Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Lands and Letters The purpose of this book is to interpret Greek lands by literature, and Greek literature by local associations and the physical environment. Those who possess an intimate acquaintance with Greek or who have the good fortune to stay long in Greece will be able to draw upon their own resources. Many travellers, however, must curtail their visit to a few weeks or months, and it is hoped that to them this book may prove useful as a companion in travel, while to a wider range of readers it may prove suggestive in appraising what is most vital in our "Hellenic heritage." To keep within reasonable bounds it has seemed necessary to limit our survey to those portions of the mainland of Greece and those islands, immediately adjacent in the Gulf of Ægina, which may be easily visited during a short stay in Athens as headquarters. But the visitor cannot be too strongly urged to avail himself of opportunities to visit the remoter islands and the shores of Asia Minor, which are so beautiful a part of the Greek world and have played so brilliant a rô1e in Greek history and literature. In quoting or summarizing the literature the limitations of space are obvious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Lands and Letters Purely learned treatises in Greek have not been cited except by way of illustration. The historical geographer Strabo, of the time of Augustus, has offered suggestive material; and Pausanias, of the second century of our era, the pious and often charming writer of the Guide book to Greece, has, as was inevitable, been the Cicerone in many places. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Greece: Being a Sequel to Letters on Egypt, and Containing Travels Through Rhodes, Crete, and Other Islands of the Archipelago I am perfectly of your opinion: the country of Homer, of Socrates, and so many other great men whom their virtues or talents have immortalized, has a claim to the love and veneration of all ages. The traveller of sensibility, led by the enthusiasm inspired by those places, once the theatre of so many memorable events, will long continue to visit them. But, alas! instead of a free, learned, and warlike people, he will find pusillanimous and ignorant slaves; instead of flourishing cities, he will meet with nothing but heaps of ruins, and scattered and mutilated marbles, instead of the famous monuments of ancient genius. Yet if his researches be conducted by found sense, if he be exempt from prejudices, and correct in his descriptions, even this contrast will supply interesting objects and useful truths. You already have a glimpse, Madam, of one part of the scenes about to open to your view. The obscurity, indeed, in which they are enveloped, does not permit you to discern their effects. Book Ancient Greek Lists

Download or read book Ancient Greek Lists written by Athena Kirk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Greek Lists brings together catalogic texts from a variety of genres, arguing that the list form was the ancient mode of expressing value through text. Ranging from Homer's Catalogue of Ships through Attic comedy and Hellenistic poetry to temple inventories, the book draws connections among texts seldom juxtaposed, examining the ways in which lists can stand in for objects, create value, act as methods of control, and even approximate the infinite. Athena Kirk analyzes how lists come to stand as a genre in their own right, shedding light on both under-studied and well-known sources to engage scholars and students of Classical literature, ancient history, and ancient languages.
