Book Alienation of Church Wealth in Mexico

Download or read book Alienation of Church Wealth in Mexico written by Jan Bazant and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and the State in Mexico became prominent soon after independence in 1821, and during the next three decades national and state governments made various attempts to reduce ecclesiastical influence in the social, economic and political life of the nation. Few of such efforts met with much success, and it was not until 1856 that a major reform was initiated. Legislation was issued which affected all spheres of clerical activity but the most vital and controversial aspect of the reform involved the measures adopted to dispossess the Church of its wealth. The extensive ecclesiastical holdings of urban and rural real estate and capital were nationalized and redistributed. Professor Bazant examines earlier attempts at nationalization, and describes in detail the implementations of the 1856 Lerdo Law and subsequent decrees. Using selected areas of the country, he traces the precise effects of the redistribution of Church property and capital, describing the terms of sale or transfer, the number of sales, the buyers, their nationality and occupation, and the total value of the amounts involved.

Book A Hercules in the Cradle

Download or read book A Hercules in the Cradle written by Max M. Edling and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max M. Edling shows how the fledgling American government raised money and incurred debt for its military needs, from the War of Independence through the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. America s military strength, Edling shows, was a function of its ability to raise money--and it was only when this ability flourished that America began to become an international power. By the time of the Civil War, Edling writes, less than a century after war broke out between Britain and her American colonies, the United States had traveled a long way toward its present position as the most powerful nation in the world. He views the failed attempt to establish a strong republic and the subsequent civil war that plagued the young nation. From this first decade, two polarized factions emerged, one federalist and populist, the other attempted to keep much of the old order of authroitarianism and church power established under colonialism. The were to be called the Liberals and the Conservatives, who would vie for power over the next century.

Book Origins of Instability in Early Republican Mexico

Download or read book Origins of Instability in Early Republican Mexico written by Donald Fithian Stevens and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following independence, Mexico was transformed from a strong, stable colony into a republic suffering from economic decline and political strife. Marked by political instability--characterized by Antonio López de Santa Anna's rise to the presidency on eleven distinct occasions--this period of Mexico's history is often neglected and frequently misunderstood. Donald F. Stevens' revisionist account challenges traditional historiography to examine the nature and origins of Mexico's political instability. Turning to quantitative methods as a way of providing a framework for examining existing hypotheses concerning Mexico's instability, the author dissects the relationship between instability and economic cycles; contradicts the notion that Mexico's social elite could have increased political stability by becoming more active; and argues that the principal political fissures were not liberal vs. conservative but were among radical, moderate, and conservative. Ultimately, Stevens maintains, the origins of that country's instability are to be found in the contradictions between liberalism and Mexico's traditional class structure, and the problems of creating an independent republic from colonial, monarchical, and authoritarian traditions.

Using recent scholarship and discoveries, the authors have also expanded the sections on the historical background of Spanish conquistadors, and the social, religious, and cultural history of Mexico's colonial period, with a particular emphasis on its impact on women and indigenous cultures.
