Download or read book Intersected Identities written by Erica Segre and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has always been an important visual element to the construction and questioning of national identity in post-Independence Mexico, though one that has not always been given its due, outside of the celebrated and much-studied muralists. Ranging from the early nineteenth century to the present – from the vogue for the picturesque, illustrated periodicals and the influential writings of Altamirano to a wealth of twentieth-century graphic artists, filmmakers and photographers – this book re-examines the complex variety of ways in which that visual element has operated. In particular, it looks at the ways in which discourses concerning ethnicity and cultural hybridity have been echoed and transformed in Mexican visual culture, resulting in fields of visual discourse which are eclectic and increasingly self-reflexive.
Download or read book El Libro de la Fotograf a Digital written by Scott Kelby and published by Peachpit Press. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography—how to take professional-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think). Here’s how Scott describes this book’s brilliant premise: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a photography lecture. In real life, I'd just say, 'Put on your zoom lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' That's what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend—without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak." This isn't a book of theory—full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With nearly 200 of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade," this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time. Each page covers a single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you're tired of taking shots that look "okay," and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you.
Download or read book Image and Memory written by Wendy Watriss and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FotoFest 1992, a major festival of international photography, brought Latin American photography into focus for a wide audience. Offering a diverse selection of photographers, countries, artistic movements, and subject matter, the show revealed a photographic tradition rich in history and creativity. Drawing from the more than 1,000 images exhibited by FotoFest, this book documents the work of fifty-two photographers from ten countries. The photographs range from the opening of the Brazilian frontier in the 1880s to a secret archive of documentary images from El Salvador's recent civil war to works of specifically aesthetic intent. Many of the photographs appear here in print for the first time. Watriss's opening essay provides the curatorial overview for the book. Lois Zamora examines the roots of visual image-making in Latin American cultures. Boris Kossoy addresses the history of Latin American photography through the nineteenth century, while Fernando Castro covers the contemporary scene. With its compelling images and English-Spanish text, this book will serve as a benchmark for future studies of photography in Latin America.

Download or read book Women and Print Culture written by Donna M. Kabalen Vanek and published by Arte Público Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writers, editors, activists and prostitutes. Women along the US-Mexico border served in many more capacities than simply wives and mothers, though those were their primary roles. Historically, religion was the link between women and the written word. According to the editors of this volume, Mexican women—particularly those from the privileged classes—had access to secular reading beginning in the 1800s. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several periodicals dedicated to the education of the “fairer sex” emerged. Though the male voice initially predominated, women began contributing poetry and essays to various publications and eventually became editors of their own magazines and newspapers. This collection of ten essays, based on the examination of publications from the US-Mexico region between 1850-1950, explores the role of women in print culture. Leading to a better understanding of women in the history of Mexican border life, the essays are organized in three thematic groupings: “Exploring the Archives: Women and Written Culture in Northeastern Mexico during the Late Nineteenth Century,” “The Cultural History of Women and Print Culture” and “A Transcultural View of Women and their Role as Activists in Northern Mexico and Texas.” The scholars who researched the archival collections of newspapers, magazines and other print matter write about a variety of topics, including the participation of women in the War of Independence (1810-1821) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the belief females were inferior and should not be educated outside the home and even the cultural history of prostitutes. Published as part of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage project, this compendium of academic articles sheds light on women’s roles—especially as readers, writers and editors—in the Texas-Mexico border region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Rethinking Juan Rulfo s Creative World written by Nuala Finnegan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though primarily known for his haunting, enigmatic novel Pedro Páramo and the unrelenting depictions of the failures of post-revolutionary Mexico in his short story collection, El Llano en llamas, Juan Rulfo also worked as scriptwriter on various collaborative film projects and his powerful interventions in the area of documentary photography ensure that he continues to inspire interest worldwide. Bringing together some of the most significant names in Rulfian scholarship, this anthology engages with the complexity and diversity of Rulfo’s cultural production. The essays in the collection bring the Rulfian texts into dialogues with other cultural traditions and techniques including the Japanese Noh or "mask" plays and modernist experimentation in the Irish language. They also deploy diverse theoretical frameworks that range from Roland Barthes’ work on studium and punctum in photography to Henri Lefebvre’s ideas on space and spatiality and the postmodern insights of Jean Baudrillard on the nature of the simulacrum and the hyperreal. In this way, innovative approaches are brought to bear on the Rulfian texts as a way of illuminating the rich tensions and anxieties they evoke about Mexico, about history, about art and about the human condition.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Descubriremos a Vicente Calderón.
