Book Education in a Multicultural Cyprus

Download or read book Education in a Multicultural Cyprus written by Nicos Anastasiou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Latins, and Armenians have been the primary historical communities that make up the multicultural landscape of Cyprus. However, the continuing conflict between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots has geographically, socially and psychologically segregated these communities, while the influx of economic migrants, especially after Cyprus’s accession to the EU in 2004, has, in turn, contributed to Cyprus’s challenges, arising from multiculturalism, in an altogether different perspective. How has education, over time, addressed and re-examined all these issues introduced by Cyprus’ complex evolving multiculturalism and ethnic diversity? How can education better attend to current problems of coexistence in Cyprus, and what kind of role can it play in a federal re-united country? This collection of essays introduces an innovative and critical examination of these questions in order to provide relevant answers. More specifically, it examines how formal, non-formal and informal education contributed to the creation and perpetuation of the Cyprus conflict, as well as to prejudices, inter-ethnic stereotypes, and misperceptions. The book also discusses how education could contribute to conflict transformation, empathy and peaceful coexistence amongst the different Cypriot communities, and how this has been possible in other multi-ethnic societies. The volume will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers interested in peace education, multiculturalism and conflict transformation.

Book excerpt: This unique handbook offers an analytical review of the education systems of all European countries, following common analytical guidelines, and highlighting the paradox that education simultaneously pursues a universal value as well as a national character. The book provides a differentiated analytical data base, and offers suggestions for further research.

Book Heritage Language Education in Greece and Cyprus

Download or read book Heritage Language Education in Greece and Cyprus written by Nikos Gogonas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the growing trend of preserving ethnic languages within diverse ethnolinguistic communities in Greece and Cyprus, our understanding of heritage language education in these countries remains limited. The chapters in this collection undertake a thoughtful exploration of language education in the world’s two majority-Greek-speaking contexts. The volume brings together empirical studies that exhibit the array of heritage language education options available in Greece and Cyprus today, including community/complementary schools operating on weekends or after regular school hours, providing language and culture classes in a range of languages (e.g., Albanian, Czech, Armenian, Russian), day schools (such as Italian and Hebrew schools), and 'family language schools' developed within the UNICEF framework. Collectively, these chapters establish a novel evidence base describing the diversity of the heritage language education landscape, which could act as a catalyst for further research and potentially drive change in both policy and practice. Importantly, the volume renders heritage language education initiatives in Greece and Cyprus visible – mainly to scholars, but potentially also to practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders in this evolving social, educational, and linguistic domain.

Download or read book Imperial Control in Cyprus written by Antigone Heraclidou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Protectorate Cyprus, education was one of the most effective tools of imperial control and political manipulation used by the British. This book charts the cultural and educational aspects of British colonial rule in Cyprus and analyses what these policies reveal about the internal struggles on the island between the 1930s and the 1960s. Cyprus had been under British occupation since 1878, but it was only half a century later that educational policies acquired a strong political significance and became essential in preserving the British position on the island. The co-existence of two very strongly held and eventually conflicting national identities in Cyprus – Greek Orthodox and Turkish Muslim – inevitably led to the politicisation of education and culture on the island. Therefore, any attempts to impose British culture, language and ways of thinking onto Cypriots, or even to create a distinct Cypriot identity, had very limited success. Gradually, the education system reflected the shifting political developments in colonial Cyprus. By the start of the 1950s, schools had become a breeding ground for discontent and between 1955 and 1959 they were an indispensable part of the EOKA revolt. In this book, Antigone Heraclidou provides a new dimension to the understanding and origins of the deadlock that was to prove one of the most intractable in the final years of the British Empire.

Book Greek as an Additional Language GAL School Students in Cyprus in Late Modernity

Download or read book Greek as an Additional Language GAL School Students in Cyprus in Late Modernity written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an ethnographic study investigating the misplacement of students in parallel intensive Greek language classes in Greek-Cypriot primary schools. In 2008, the Cyprus Ministry of Education issued a policy document about the setting up of classes for migrant students to be given intensive instruction in the Greek language in Greek-Cypriot state primary schools, and since then, parallel classes have been offered in schools. However, the establishment of the parallel classes was prompted by the need to respond to EU discourses about human rights for minorities and not by a change .in the Hellenocentric ideology that dominates the Greek-Cypriot educational system. The fact that the policy for parallel classes was developed as something extra to regular school life and on the margins of the mainstream reveals that the Hellenocentric character of the curriculum was left untouched. This project focuses on three parallel classes in two primary schools and draws on data collected during fieldwork that lasted five months. The focal children had a migrant background but either total or considerable experience of living within GreekCypriot society and competence in everyday spoken Greek-Cypriot dialect; yet, they had been selected for parallel intensive Greek language tuition away from their mainstream class. Taking into account the dominant Hellenocentric ideology in the Greek-Cypriot educational system and with anti-essentialist cultural studies as the theoretical stance, the thesis explores how this phenomenon came about. The empirical investigation shows that children were misplaced because Hellenocentric ideology cannot envisage people who do not have Greek-Cypriot parents and a Greek-only orientation to language as anything else but 'the other'. The thesis concludes that new approaches are necessary in the era of the new globalisation in which new patterns of language and superdiversity are constantly emerging.
