Book Greetings from Cancerland

Download or read book Greetings from Cancerland written by Alysa Cummings and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04-18 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after Alysa Cummings was diagnosed with breast cancer, she sat down at her laptop computer and began keeping a journal. Over the two years of her cancer treatment, Alysa continued writing as she moved through the healthcare delivery system: I fantasized that I could somehow use my computer to craft a story with an upbeat next chapter or fairy tale happily-ever-after ending. Looking back, thats the only explanation I can come up with, why I felt so compelled to create a record of my day-to-day experiences as a cancer patient. The one thing I could control were these words that crowded each other as they quickly appeared on my computer screen; these stories that flowed through my fingertips in such a manic rush; these traumatic adventures that happened to me in a place I began to call CancerLand. CancerLand: its this parallel universe, I swear, separate and apart from the rest of life as I once knew it. How did I end up in this wacky Bizarro World filled with freaky language and even stranger rituals? Gradually her daily journal entries became vignettes and poems that were published on the OncoLink website. Greetings from CancerLand, a collection of Alysas writing from 2002-2012, charts one breast cancer survivors journey as she discovers the power of writing to move her recovery forward.

  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Journeys in Cancerland written by John-Peter Bradford and published by Sholom Glouberman. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journeys in Cancerland offers two object lessons in patient participation. For a long time, patients barely participated in their own care. Once diagnosed with a disease like cancer, they would enter an all-consuming acute care system that took over their lives until they went into remission or died. That this is no longer the case is due, for the most part, to patients and caregivers like John-Peter Bradford and Lisa Newman who have begun to take charge of their care. Their stories are not merely instructive about cancer -- they are lessons in how to live with life threatening illness and how to face death. John-Peter Bradford is CEO of Bradford Bachinski Limited and a member of the Cancer Care Advisory Committee of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. Lisa Newman has over thirty years' experience in the Ontario healthcare system as a clinician, supervisor, and manager. Foreword by Sholom Glouberman, President of the Patients' Association of Canada

Book Welcome to Cancerland My Humorously Toxic Journey

Download or read book Welcome to Cancerland My Humorously Toxic Journey written by Ritch Gaiti and published by Sedona Editions. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Think of it this way," my Thoracic Surgeon explained. "The right lung is divided into three sections, called lobes. Each is about the size of a folded up slice of pizza." He saw the curious look on my face. "Regular, not Sicilian," he clarified. "It's very hard to fold Sicilian slices." I nodded; clearly he had been trained well. * * * Doc P, my Pulmonologist, studied the computer screen. This could not be a good sign. Of course, just having a Pulmonologist is not a good sign. If I had a list of Things I Don't Want to Have, Pulmonologist would be near the top, way ahead of Periodontist and a notch behind Criminal Lawyer. Of course, I wouldn't want to have to have a Parole Officer, a Bankruptcy Attorney or Shingles either. * * * I had never given much thought to the nature of my demise, should that ever occur. However, if I had conjured up a list of potential causes, cancer would not have even been considered for consideration. However, if it had appeared on my list as one of my potential executioners d' jour, it would have been in the quest of completeness, not because I considered it within the realm of possibility. And, certainly it would have fallen to the very bottom, right after being eaten by sharks in my basement. To be clear, I have never had sharks or any other predatory fish in my basement, except for Attila, my kosher goldfish. Moreover, I live over forty miles from the ocean and there is no way that a shark could get to my house - and if it did, it is unlikely that it could open the basement door. The prevailing logic notwithstanding, I opted for shark-proofing my house as part of the termite guarantee. To wit, I had a slightly greater chance of being attacked by sharks in my basement than getting cancer. I was wrong. An entertaining and informative trip for anyone who has had cancer or plans to never get cancer or just likes to be entertained. **Previously published under the title: Fuck you Cancer ..and the Cell You Rode In On

Book Treatment and Management of Maladaptive Schemas

Download or read book Treatment and Management of Maladaptive Schemas written by Eric A. Kreuter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores new ground in the area of personal transformation, achieved partly through a person’s volition with a guide or catalyst. The authors research and define the dynamics of paradigmatic-thinking, incorporating a series of case vignettes of personal transitions. They describe impediments to such change, as well as the post-transformation state of mind where vulnerabilities may persist. The resultant need for on going commitment may include guidance or coaching in order to sustain the positive effect of a change in paradigm. An important feature of the book is a case study written by “Rex,” a participant in Dr. Kreuter’s earlier work. Rex has achieved significant change in his thought process, both in how he sees the world (less sinister) and his self-perspective (worthy and connected). An in-depth view of the “new” Rex shows the extent to which change has been possible in one human being. Combined with other evidence of shifting paradigms drawn from a cross-section of therapeutic practice, the authors connect the clinical data with their own developed philosophy on the subject of human behavior and the ability to change with the assistance of a therapist guide to effectuate and sustain such change.

Her woes and joys will make you cry, laugh - and think." Edward Lucas Tales from Cancerland follows on from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo and continues the author's adventures as she gets used to life with cancer. In turn absurd, hilarious, irreverent, but always candid, as she writes, "If I have made Cancerland sound as if it is sometimes fun, that is because it can be, and more often than one might think." Implausible as this sounds, if you or someone you care about are stuck in Cancerland, this cheery collection of tales, which meanders in a leisurely way around plot flaws in King Lear, escaping from hospitals, scoring your favourite drugs, what to do if told to pee into a sock, getting your children to empty the dishwasher, curing insomnia and dealing with well-meant but baffling gifts, is a high-spirited, informative and helpful guide to the country, its inhabitants and its customs.

Book excerpt: An unprecedented constellation of experts—leading cancer doctors, policymakers, cutting-edge researchers, national advocates, and more—explore the legacy and the shortcomings from the fifty-year war on cancer and look ahead to the future. The longest war in the modern era, longer than the Cold War, has been the war on cancer. Cancer is a complex, evasive enemy, and there was no quick victory in the fight against it. But the battle has been a monumental test of medical and scientific research and fundraising acumen, as well as a moral and ethical challenge to the entire system of medicine. In A New Deal for Cancer, some of today’s leading thinkers, activists, and medical visionaries describe the many successes in the long war and the ways in which our deeper failings as a society have held us back from a more complete success. Together they present an unrivaled and nearly complete map of the battlefield across dimensions of science, government, equity, business, the patient provider experience, and more, documenting our emerging understanding of cancer’s many unique dimensions and offering bold new plans to enable the American health care system to deliver progress and hope to all patients.

Book The Emperor of All Maladies

Download or read book The Emperor of All Maladies written by Siddhartha Mukherjee and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, this New York Times bestseller is “an extraordinary achievement” (The New Yorker)—a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out “war against cancer.” The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist. Riveting, urgent, and surprising, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.

Book Off Our Chests A Candid Tour Through the World of Cancer

Download or read book Off Our Chests A Candid Tour Through the World of Cancer written by John Marshall and published by Ideapress Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A surprisingly open memoir co-authored by the married duo of a world class oncologist and a cancer survivor about love, pain, hope, strength and resilience while navigating the overwhelming breast cancer advocacy movement. Off Our Chests recounts the story of Liza and John's experience with her diagnosis and treatment. Written in alternating voices, Liza details her treatment, the complex decisions she had to make throughout her course of chemotherapy and radiation, including clinical trial participation and an elective double mastectomy, the added complexity of being treated at the cancer center of which John was the chief of hematology and oncology, and the emotional impact of knowing she may die as a young woman with young children. John, who lost his own mother to cancer at the age of 13, provides an inside look into the world of cancer care and research, but also the perspective of someone who understands the medicine but who was unprepared for assuming the role of caregiver and worried husband. John adds insights into his world of running the clinical operations of the cancer center where Liza would receive her care, commentary on the breast cancer machine, the need for clinical research, the high cost of cancer care, and an easy to understand explanation of the clinical and scientific background of oncology. While they both felt that they were already expert commentators on their own "Cancer Channel" during the course of Liza's illness, they both came to realize how little understanding they truly had of what a cancer diagnosis does to the patient, caregivers, children, family members, and friends. Liza and John share their most intimate thoughts, including many that were previously unsaid--even between the two of them. Both gain an understanding of the other's life, a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a cancer patient, and of the emotional strains of being an oncologist where so many of the patients die on their watch.
