Book Growing Stock Levels in Even aged Ponderosa Pine

Download or read book Growing Stock Levels in Even aged Ponderosa Pine written by Clifford A. Myers and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth of the most widely distributed pine in North America is under joint study by the western Forest and Range Experiment Stations of the U.S. Forest Service. Young, even-aged ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) stands are being examined over a wide range of tree sizes, stand densities, and site index. The single plan that co-ordinates activities of the four Stations is an example of how the growing stock problem can be handled for a widely distributed species. The wide range in treatments should provide data needed to answer the questions that arise in evaluation and application of multiple use management of ponderosa pine forests.

Book Growth of Planted Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern California

Download or read book Growth of Planted Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern California written by William W. Oliver and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth was strongly related to growing stock level (GSL) for 5 years after thinning 20-year-old poles on Site Index50 115 land at the Elliot Ranch Plantation in northern California. Five GSL's- basal areas anticipated when trees average 10 inches d. b. h. or more - ranging from 40 to 160 square feet per acre were tested. Periodic annual increment (PAI) in diameter decreased curvilinearly from 0.51 to 0.21 inch, with increasing GSL's from 40 to 160. But only trees in plots heavily thinned to GSL 40 (and briefly in GSL 70) grew faster in diameter after thinning than these same trees grew before thinning. PAI in basal area and net volume rose steadily with increasing GSL9s, reaching 9.0 square feet and 255 cubic feet per acre, respectively, at GSL 160. Apparently, even light thinning reduced volume production, but thinning still is recommended to shorten time until first commercial entry and to promote stand health.

Book Management of Ponderosa Pine in Even aged Stands in the Southwest

Download or read book Management of Ponderosa Pine in Even aged Stands in the Southwest written by Robert R. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Potential production of ponderosa pine in the Southwest is simulated for various combinations of stand density, site index, age, and thinningschedule. Such estimates are needed to project future development of stands managed in different ways.

Book Silviculture of Southwestern Ponderosa Pine

Download or read book Silviculture of Southwestern Ponderosa Pine written by Gilbert Herman Schubert and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the status of our knowledge of ponderosa pine silviculture in the southwestern States of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Economic value, impact on other uses, and the timber resource are discussed first, followed by ecological background, site quality, growth and yield, and silviculture and management. Relevant literature is discussed along with observations, experience, and results of unpublished research. Treatise is intended to serve as a reference tool for guidance in making management decisions and prescribing silvicultural treatments. Research needs are also considered.

Book Methods of Cutting Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest

Download or read book Methods of Cutting Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest written by Gilbert H. Schubert and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the study is to obtain information on the growth and yield of even-aged stands of different stocking levels. The plot will also serve as the start of a detailed growing stock study for the ponderosa pine region.

Book Differing Ponderosa Pine Forest Structures Their Growth and Yield and Mountain Pine Beetle Impacts

Download or read book Differing Ponderosa Pine Forest Structures Their Growth and Yield and Mountain Pine Beetle Impacts written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clifford A. Myers conceived the ponderosa pine growing stock levels (GSL) study in 1961 and completed installation of the study in 1963 in western South Dakota on the Black Hills Experimental Forest (BHEF). The GSL concept was intended to help plan, implement, and illustrate tree thinning strategies (from below) in even-aged stands. A GSL is the suggested tree density (i.e., trees and basal area per acre) based on d.b.h. that can be tended to produce a desired basal area per acre (e.g., 80, 100, 120 square feet) when the mean d.b.h. is 10 inches. Plots representing GSLs 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 were thinned and measured through 2014. The thinnings that occurred in the GSL 80 plots showed the most promise for producing commercially sized trees and volumes through 2010. Unfortunately, by 2014, mountain pine beetles killed trees in all of the plots and ended the study.
