Book The Principles of Vegetable Gardening Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Vegetable Gardening Classic Reprint written by L. H. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Vegetable-Gardening Market-gardening is the growing of vegetables for sale. The American term truck-gardening is really synonymous, although it is sometimes used in connec tion with the larger market-gardening enterprises. An arbitrary distinction between market-gardening and truck gardening was made by J. H. Hale in the work for the Eleventh Census. In Bulletin 41 of the Census Bureau, truck gardening is understood as the business carried on in favored localities at a distance from market, water and rail transportation being necessary, while market-gardening is conducted near local mar kets, the grower of vegetables using his own team for transporting his products direct to either the retailer or consumer. This distinction is not a fundamental one, and is not the general understanding of the terms; but it seemed to be necessary, for statistical reasons, to make the separation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Vegetable Garden Eaten while fresh if, however, their transit from the garden to the table is delayed, as inevitably it must be when the vegetables have to pass through the hands of several dealers before they finally reach the consumer, they lose some at least of their best qualities. There is no comparison, either as regards their palatableness or health giving qualities, between vegetables freshly gathered and those that have passed through the hands of the grower and the wholesale salesman and are finally bought from the greengrocer. Every one then who has a garden, even if it is small, should devote at least a part of it to the culti vation of vegetables he will be the gainer thereby. Download or read book The Orchard Lawn and Garden Guide written by Geo H. Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchard, Lawn and Garden Guide: A Ready Reference Guide for the Growing of Vegetables, Shade and Fruit Trees, Flowers and Shrubs, Lawn Making, Pruning and Spraying, Etc The first edition of this book under the name of The A. B. C. Garden Book, published in the spring of 1920, was a small booklet on vegetable gardening. The book was hardly out of press before I realized the demand for a larger and more complete book, covering a wider field. This is my second effort to bring before the public a book that will be useful to city and small town gardeners, and while I have exercised every care in choosing reliable information, I can scarcely hope to have escaped errors. With many years experience in gardening, planting, prun ing and spraying, as well as propagating, soiling and lawn making, I have here tried to give the reader the benefit of this experience. Should you find any errors or important omissions, I would appreciate your calling my attention to them, as it will be helpful to me in compiling other editions.
