Download or read book Cosmic Rays and Earth written by J.W. Bieber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1998 marked the 50th anniversary of the invention of the neutron monitor, a key research tool in the field of space physics and solar-terrestrial relations. In honor of this occasion a workshop entitled 'Cosmic Rays and Earth' was organized to review the detection of cosmic rays at the surface and in the lower atmosphere of Earth, including the effect that this radiation has on the terrestrial environment. A special focus was the role of neutron monitors in the investigation of this radiation, on the science enabled by the unique dataset of the worldwide network of neutron monitors, and on continuing opportunities to use these data to solve outstanding problems. This book is the principal product of that workshop, integrating the contribu tions of all participants. Following a general summary of the workshop prepared by the editors, the volume leads off with a keynote article by Professor John Simpson describing his invention of the neutron monitor in 1948 and the early scientific discoveries made with this instrument.

Book An Extended Set of Cosmic ray Variational Coefficients

Download or read book An Extended Set of Cosmic ray Variational Coefficients written by R. E. Gold and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational coefficients quantitatively relate cosmic-ray spatial anisotropies and spectral changes to variations in ground-based cosmic ray monitor counting rates. We have calculated variational coefficients that are applicable to the analysis of a wide variety of transient cosmic ray phenomena. These calculations have been made for (1) a wide range of upper limiting rigidities from 29 to 500 GV; (2) power law rigidity spectra extending to exponents as high as +1.6; (3) spatial profiles independent of latitude; and (4) longitudinal profiles including square waves of 10, 30, 60 and an isotropic case. These variational coefficients have been calculated for eleven European cosmic ray stations, the tables being compatible with a previous publication for stations in the Western Hemisphere.

Book Tables of Non vertical Cutoff Rigidities for 76 Various Locations

Download or read book Tables of Non vertical Cutoff Rigidities for 76 Various Locations written by M. A. Shea and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tables of non-vertical cutoff rigidities calculated using the trajectory-tracing technique are given for 76 various locations. These calculations were made using the Finch and Leaton magnetic field coefficients appropriate for Epoch 1955. Each table includes the geographic coordinates and L value of each location, the zenith and azimuth angles for which the calculations were made, and the main cone cutoff rigidity, the Stormer cutoff rigidity, and the effective cutoff rigidity.

Book Asymptotic Directions and Vertical Cutoff Rigidities for Selected Cosmic ray Stations as Calculated Using the International Geomagnetic Reference Field Model Appropriate for Epoch 1975 0

Download or read book Asymptotic Directions and Vertical Cutoff Rigidities for Selected Cosmic ray Stations as Calculated Using the International Geomagnetic Reference Field Model Appropriate for Epoch 1975 0 written by M. A. Shea and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tables of asymptotic directions and vertical cutoff rigidities for a selected set of cosmic-ray stations are presented. These values were obtained by the integration of vertically incident cosmic-ray trajectories through the International Geomagnetic Reference Field model adjusted for a 1975.0 Epoch. The table of asymptotic directions contains the asymptotic latitudes and longitudes that specify the direction of approach from interplanetary space of a cosmic-ray particle. These asymptotic directions are given for specific rigidities above the main cone cutoff rigidity for each station, and at 0.01 GV rigidity intervals throughout the penumbra. Maps of the asymptotic directions for each station are also included. The table of vertical cutoff rigidities contains the geographic coordinates and L value of each cosmic-ray station together with the main cone cutoff rigidity, the Stormer cutoff rigidity, and the effective cutoff rigidity. Book Tables of Vertical Cutoff Rigidities for Epochs 1955 and 1960

Download or read book Tables of Vertical Cutoff Rigidities for Epochs 1955 and 1960 written by M. A. Shea and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tables of vertical cutoff rigidities calculated using the trajectory-tracing technique are given for two epochs of the geomagnetic field. The Finch and Leaton magnetic field coefficients were used for Epoch 1955, and the Jensen and Cain coefficients were used for Epoch 1960. Each table includes the geographic coordinates and L value of each location together with the main cone cutoff rigidity, the Stormer cutoff rigidity, and the effective cutoff rigidity. Data for approximately 2900 locations on the earth are presented.

Book excerpt: Tables of asymptotic directions and vertical cutoff rigidities for a selected set of cosmic-ray stations are presented. These values were obtained by the integration of vertically incident cosmic-ray trajectories through the Finch and Leaton (Epoch 1955) quiescent model of the geomagnetic field. Book Cosmic Gamma Ray Sources

    Book Details:
  • Author : K.S. Cheng
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-11-03
  • ISBN : 1402022565
  • Pages : 412 pages

Download or read book Cosmic Gamma Ray Sources written by K.S. Cheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-03 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-ray astronomy has undergone an enormous progress in the last 15 years. The success of satellite experiments like NASA's Comp ton Gamma-Ray Observatory and ESA's INTEGRAL mission, as well as of ground-based instruments have open new views into the high-energy Universe. Different classes of cosmic gamma-ray sources have been now detected at different energies, in addition to young radio pulsars and gamma-ray bursts, the classical ones. The new sources include radio quiet pulsars, microquasars, supernova remnants, starburst galaxies, ra dio galaxies, flat-spectrum radio quasars, and BL Lacertae objects. A large number of unidentified sources strongly suggests that this brief enumeration is far from complete. Gamma-ray bursts are now estab lished as extragalactic sources with tremendous energy output. There is accumulating evidence supporting the idea that massive stars and star forming regions can accelerate charged particles up to relativistic ener gies making them gamma-ray sources. Gamma-ray astronomy has also proved to be a powerful tool for cosmology imposing constraints to the background photon fields that can absorb the gamma-ray flux from dis tant sources. All this has profound implications for our current ideas about how particles are accelerated and transported in both the local and distant U niverse. The evolution of our knowledge on the gamma-ray sky has been so fast that is not easy for the non-specialist scientist and the graduate student to be aware of the full potential of this field or to grasp the fundamentals of a given topic in order to attempt some original contribution.
