Book The Theology of the Early Greek Philosophers

Download or read book The Theology of the Early Greek Philosophers written by Werner Jaeger and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new and revolutionizing ideas which the early Greek thinkers developed about the nature of the universe had a direct impact upon their conception of what they called, in a new sense, 'God' or 'the Divine.' The history of the philosophical theology of the Greeks is thus the history of their rational approach to the nature of reality itself in its successive phases. The late Professor Jaeger's classic book traces this development from the first intimations in Hesiod of the theology that was to come, through the heroic age of Greek cosmological thought, down to the time of the Sophists of the fifth century B.C.

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE Here are the great minds of Western civilization and their pivotal ideas, from Plato to Hegel, from Augustine to Nietzsche, from Copernicus to Freud. Richard Tarnas performs the near-miracle of describing profound philosophical concepts simply but without simplifying them. Ten years in the making and already hailed as a classic, THE PASSION OF THE WESERN MIND is truly a complete liberal education in a single volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plato's frontal attack on poetry has always been a problem for sympathetic students, who have often minimized or avoided it. Beginning with the premise that the attack must be taken seriously, Eric Havelock shows that Plato's hostility is explained by the continued domination of the poetic tradition in contemporary Greek thought. The reason for the dominance of this tradition was technological. In a nonliterate culture, stored experience necessary to cultural stability had to be preserved as poetry in order to be memorized. Plato attacks poets, particularly Homer, as the sole source of Greek moral and technical instruction-Mr. Havelock shows how the Iliad acted as an oral encyclopedia. Under the label of mimesis, Plato condemns the poetic process of emotional identification and the necessity of presenting content as a series of specific images in a continued narrative. The second part of the book discusses the Platonic Forms as an aspect of an increasingly rational culture. Literate Greece demanded, instead of poetic discourse, a vocabulary and a sentence structure both abstract and explicit in which experience could be described normatively and analytically: in short a language of ethics and science.

Book Plato s Introduction of Forms

Download or read book Plato s Introduction of Forms written by R. M. Dancy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-16 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of Plato are divided between those who emphasize the literature of the dialogues and those who emphasize the argument of the dialogues, and between those who see a development in the thought of the dialogues and those who do not. In this important book Russell Dancy focuses on the arguments and defends a developmental picture. He explains the Theory of Forms of the Phaedo and Symposium as an outgrowth of the quest for definitions canvassed in the Socratic dialogues, by constructing a Theory of Definition for the Socratic dialogues based on the refutations of definitions in those dialogues, and showing how that theory is mirrored in the Theory of Forms. His discussion, notable for both its clarity and its meticulous scholarship, ranges in detail over a number of Plato's early and middle dialogues, and will be of interest to readers in Plato studies and in ancient philosophy more generally.

Book excerpt: "I would give all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates." - Steve JobsExtensive revision of my first book Heraclitus - Nimis Obscurē.How Apple's brilliant founder's wish nearly came true, and how another of his well-known offerings, encouraging people to Think Different, led the author to, in time and tragically too late, trip over Heraclitus of Ephesus, the so-called 'Nimis Obscurē' or 'too obscure' Ancient Greek philosopher and, in recognizing himself in that seminal mind's words subsequently earned an understanding of what it means to Think Excellently, as Heraclitus intended. However late in coming to the table, this book offers the reader not only a definitive take on Heraclitus' meanings, but also an unexpected glimpse into the mind, methods and influences on none other than Socrates himself.Of particular interest is his intention in coining the term Lógos, or Reason, as having some deeper meaning, both to himself and to those philosophers, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, who followed him and, in laying the foundation of Western thinking, comprise perhaps the most exclusive fraternity in history, are his thoughts on wisdom, understanding, teaching and learning, and the nature of and limits inherent in knowledge. The author offers his own insights and perspective on the nature of prejudice, the danger in being too highly educated and the role of philosophy in modern life. Also exploring new teaching methods making use of both the cranky Ancient Greek's lessons and his own experiences with alternative ways of learning in an attempt to pass on Heraclitus' intended teachings and so provide readers with the complete tool set needed to Think Excellently. These hard-earned insights, made possible only through the Internet and Jobs' Macintosh computers, bring this narrative full circle to finish with a few reflections on these Insanely Great inventions and the man behind them. This third and final attempt to encapsulate all of my insights where those two Ancient Greeks of note are concerned. I also present my own thoughts on those and other related notions such as the nature of prejudice, the phenomenon I refer to as cognitive locking, and the dangers inherent in being either too well-educated or overly secure in ones' sense of self-knowledge.
