Book Development Arrested

Book excerpt: A new edition of a classic history of the Mississippi River Delta Development Arrested is a major reinterpretation of the 200-year-old conflict between African American workers and the planters of the Mississippi Delta. The book measures the impact of the plantation system on those who suffered its depredations firsthand, while tracing the decline and resurrection of plantation ideology in national public policy debate. Despite countless defeats under the planter regime, African Americans in the Delta continued to push forward their agenda for social and economic justice. Throughout this remarkably interdisciplinary book, ranging across fields as diverse as rural studies, musicology, development studies, and anthropology, Woods demonstrates the role of music—including jazz, rock and roll, soul, rap and, above all, the blues—in sustaining a radical vision of social change.

Book Mississippi Delta Restoration

Download or read book Mississippi Delta Restoration written by John W. Day and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a new and provocative treatment dealing with and defining sustainable pathways for the restoration of the Mississippi Delta. Based on a consideration of natural functioning of the Mississippi delta, factors that led to its severe deterioration, and major global trajectories of the 21st century, the authors investigate possible future pathways for sustainable management of the delta. They consider current conditions as well as future trajectories of climate and energy and resource scarcity. The book concludes that without profound changes of how humans live in and manage the delta, sustainability of the delta will be profoundly compromised.

Book Energy Production in the Mississippi River Delta

Download or read book Energy Production in the Mississippi River Delta written by J. W. Day and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a century, the energy industry had a profound impact on the Mississippi Delta, including both the natural and socio-economic systems. The purpose of this book is to describe the delta, how oil and gas (O&G) activities have impacted both natural and socio-economic systems and how much of the degradation could have been avoided. The Mississippi Delta formed over the past six thousand years but, in less than a century, lost 25 percent of coastal wetlands. O&G activities contributed significantly to this loss. O&G production began in the early 20th century and over 600 conventional fields were developed. Production ramped up rapidly, peaking around 1970, then declined. As O&G production declines, produced water dominates fluid production, and this high salinity brine is laced with a variety of toxins. Often, O&G was produced rapidly and much was left in the ground and is now technically and economically unavailable. With careful planning, this situation could have been avoided. The industry also affected the regulatory framework by weakening regulations, enforcement and impacts were not adequately addressed, and more profits flowed out of state. Thus, the state was economically and environmentally worse off. The industry should be compelled to contribute expertise and financial resources to restoration of the delta.

Book Sedimentary Framework of the Modern Mississippi Delta

Download or read book Sedimentary Framework of the Modern Mississippi Delta written by Harold N. Fisk and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arrangement of sedimentary units in the birdfoot delta of the Mississippi River is comparable to the structure of a leaf. Present-day facies can be correlated with delta platform deposits, obtained from borings. The shape and distribution of sedimentary units, as disclosed from these borings, are shown on maps and sections. Factors controlling delta growth are the load of the river, number of main distributaries of the river, depth of water into which the delta front advances, and subsidence. The rate of lengthening of Southwest Pass, as determined from hydrographic surveys, provides a basis for establishing the rate of bird-foot delta growth and the date when the delta started to form, approximately 1500 A.D. Since then, nearly 27 cubic miles of sediment have accumulated in the delta platform.
