timely and powerful “origin story” as the towering environmental challenges we face today become increasingly urgent.

Book excerpt: New York Times Magazine cartoonist Tom Gauld follows up his widely praised graphic novel Goliath with You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack, a collection of cartoons made for The Guardian. Over the past eight years, Gauld has produced a weekly cartoon for the Saturday Review section of Britain’s most well regarded newspaper. Only a handful of comics from this huge and hilarious body of work have ever been printed in North America – exclusively within the pages of the prestigious Believer magazine. You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack distils perfectly Gauld’s dark humor, impeccable timing, and distinctive style. Arrests by the fiction police and fictional towns designed by Tom Waits intermingle hilariously with piercing observations about human behavior and whimsical imaginings of the future. Again and again, Tom Gauld reaffirms his position as a first rank cartoonist, creating work infused with a deep understanding of both literary and cartoon history.
