Download or read book The Religion of Ancient Greece Classic Reprint written by Jane Ellen Harrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Ancient Greece Influence of Modern Scientific Methods - The study Of religion as a whole is a tardy modern growth. SO long as religions were divided into one true and the rest false, progress was natu rally impossible. The slow pressure Of science introduced first the comparative, then the his torical method. The facts Of ancient and savage religions being once collected and laid side by side, it became immediately evident that there were resemblances as well as differences, and some sort Of classification was possible. Then came the historical impulse, the desire to see if in religion also there existed a law Of development, and if the facts Of religion succeeded each other in any ascertainable order. Book Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion

Download or read book Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion written by John Cuthbert Lawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion: A Study in Survivals The scheme of work originally proposed was the investigation of the customs and superstitions of modern Greece in their possible bearing upon the life and thought of ancient Greece; and to the Managers of the Craven Fund at that time, with whom was associated Mr R. A. Neil of Pembroke College to whose memory I have dedicated this book, I render hearty thanks for their willingness to encourage a venture new in direction, vague in scope, and possibly void of result. The course of research proposed was one which required as the first condition of any success considerable readiness in speaking and understanding the popular language, and to the attainment of this my first few months were necessarily devoted. When once the ear has become accustomed to the modern pronunciation, a knowledge of ancient Greek makes for rapid progress; and some three or four months spent chiefly in the cafe's of small provincial towns rendered me fairly proficient in ordinary conversation. Subsequent practice enabled me also to follow conversations not intended for my ear; and on more than one occasion I obtained from the talk of peasants thus overheard information which they might have been chary of imparting to a stranger. Book Epilegomena to the Study of Greek Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Epilegomena to the Study of Greek Religion Classic Reprint written by Jane Ellen Harrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epilegomena to the Study of Greek Religion But, and this is important, the two notions are never very sharply sundered they are but two faces Of the same thought, or rather will, the will to live. Beating, at the first glance, looks like mere expulsion of evil - you beat the mischief out of a child]. But certain ritual prescriptions show another face. In Lithuania2 the Easter Beating must be inflicted with a twig or branch of birch on which the green leaves have just sprouted. Endless care is taken to secure this. If the birch branches do not bud in time the birch rods are kept in warm water for days-if even then they do not bud they are artificially heated in a stove pipe. In Orlagau in Thuringia the custom is called whipping with fresh green, and the spoken words tell the same tale: Good morning! Fresh Green! Long life! You must give us a bright thaler. All is to be fresh, new, bright, living. It is the induction by contagion Of new vitality and fertility. In Plutarch's ceremony, be it noted, the slave is beaten with rods of agnus cactus, a plant much in use in ancient medicine as a fertility charm. Book Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion Classic Reprint written by Jane Ellen Harrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion is not, despite the title, an introduction to Greek Religion. Beginners to the subject should look elsewhere, first, and return to this book later. Instead this is a study of the foundations (or alternatively depths) of Greek religion. It is not an easy read, nor intended to be, but it is an undeniable classic and amazing work of scholarship. Most of us are aware of the classical stories of Greek religion, Zeus, the minotaur, wax wings etc. Instead in this book Jane Ellen Harrison focuses on the rituals, mysteries and other features of the older religion that gave birth to these myths. Rather than godly beings consuming ambrosia on top of a mountain these are beliefs of ghosts, demons and potentially vengeful spirits which must be placated, or disaster will occur. As Harrison writes "Great things in literature, Greek plays for example, I most enjoy when behind their bright splendours I see moving darker and older shapes." This work provides insights, showing us the darker, older shapes moving behind classical Greek religion. Once you understand it you will not see the old stories in the same light ever again. Certain objects of Greek cult remained outside the region of that which we call personal theism; and we have records or hints of direct worship being offered to the thunder or the thunder-stone, the winds, the rivers and streams, and with greater earnestness and profit to the holy hearth of the house. And while the same anthropo morphic bias which succeeded in evolving or detach ing the river-god or nymph from the element gave the stimulus to a religious art the most beautiful the world has seen, yet certain aniconic sacred things that we may call fetishes - the hewn stock or pillar, the meteorite, the axe - continued to appeal to the religious awe both of individuals and states from the earliest to the latest periods of this polytheism. Book Greek Religious Thought from Homer to the Age of Alexander Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Religious Thought from Homer to the Age of Alexander Classic Reprint written by F. M. Cornford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Religious Thought From Homer to the Age of Alexander The purpose of this book is to let the English reader see for himself what the Greeks, from Homer to Aristotle, thought about the world, the gods and their relations to man, the nature and destiny of the soul, and the significance of human life. The form of presentation is prescribed by the plan of the series. The book is to be a compilation of extracts from the Greek authors, selected, so far as possible, without prejudice and translated with such honesty as a translation may have. This plan has the merit of isolating the actual thought of the Greeks in this period from all the constructions put upon it by later ages, except in so far as the choice of extracts must be governed by some scheme in, the Compiler's mind, which is itself determined by the limits of his knowledge and by other personal factors. In the book itself it is clearly his business to reduce the influence of these factors to the lowest point; but in the introduction it is no less his business to forewarn the reader against some of the consequences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who marched in religious processions and why? How were blood sacrifice and communal feasting related to identities in the ancient Greek city? With questions such as these, current scholarship aims to demonstrate the ways in which religion maps on to the socio-political structures of the Greek polis ('polis religion'). In this book Dr Kindt explores a more comprehensive conception of ancient Greek religion beyond this traditional paradigm. Comparative in method and outlook, the book invites its readers to embark on an interdisciplinary journey touching upon such diverse topics as religious belief, personal religion, magic and theology. Specific examples include the transformation of tyrant property into ritual objects, the cultural practice of setting up dedications at Olympia, and a man attempting to make love to Praxiteles' famous statue of Aphrodite. The book will be valuable for all students and scholars seeking to understand the complex phenomenon of ancient Greek religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dionysos and Immortality: The Greek Faith in Immortality as Affected by the Rise of Individualism At no time did there exist an organized authority which could formulate standards of faith or dictate the usages of religious etiquette. Ritual, seeking that which in matter and manner was believed to be well pleasing to the gods, followed the traditions of the individual shrines, and there were no better theologians than the poets. Dogmas there were none. In contrast with the religious experience of a land like India, Greece stands at the extreme. There re ligion was imposed as a system from With out, here it sprang as a social and civic impulse from within.
