Book Control of Growth Factors and Prevention of Cancer

Download or read book Control of Growth Factors and Prevention of Cancer written by Michael B. Sporn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now apparent that several fields of investigation are converging upon each other as the goal of finding a practical way to prevent cancer is pursued. The present monograph represents the efforts of an interdisciplinary ESO Task Force that was convened to assess interactions of peptide growth factors and steroid-like molecules in the prevention of cancer. Each of the participants in the Task Force represents a differentscientific discipline, and the monogrph is intended to be a synthesis of their different approaches to the common problem of cancer prevention. It is hoped that the reader will find this monograph to be of use in the evaluation of both preclinical and clinical approaches to the major issues that face us in chemoprevention. It is clear that prevention of cancer is an idea whose time has come, and the problem now is to implement the most effective approaches toward achieving the desired goals.

Book Boundaries between Promotion and Progression during Carcinogenesis

Download or read book Boundaries between Promotion and Progression during Carcinogenesis written by Oscar Sudilovsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pUrpOSE! of this conference was not to define the two areas that are being bound, which might be a well nigh impossible proposition. Rather, its focus was to concentrate on the mechanistic similarities between promotion and progression. Are the areas involved within the boundaries a continuum? Are these two simultaneous processes? Or are some of the affected cells in the stage of promotion when at the same time others have undergone irreversi ble changes tha. t position them in the stage of progression? Or are these two stages the same thing, but called by different names? To explore such concepts we assembled investigators with various back grounds and asked them to specifically address these and other questions about "The Boundaries", within the context of the session to which they con tributed. The conference lasted two and a half days, from Wednesday to Friday. There were at least four speakers per session with morning and after noon sessions each day, except on Friday when the meeting ended at noon. The first day, each speaker had 25 minutes to present a position, followed by five minutes of discussion. At the end of the session there were 40 or 50 minutes of exchange on all the issues examined. For the remaining days, there were 25 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of discussion.

Download or read book Oncogenes and Growth Control written by Patricia Kahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is growth controlled in normal cells? How are the growth control mechanisms perturbed in cancer cells? This book provides an up-to-date description of research aimed at resolving these questions. It is organized into four sections, each containing a series of short reviews written by experts in the field. The general headings are: growth factors, receptors, and related oncogenes: transduction of mitogenic signals and ras oncogenes; nuclear oncogenes and regulation of gene expression; and multiple steps involved in malignant transformation. The articles emphasize concepts rather than detailed facts and are intended not only for specialists in the field but also for interested readers, such as physicians and advanced students, who wish to stay abreast of developments in one of the most exciting fields in current biomedical research.

Book Oncogenes Genes and Growth Factors

Download or read book Oncogenes Genes and Growth Factors written by Gordon Guroff and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1987 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touching on virtually every area of biological science, from neurobiology to oncology and from basic research to clinical protocols, the chapters in this contributed work address every known structural relationship between growth factor, or growth factor receptor, and oncogene. The seminal observations published three years ago by Doolittle et al and Waterfield et al that there is a close structural relationship between the platelet-derived growth factor and the V-sis oncogene electrified the field. And aside from their structural relationship, it is now clear that many of the growth factors, acting on their target cells, induce the transcription of a battery of oncogenes. This volume represents the first effort to collect such material in one place. Chapters cover in detail the background information available about the factors for which relationships have been established. Other chapters offer detailed discussions of growth factor receptor genes for which relationships have not yet been observed. The information gathered here should prove invaluable to researchers in this new and rapidly advancing field.

Book Cancer Gene Therapy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nagy Habib
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-04-11
  • ISBN : 0306468174
  • Pages : 496 pages

Download or read book Cancer Gene Therapy written by Nagy Habib and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the coming of the new millennium we are witnessing a revolution in our understanding of cancer genetics. These are very exciting times. Today we have at our disposal the technology to diagnose abnormalities in our cancer genes and the means to correct the deficit and very soon we will have the complete sequence of the human genome. With the use of gene chip technology the way doctors will be able to assess patients will change completely. Today we can diagnose abnormalities in ten thousand genes and within a short period of time we will be able to screen through our genome and discover potential abnormalities in our proto-oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes, differentiating genes, apoptotic genes and pro-inflammatory genes. In this book various authors have highlighted specific genes that could be expressed, overexpressed, neutralised or h- nessed to achieve cancer control. The problem of transferring the therapeutic gene into the cancer cell has been partly addressed with major developments in the field of naked plasmid DNA, adenovirus, retrovirus and adeno-associated viruses. However, further improvements are yet to be made to achieve significant gene transfer. Gene expression, in particular specificity of gene transfer, is obviously an important issue and one which is highlighted in this book by the use of specific promoter.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Cell Growth and Oncogenesis

Download or read book Cell Growth and Oncogenesis written by S. Papa and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid progress has been made in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of cell growth and oncogenesis during the past decade. This book comprises recent results on the regulation of cell growth in normal and neoplastic tissues by growth factors including hormones, and by the activation and inactivation of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, respectively. Special attention has been given to the presentation of the frequently neglected close correlation between changes in signal transduction and metabolism pathways during oncogenesis.
