Book The Effect of Changing Technology Use on Plant Performance in the Canadian Manufacturing Sector

Download or read book The Effect of Changing Technology Use on Plant Performance in the Canadian Manufacturing Sector written by John R. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates how changes in technology use of individual plants in the Canadian manufacturing sector are related to two measures of performance - productivity growth and market-share growth. The paper describes whether plants are adopting new advanced technologies and if they do so, whether they enjoy superior performance in these two areas. It makes use of panel data on advanced technology use from Statistics Canada's 1993 and 1998 advanced manufacturing surveys that are combined with longitudinal data on plant performance. Growth in technology use during the period is significantly associated with relative productivity growth. In turn, growth in relative labour productivity is translated into growth in market share. Plants that improve their production efficiencies or produce higher quality products are able to realize gains in market share. Growth in the use of advanced technologies also had a positive impact on a plant's growth in market share, probably through its impact on product innovation. The market rewards those businesses that managed to improve their efficiency or the quality of their product and concomitantly their labour productivity with an increase in market share. The paper also investigates other plant characteristics that are related to productivity and marketshare growth. R&D is related to market-share growth. The use of information and communications networks for ordering goods and services is associated with higher productivity growth.

Book Innovation and Knowledge Creation in an Open Economy

Download or read book Innovation and Knowledge Creation in an Open Economy written by John R. Baldwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-03 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of innovation - its intensity, the sources used for knowledge creation, and its impacts - is based on a comprehensive survey of innovation of Canadian manufacturing firms. Attention is paid to the different actors in the system, who both compete with and complement one another. The study investigates how innovation regimes differ across size of firm and across industries. Owing to the high degree of foreign investment in Canada, special attention is paid to the performance of foreign-owned firms. The innovation regime of Canadian innovators is compared with results of studies of other industrialized countries. The picture of a typical innovator is a firm that combines internal resources and external contacts to develop a set of complementary strategies. The study finds that innovating firms depend not only on R&D, but also on ideas and technology from various other sources, both internal and external to the firm.

Book Sustaining Global Growth and Development

Download or read book Sustaining Global Growth and Development written by Michele Fratianni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustaining Global Growth and Development focuses on the new challenges for sustaining growth in the twenty-first century and the role of the G7 and IMF in meeting these challenges amidst the new processes of regionalism now emerging. The volume has three central purposes: · to assess how and how well the G7 has addressed its core 2002 agenda of sustaining global growth, reducing poverty in Africa, and combating terrorism and its financing · to examine how the IMF has approached these issues, and related work of the G7 · to explore how the G7, IMF and other international institutions are addressing global growth and development challenges in the context of the new processes of regionalism. Pressures such as currency consolidation in Asia and economic union in Africa are studied. This book builds on previous volumes in the series with a heavy focus on the World Bank, the regional development banks and the many other international institutions that work in the field of development.

Book Advanced Technology Use in Canadian Manufacturing Establishments

Download or read book Advanced Technology Use in Canadian Manufacturing Establishments written by John R. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the characteristics of Canadian manufacturing plants that are related to the use of advanced technologies. The data used are taken from the 1989 Survey of Manufacturing Technology and are linked to administrative data taken from the Census of Manufacturers. Technology use is defined first as incidence (whether a technology is used) and second as intensity (the number of technologies used). These variables (incidence and intensity) are then related to a number of characteristics that represent the competencies of the plant reporting technology use--its size, the size of its owning enterprise, the recent growth of the plant, the number of industries in which its owning enterprise operates, its age, and its nationality. The results are then compared to several recent U.S. studies.

Book Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia

Download or read book Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia written by Shahid Yusuf and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the coming decades, East Asian economies must face the challenges of an increasingly globalized marketplace. This book explores the changing parameters of competition in East Asia, and argues that success ultimately will depend on the ability of the region's firms to harness the potential of global production networks and to build their own innovative capability. Presenting the latest findings on global production networks and the evolution of technological capabilities, it provides researchers, students, and policymakers with in-depth information and analysis on key issues related to growth and development in East Asia. East Asian firms must not only achieve greater efficiency but also become more innovative, offering differentiated products in order to vie with other first-tier suppliers of multinational corporations. These firms will also need to develop a technological edge if they are to compete with corporations from the leading OECD countries and form their own global production networks. 'Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia' argues that a development strategy linked to technological advance will be necessary to foster the growth of innovative national firms that can remain competitive in global markets.
