Book Ground Water in Southeastern Nevada Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ground Water in Southeastern Nevada The area covered by this report lies in southeastern Nevada and comprises about 17,000 square miles, of which about 6,000 square miles is in Clark County, 8,500 in Lincoln County, 300 in White Pine County, and 2,000 in Nye County. (See fig. 1.) The area thus covered is about the size of Massachusetts and New Hampshire combined. The San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad, commonly known as the Salt Lake route, crosses the eastern and southern parts of the area, passing through Caliente, Moapa, and Las Vegas. Two branch roads connect with the main line, one extending from Pioche to Caliente and another from Moapa to St. Thomas. The Las Vegas & Tonopah Railroad, which is subsidiary to the Salt Lake route, extends from Las Vegas northwestward to Goldfield. Purpose Of Investigation. The agricultural development of an arid region, such as is covered by this report, is dependent on the water supply available for irrigation and for domestic use. Large areas of good soil lie idle for want of water to make them productive, and most of the water that falls as rain or snow is dissipated and produces very little vegetation that is of economic value. A large amount of water percolates through the ground to the streams or valley floors, from which most of it is removed by evaporation. In some places this water can be intercepted in its course through the ground and used for domestic purposes, for watering live stock, or for irrigation. The need of more watering places on the range has long been felt, and recently the demand for information in regard to available supplies of ground water in Nevada has been increased by the agricultural, mining, and industrial development of the State. Book Ground Water in Big Smoky Valley Nevada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ground Water in Big Smoky Valley Nevada Classic Reprint written by O. E. Meinzer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ground Water in Big Smoky Valley, Nevada The demand for farm homes is so great and will continue to be so great that strenuous efforts will be made to utilize by irrigation every existing water supply. The ground waters underlying the Nevada deserts will certainly receive more attention in the future than they have in the past, and costly projects for their recovery will be under taken. Some of these projects will no doubt fail, but others will eventually be successful. SO great is the eagerness for land that the report Of a Single flowing well or the skillful advertisements of a promoter may at any time start a stream Of home seekers, ignorant Of the actual conditions and difficulties, into almost any Of the desert valleys Of the West. It is very desirable that the possibilities of these valleys should be thoroughly investigated before they are invaded by home seekers. The helplessness Of the ordinary settler when he confronts the unfa miliar and inherently difficult problems Of irrigation with ground waters is illustrated in Big Smoky Valley as well as in other areas. In the south basin Of this valley (see fig. 17) there have been a few attempts at irrigation with ground water, but they were made either so far up the slopes that the high lift rendered the cost prohibitive or else in the alkali area where agriculture is not feasible; none appar ently have been made in the zone in which the ground-water conditions are the most favorable. Book Groundwater Depletion in the United States 1900 2008

Download or read book Groundwater Depletion in the United States 1900 2008 written by Leonard F Konikow and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A natural consequence of groundwater withdrawals is the removal of water from subsurface storage, but the overall rates and magnitude of groundwater depletion in the United States are not well characterized. This study evaluates long- term cumulative depletion volumes in 40 separate aquifers or areas and one land use category in the United States, bringing together information from the literature and from new analy- ses. Depletion is directly calculated using calibrated ground- water models, analytical approaches, or volumetric budget analyses for multiple aquifer systems. Estimated groundwater depletion in the United States during 1900-2008 totals approx- imately 1,000 cubic kilometers (km3). Furthermore, the rate of groundwater depletion has increased markedly since about 1950, with maximum rates occurring during the most recent period (2000-2008) when the depletion rate averaged almost 25 km3 per year (compared to 9.2 km3 per year averaged over the 1900-2008 timeframe).

Book Statistical Methods in Water Resources

Download or read book Statistical Methods in Water Resources written by D.R. Helsel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-03-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on water quality and other environmental issues are being collected at an ever-increasing rate. In the past, however, the techniques used by scientists to interpret this data have not progressed as quickly. This is a book of modern statistical methods for analysis of practical problems in water quality and water resources. The last fifteen years have seen major advances in the fields of exploratory data analysis (EDA) and robust statistical methods. The 'real-life' characteristics of environmental data tend to drive analysis towards the use of these methods. These advances are presented in a practical and relevant format. Alternate methods are compared, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each as applied to environmental data. Techniques for trend analysis and dealing with water below the detection limit are topics covered, which are of great interest to consultants in water-quality and hydrology, scientists in state, provincial and federal water resources, and geological survey agencies. The practising water resources scientist will find the worked examples using actual field data from case studies of environmental problems, of real value. Exercises at the end of each chapter enable the mechanics of the methodological process to be fully understood, with data sets included on diskette for easy use. The result is a book that is both up-to-date and immediately relevant to ongoing work in the environmental and water sciences.

Download or read book Groundwater written by R. Allan Freeze and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1979 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors preceive a trend in the study and practice of groundwater hydrology. They see a science that is emerging from its geological roots and its early hydraulic applications into a full-fledged environmental science. They see a science that is becoming more interdisciplinary in nature and of greater importance in the affairs of man. This book is their response, and they have provided a text that is suited to the study of groundwater during this period of emergence.
