Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the countries we served in during our National Service time were the United Kingdom, Europe, West Africa and the Far East. Only Kevin OSullivan saw active service. He describes the shock and the violence of ambushing terrorists while on patrol in Malaya. Michael Crowe in the navy visited more places than anyone and Barry Brown spent eighteen months in multi-cultural and vibrant West Africa travelling in Nigeria and the Gold Coast (Ghana). We all describe varying frustrations with the Services, which we responded to with cynicism and humour. But we all agree that it was an interesting and enjoyable experience and David Russell speaks for all of us when he writes that his understanding of the human condition was broadened enormously.

Book At the Edge of the Precipice

Download or read book At the Edge of the Precipice written by Robert V. Remini and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1850, America hovered on the brink of disunion. Tensions between slave-holders and abolitionists mounted, as the debate over slavery grew rancorous. An influx of new territory prompted Northern politicians to demand that new states remain free; in response, Southerners baldly threatened to secede from the Union. Only Henry Clay could keep the nation together. At the Edge of the Precipice is historian Robert V. Remini's fascinating recounting of the Compromise of 1850, a titanic act of political will that only a skillful statesman like Clay could broker. Although the Compromise would collapse ten years later, plunging the nation into civil war, Clay's victory in 1850 ultimately saved the Union by giving the North an extra decade to industrialize and prepare. A masterful narrative by an eminent historian, At the Edge of the Precipice also offers a timely reminder of the importance of bipartisanship in a bellicose age.

Is she in a coma? She doesn't remember dying, and she has no memories of the life she left behind. All she knows is that she's trapped in a consciousness without a body and she's spending every moment watching a stranger. Breckon Cody's on the edge. He's being ripped apart by grief so intense it literally hurts to breathe. On the surface, Breckon is trying to hold it together for his family and his girlfriend, but underneath he's barely hanging on. Even though she didn't know him in life, Ashlyn sees Breckon's pain, and she's determined to find a way help him. As her own distressing memories emerge from the darkness, she struggles to communicate with the boy who can't see her, but whose life is suddenly intertwined with hers. In alternating voices of the main characters, My Beating Teenage Heart paints a devastatingly vivid picture of both the heartbreak and the promise of teenage life—a life Ashlyn would do anything to recover and Breckon seems desperate to destroy—and will appeal to fans of Sarah Dessen, John Green, and David Levithan. Book The Last Moon

    Book Details:
  • Author : DeAnn Lubell
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2010-03-04
  • ISBN : 1450014453
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book The Last Moon written by DeAnn Lubell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 8, 1902, Mt. Pele on the West Indies island of Martinique near the seaport town of St. Pierre erupted in a cloud of gas and fire in one of the most awesome and destructive pyrotechnic displays ever offered by nature. Four minutes later, thirty thousand citizens lay dead or dying, and the town engulfed in flames. Mother Nature was not entirely to blame for this disaster. In truth, the real culprits were the rather more deplorable traits found in Human Nature. If not for the dishonesty and corruption of officials who placed politics, greed, and racial intolerance above the welfare of the people, this devastating catastrophe did not have to happen. The Last Moon remains true to historical facts and personal testimonies. The main characters presented in this novel are either composites of real individuals who lived in Martinique prior to the eruption or actual people who influenced the turn of events. Also historically genuine are the Creole language, clothing, mix of races, diversified lifestyles, corrupt politics, racial discrimination, whorehouses, blackmagic, clergy, plantations, waterfront, plagues, floods, earthquakes, tidal-waves, lava and mud flows, volcanic eruptions, foreign ships, deadly snakes, mutant insects, lush topography, and the before-and-after sequence of the 1902 tragedy. Dramatically captured in this exotic saga are acts of friendship, forbidden love, lust, pride, gluttony, cruelty, corruption, mass murder, bravery, sacrifice, survival, faith, and hope. Book Review Very highly recommended for community library historical fiction collections. A riveting read from first page to last, "The Last Moon" is a novel set against the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee on the West Indies island of Martinique that resulted in the death of some thirty thousand people and the seaport town of St. Pierre consumed by fire. An impressive historical novel, author DeAnn Lubell has paid careful attention to detail and accuracy with respect to historical facts including the Creole language spoken there, the culture, lifestyles, geography, and the geological phenomena that occur with respect to the eruption of a volcano. Against this superbly presented background is an engaging story of lust, greed, corruption, and murder, as well as friendship, love, sacrifice, faith, hope -- and survival. Deftly written from beginning to end, and available in both a hardcover and a softcover edition, "The Last Moon" is very highly recommended for community library historical fiction collections. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) Dear DeAnnI just finished reading THE LAST MOON, and I'm so impressed with your wonderful book! The research you must have done is overwhelming with attention to such detail. I loved Yvette, such a strong and interesting character! You took me back in time and to a place I've never been, but allowed me to experience it as though I was actually there. I'm still dusting the volcanic ash off myself! Book Abraham Lincoln and a New Birth of Freedom

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln and a New Birth of Freedom written by Howard Jones and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one has fully examined Lincoln's impact on Civil War diplomacy, particularly as it derived from his constantly evolving views toward slavery and the way these ideas fitted into his concept of the Union. In 1945 Jay Monaghan published his classic work, A Diplomat in Carpet Slippers: Abraham Lincoln Deals with Foreign Affairs, but it rested almost entirely on American sources and reflected both a Union and a Lincoln bias. Moreover, Monaghan brought insufficient focus to Lincoln's efforts to tie antislavery to the creation of a better Union. This gap in the historiography of the period proviedes the rationale for this book. - Prologue.
